The Orioles officially added a veteran pitcher to their 40-man roster today, announcing that lefty Mark Hendrickson passed his physical and has agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million.
It could increase to $2 million in 2009 if he reaches certain incentives for games pitched and started.
Hendrickson, 34, has a 50-63 record and a 5.07 ERA over parts of seven seasons. He went 7-8 in 2008 with a 5.45 ERA in 36 games (19 starts) for the Florida Marlins.
The Orioles, who are looking to add at least two starters, value Hendrickson's versatility and like him best as a long reliever and spot starter. However, he could get an opportunity to win a spot in the rotation behind Jeremy Guthrie.

Sounds not-so-bad
when you put it that way.
BUt we really have to start signing those mentioned “two starters” because we definitely DON’T want him to win a spot behind Guthrie.

eh whatever
I guess it came down to paying Danny Cabs $4-4.5 million or Hendrickson $1.5-2 million. Looks like MacPhail isn’t allured by the mythical potential of Cabrera and instead went a cheaper route for crappy performance. Can’t blame him
I found myself
thinking of this post and laughing like crazy at work today. I don’t know why, but the wording just struck my funny bone. Thank you for brightening my day OE.
WHAT ain't no country I ever heard of. Do they speak english in WHAT?
i don't HATE this contract.
add Kenshin, Looper, and give a young arm a shot and we’re not TERRIBLE. my God, the high hopes we have for this team nowadays.
still terrible

$1.5 Million?
Well at least we’re not getting ripped off. This guy is most likely a complete waste of time however.
someone is getting ripped off...
….it’s not Angelos, but I’m not sure fans of the club can say the same :)

thx, Dandy Andy
I will surely enjoy Hendrickson’s 14 starts until the team sends him to the bullpen. Yay!

I usually support Andy all the way..
but I don’t care what they paid for this guy he stinks! Why not take the league minimum pay, divide it up by how many starts they would give this so-called “pitcher”, take a different fan out of the seats before each game and let him throw to a few batters and pay him and get the bullpen out there early? The O’s would save even more money and we wouldn’t have to see the same bum pitch again.
Andy, I’ve been behind you every move, but this time WHAT WERE YOU THINKIN MAN? The bright side of this is that after this season no one will sign this guy and he will be gone FOREVER! YAY!

So do you think
Hendrickson will go into the Hall as an Oriole if he has a good year?

This guy? A good year?
A good year for this guy would be going 10-20 4.99….. thats if he eats his wheaties! ;)

Anyone have his stats in Camden Yards?
I vaguely remembering him shutting out the O or winning Madden’s first game or something….

3.25 ERA in 44.1 innings. 8 games. 7 starts. 1 shutout. 5 homers. 51 baserunners. 24 strikeouts.

Yes.
Career ERA vs. BAL = 3.64
Career ERA vs. TOR = 4.85
Career ERA vs. NYY = 5.49
Career ERA vs. BOS = 8.56
Notice a trend? That career ERA at OPCY is going northward.
Caveat: assuming he ends up as a starter. I actually like Hendrickson as a reliever. I just don’t see the Orioles doing enough to ensure he ends up in that role.

I definitely like the
idea of adding Lowe and his sinker in our ballpark. Let ’s not get our hopes up though, I am sure the Skanks or someone will eventually get him.

He's got PHN written all over him

Anyway, before I accidentally hit enter 7 times
I was going to say that I arrived a little late to the party and was wondering if you could define ‘PHN’ for me. I understand that this is some type of slam on the Red Sox, but I never could fully figure it out. This is slightly embarassing, but I couldn’t resist asking any longer…

Ah, excellent.
I figured the ‘N’ stood for nation, but those first two letters eluded me. It makes sense now…I really do get irritated by those front-running, pink hat-wearing floozies that don’t know shit about the game.

Supposedly BoSox don’t really seem that interested. Mets just offered him 3 years at $36M. That almost seems like a joke.

we will never even come close
to matching the 3/36 the Mets have offered him…which, I add, he apparently scoffed at. No chance we sign him.

And he should scoff at it. The guy has reached 180 innings the last 7 years in a row, and all but twice reached 200 innings (one time falling 2 outs short). His last 4 years ERA+’s are 131, 118, 124, and 114. Yeah, the guy is 35, but he’s still performing. He’s got to be able to get more than $12M/year. Not saying that I feel bad for a guy being offered $12M/year; but he would seem to be worth more than that.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have
I’m just saying, when the numbers start there, the Os aren’t getting in on the bidding.

