Orioles: Sexson an option at 1B?
ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?
Seriously, I'm trying to be patient. I'm trying to have faith. But if the Baltimore Orioles sign Richie effing Sexton I am going to vomit on Andy MacPhail first chance I get.

Seconded.
I’m starting to think that Andy Mac is just fucking with us or something. Maybe he’s got some bizarre Moneyball-esque strategy and he’s discovered that really tall skinny guys are undervalued in today’s market. I can’t wait til he signs Gheorghe Muresan as our new catcher.

Score one for the kids!

Agreed.
I can’t take this much longer. I will never forget when Richie popped his shoulder out hitting a 500ft homer in AZ, quite the career highlight there pal. Please Andy McPete, please don’t do it!

Is there some chance that he'll pay us to let him play?
I might consider it if that’s the case…

Despite my best efforts
I just can’t seem to care any longer; it’s like we’re merely going through the motions.
I was fine with Izturis as he is relatively young, and can hold down the position until some young guys come up. By the same token, I’d accept “Sexton” if he was a stopgap who would allow a guy between Bowie/Norfolk the time to develop.
The thing that really irks me is that we just don’t have anyone even remotely close to coming up at either position, and if Huff/Roberts, and eventually Scott/Sherrill, aren’t moved, then we’ll have Izturis/Sexson/Hinske as permanent installations in Baltimore.
We have the luxury of being able to traditionally rebuild like small market teams, yet still spend big here and there like a true middle market franchise. In my opinion, Andy should just get the Roberts/Huff deals over with sooner rather than later as their value decreases as the days tick by.
It just seems odd to me that MacPhail really couldn’t find a package for Sherrill/Huff/Roberts at the deadline that would be worth more than future draft picks. It makes you wonder, has Petey really relinquished most of his tyrannical power?

But there are definitely rumors, and Hinske would probably come cheap.

Hinske
I was in the front row of the bleachers at OPACY on Opening Day. There was a guy who was about two rows behind me and a section over who was heckling Hinske relentlessly throughout the early portions of the game. Hinske was playing in RF. Later in the game, he hit a bomb that landed about 10 feet from the heckler.
So I guess what I’m saying is, if we’re going to end up with Hinske somehow, hopefully we can find that heckler and keep him motivated.

But the Orioles seem to be running out of fans, so I’m not sure that strategy would work.

At least Izturis plays good defense. If we’re going to sign a crappy, cheap vet, at least someone like doug mientkiewicz can pick it.

mother of God
A stopgap might make any sense if we had a single fucking player in this entire system within four years of playing first base for the Baltimore Orioles. But yeah, a broken down guy in his mid 30s, a power hitter who doesn’t hit for power anymore and can’t get on base and can’t play defense…fuck, Millar’s better than Sexson. Cheese and rice.

I'm fine with stopgaps
As long as MacPhail is actually working to bring in long term solutions via trades; an ideal scenario would entail Andy flipping Roberts for a SS 4 months away from being ML ready.
This is very preliminary as the offseason has yet to finish, but at this juncture in time, it seems like Andy is content with getting his draft picks for Roberts/Huff, meaning that we first get to see the “answers” in the 2010 AFL, with their MiL debut’s in 2011. I’m all for rebuilding, but by 2013, even Nicky will be nearing 30.

he's ... really not good
To be completely blunt, there’s really nothing in his numbers that suggests he can play 1B in the majors for a decent team.

any player you’d have to platoon at first to have decent output is not worth being on a major league club. or a minor league club. its first base! isnt there ANYONE else available? sign me up for another year of millar if thats the case. at least he’s likeable.

solid pickup, if they can make it happen. I would’ve been satisfied with just the Hendrickson signing, but now they’re thinking about Sexson too? Damn! I like where MacPhail’s head is at, glad someone is finally turning this franchise in the right direction

Everyone chill out
2009 is going to be a lot like 2008 although apparently uglier. Who cares….right?
Its player development that is the key. I know these stopgaps are driving me mad but we just have to get over it. Unless there is a core free agent to add, the Orioles arent going to add payroll of significance as they are concerned about 2009 attendance and sponsorship and still have some hefty payroll commitments in 2009.
So deep breath, mutter a silent four letter word, and lets hope we get some decent return for Brian. If Brian signs an extension well then bless his heart.

Not pannicking yet
The only real information in the article is that the O’s talked to Sexon’s agent. And if they do sign him, I’m fine with that.
Schmuck seemed to add the implication that the Orioles would consider him for their answer at 1B. If the Orioles sign him thinking he’s an every day first baseman for 2009, then that’s depressing. If they are signing him and sending him to the minors to see if he has anything left or even a bat off the bench, then it’s not the end of the world.

I’d add that we don’t even know the source. This could be leaked from Sexson’s agent in an attempt to drum up publicity for Sexson. I’m saving my anger for later, when it will no doubt be justified.

We already have Aubrey Huff, MacPhail.
If you’re really looking for a 1B not named Kevin Millar.
Huff is younger & is already an Orioles. Bonus: Huff can actually hit.
I’d rather have Oscar Salazar than Sexson.

1. This is Peter Schmuck we’re talking about. Since when did HE have the inside line?
2. This is the relevant sentence:

I have nothing to write, but they pay me to do a column, so I’ll scrape together some bullshit I heard on the bus, throw in some stats, and then give “my take” on it, so I get a paycheck.
