O's express interest in Mark Hendrickson

From RotoWire (sort of):

It’s apparently a mutual interest, while Hendrickson could provide a veteran presence in what figures to be a very young rotation. He fell apart as a starter in Florida last season, so we doubt that a move to the American League East is going to make him a better fantasy option.

Hendrickson is really not any good at all. There's my analysis.

I'd give him a shot

He’s only 34, the guy definitely has time on his side.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

BFD

see Steve Traschel, or the rest of the has-been they’ve thried to push on us to placate the fans for another worthless off season on the way to another 5th place finish. The loss of Texiera to the Yankees has doomed this franchise to failure. May I suggest Indianapolis for your next home, Mr. Angelos?

I agree

Maybe he can not be terrible. Certainly he’ll take the pressure off the young guys that will undoubtably comprise at least 3/5 of the rotation.
Also, what other options are there? I was really hoping the Os would take this chance to break into the Japanese market with a starter…I’m still hoping, MacPhail.

If they do...

…it’s only because no other team wants them.

Yes

But I agree with Orpheus in that we have no other options. Although I’d love to stockpile 22-25 year old pitchers, it’s just not a viable option at this point. A guy like Hendrickson ensures that our prospects aren’t rushed up, and he comes at a pretty cheap price.

The shit of it...

…is that what I’ve read of this little offseason romance has Mark fucking Hendrickson playing coy with the O’s. This is what it’s come to folks.

Baseball teams are evolving into two separate species like in H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine”, and we’re decidedly the nasty little variety that lives underground.

I remember shelling Mark Hendrickson

Not me personally, but the Orioles. And any other team he used to face. And while he would be getting shelled, the announcers would always tell us what a great basketball player he was. Maybe you should have picked a different sport, Mark. Or not, since you’re getting paid millions of dollars to suck at baseball.

by PhilR8 on Dec 25, 2008 10:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Unless the O's just want to win the winter

basketball league with him and Kam I would pass. He has been in LA and Florida and has gotten worse and that is truly hard to do. The only reason to sign him is to keep one or more of the young kids from getting shelled but it aint going to be pretty.

I would rather try almost anyone else and quite frankly Hendrickson would be a dumbass to pitch in this division. See the theme in that statement?

by sanders833 on Dec 25, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually,

I have personally shelled Mark Hendrickson. That’s how bad he is.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."

by 2632 on Dec 25, 2008 11:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

some of the local tee ball leagues were thinking they could use him instead of the tee to speed the kids development and confidence.

I am sure somebody thinks he could be the next Jamie Moyer….

I thought I had the PERFECT Xmas present for you: Roberto Bolano's novel "2666". But it's probably a little beyond you...

Thank you, thank you very much, I’ll be here all week, matinee show on Sunday.

Actually, the late Senor Bolano does sound like a good fit for you. His previous release, “The Savage Detectives”, was described as a “sexy, meandering masterpiece” — I don’t know how much meandering you do, but the rest works. And “2666” has been located by one critic “on the edge between happy-go-lucky hilarity and creeping dread” — which is a pretty good description of a serious Orioles fan with a blogging problem, which is you all over. So maybe for your birthday…

pitching ideas

Pavano-Florida?
Colon-White Sox?, Detroit?
Ponson-Aruba?
Penny-Boston, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Florida
Pedro-Mets, Phillies, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Houston, LA, SF,
3 Japanese hurlers-all getting expensive
Benson-maybe
Garland-Angels, Mets, Atlanta
Wolf-Mets, Braves, LA
Odalis Perez-maybe
Josh Fogg-I hope not
Others-Redding, Livan Hernandez-you want innings here are innings, etc, etc etc.

I suspect the Orioles do not want to spend any more money until 2010. Mora, Hernandez/Freel, Huff, Walker, Baez and probably Brian will be off the books. I suspect the O’s hope they get a major league ready arm in the deal for Brian and if they save payroll trading Brian maybe they will pursue a cheap alternative in free agency.

Otherwise, hold your breath on pitching moves. Guthrie, any new acquistions and whoever wins the job in spring training are the rotation. I suspect Olsen, Patton, Liz will have to win jobs right along with Waters, Burres, Bass, etc.

The buzz on this offseason is most likely going to get worse as we may have to go into another Brian Roberts watch very soon. Missing Tex and losing Brian isnt going to help ticket renewals (and as much as I like Brian very few people will buy new tickets if Brian signs an extension, but some wont if he leaves) which is why I suspect the Orioles wont be rushing to add any payroll for 2009.

Sorry to be the Grinch. Everyone have a great Christmas! Believe me, as a long suffering Oriole fans we will get through this. I truly believe we have great inflow of talent coming.
I hope 2009 marks a great year of prospect growth-from Adam Jones, Matt Wieters but more importantly from Rad Liz, Garrett Olsen, Troy Patten (I believe), Kam, Chris Ray and from the big three and David Hernandez, Brandon Erbe and the other promising arms. Brandon and Billy-step it up in 2009.

I thought we just got rid of our really tall piece of mound furniture. If the key is to throw around names like Hendrickson and Redding so that we’ll greet Braden Looper as a liberator when he arrives, mission accomplished, Andy.

For reals...

…if we just jettisoned Cabrera so we could make room for a (considerably pricier) Mark Hendrickson I am going to start wondering what’s up with MacPhail. That’s like poop trading, but throwing in your watch and wallet and just getting poo back in return.

I would rather lose with the familiar names

than waste time with some half-ass NL castaway like . Obviously this guy’s numbers are not going to get better in the AL Beast, so I will take a raincheck thanks.

Damn this offseason has been utterly useless and disappointing. Yet another year of going to minor league games cause I can’t deal with the depressing atmosphere of the artist formerly known as OPACY.

If we were going to waste our time with shit like this, why did we ever get rid of people like D-Cab and Millah. At least they provided something interesting to the clubhouse and for message boards full of reasonable folks like ourselves. Nothing gets the CC faithful buzzing like a good outburst from Dan!!

I really don't want him back either.

His numbers were staggeringly bad. I love his clubhouse presence, but that only gets you so far. He should spend more time working on staying in the league and less time recording mildly funny videos that attempt to make the Orioles seem less futile than what they are.

We got a shortstop.

And we got rid of Ramon. Neither of these things is earth-shattering, but both of these things have improved the team.

Garland in the AL East is going to be a Daniel Cabrera clone. No use in paying like $10 million per for that.

Better him than Derek Lowe

If we’re willing to shell out $20 per for Teixeira, then we’ve got the cash. Sheets and Garland are probably the best out there. Cost of doing business. Unless Guts can pitch every day.