Not bad, if used right
I think Hendrickson isn’t a bad signing if the O’s use him correctly. His best role is as a long reliever/spot starter. He’s got a 3.39 ERA as a reliever. Also I can’t find it, but I saw somewhere he did pretty well the 1st time through the lineup. I know he’s not the most exciting free agent, but I think he’ll be a solid signing as long as we don’t give him more than a handful of starts.
this is a team with one starting pitcher

I guess every start
that isn’t made by Guts will be considered a spot start. Damn this is gonna suck.
WHAT ain't no country I ever heard of. Do they speak english in WHAT?
I'm honestly wondering just how "polished" Matusz is.
And that just ain’t right.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
Explain
Not that I am doubting, but every report that I have heard says differently. I think his time in college did him well and I expect great things. He held his own in the AFL, which had softball-like lineups that routinely shelled quality pitching prospects. We’ll see though…
WHAT ain't no country I ever heard of. Do they speak english in WHAT?
He's expected to rise quickly & was listed as the "most polished"
pitcher available. GIven our current rotation (nonexistent) I’m wondering how quickly he could rise & how polished he is. And I shouldn’t be wondering those things about a guy we just drafted, he shouldn’t even be an option yet. But here I am, mulling it over…
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
David Price didn't stay long in MiLB
and he did fine for TB. Now, they brought him up to be a reliever at first, but still, college pitcher….

I would hope that Tillman or Hernandez are going to be the first callups.

I would be surprised if Tillman or Hernandez are the first call ups. I’m going to guess the rotation will look like Guts, Olson, Liz, Hendrickson and some other loser free agent (e.g., Looper). That means Albers, Patton, and Penn will get chances before Tillman or Hernandez once one (or more) of the above five start to suck. And this doesn’t factor in the possibility of Jim Johnson or Baez moving into the rotation. Tillman, Hernandez, Matusz, and Arrieta will all spend 2009 in the minors.
I was talking about the first of our prospects to get called up. Patton/Albers/Penn aren’t prospects anymore.
Unless he has a set back, I think Tillman is going to be on the ML roster before September.

I bet Matsuz comes up before Tillman
He’s actually older, I believe. The word is that he could be ready real soon.
I like birdman’s projections (well, I dunno if I like them, but I think they’re accurate).
one of the reasons to sign
Henrickson was so we dont talk ourselves into bringing up the big three early. Of course, that will change in mid May or so….unless something changes soon.
Sitll, lets say we trade Roberts for Floyd and then use Roberts salary to sign another free agent pitcher (I mean a transitional or bridge pitcher) like Oliver Perez or Randy Wolf or one of the Japanese pitchers. With the same payroll (more or less) you would then have 60% of a legit staff and you want to leave a couple of spots for Olsen, Patton, LIz or whoever to fall into while giving the big three ample time as well as someone like David Hernandez a late season audition.
In 2010 you could almost see a legit rotation here as with the payroll flexibility you could add one or two more free arms and/or see a legit influx from the minors plus a hopeful add of two more successful drafts.
Then in 2011, its clobbering time. Go add the offensive free agents or heaven forbid trade from organizational depth…oh my god….for offense….
Stop please.
I can’t handle all this talk of success. Why, it’s been so long I wouldn’t know how to handle it.
WHAT ain't no country I ever heard of. Do they speak english in WHAT?
Still why not trade Brian
and heck you could entertain the thought of reacquiring him if you want as a free agent…
Still think about it, if you trade Brian for a pitcher and sign a legit one with Brian’s seven million 2009 salary and roll it forward in a three year deal towards Oliver Perez (who will probably get 10 mil over three), Wolf, or one of the Japanese pitchers its not to hard to see a real rotation as early as next year. You have the 2009 and 2010 drafts which the O’s should have high picks and in 2010 money to spend on another arm or pen help and of course offense. The minor league pitching should be rolling in throughout 2009-2010 as well.
Bringing in a Gavin Floyd should kind of set the wheel in motion in terms of the rebuilding…and get these Sexson, Hendrickson signings to the back burner as organization depth for the 2009 team.
How about...
get this Sexson signing off the table? Depth should have value & Sexson’s value is a net loss in cash, roster space, and production.
