Greg Maddux to retire on Monday

I just saw it on the ESPNews crawl.

I had, like, five of those cards. Maddux retires with a career record of 355-227, ERA of 3.16 largely playing in a big hitters' era, and probably the best of his generation now that Clemens is so horribly tainted. He's a Hall of Famer.

1st ballot....

..and really, should be unanimous.

Except some prick sportswriter will spew some bullshit about how “nobody should be unanimous” because it “taints the game”.

Even I'll go with this one

First ballot HoF.

He is my absolute favorite pitcher

of the last 20 years…really, who else is there?

Glavine, Smoltz, and Mussina.

That’s pretty much it.

Pedro and Randy?

BoSox (and some Phillies) people will say Curt.

pedro and randy

are better than smoltz and glavine, if you ask me.

and if you ask me for more of my opinions, schilling is a borderline hall-of-famer who probably ends up making it.

Schilling only makes it

because of the Red Sox/major media attention

yep

and to be fair, his postseason numbers are unreal

David Cone's up this year

Interesting to see if he gets in the 1st year. 194-126, 3.46 regular season. 12-3, 3.80 post season.

I’ll take that over the Drama Queen of Phi-Ari-Bos.

Not 1st year he's eligiable?

Or not at all?

by sluggo 2.0 on Dec 8, 2008 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

not at all

dude has less than 200 career wins and no koufax-like legacy of absolute dominance at his peak.

That alone disqualifies him in the minds of most voters, I’d bet, and even looking at it in a little more sophisticated a manner, I just don’t see it. His top BR comps are guys like Kevin Brown and Orel Herscheiser. He does have Dazzy Vance on there, but Vance is kind a marginal HoFer anyway. His #1 comp is Doc Gooden.

by pipkin on Dec 8, 2008 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

OK, I see your point

Borderline? Possibly. Not in his 1st year? Absolutely. And I guess you could put him in the “if you have to think about it too long then the answer is no” category.

But if you say no to Cone then you have to say no to a bunch of guys who are already in.

You can't fix stupid. Stupid is forever.

I loved Bill James' David Cone write-up in the Abstract

Staff ace on loan

Honestly I wouldn’t put him in either. He falls just short for me. And I would say no to a bunch of guys already in, so that’s no problem for me. I don’t have a vote.

Used to love Maddux

Less love, but still a ton of respect. When I was younger I sent him a bunch of cards to autograph, don’t know if he himself actually autographed them, but yeah, its nice having cards signed by maddux :)

Not sure why he thought he could pull off that mustache. Other than that though, he was pretty awesome at everything. Still though, that’s one goddamn awful mustache.

Well

I am getting old. Every time one of these old guys retires I feel my childhood slipping further away. I was actually randomly looking at his stats the other day and it just reminded me that the dude is unreal.

Wonder what are the odds that Glavine and Smoltz also decide to retire.

Be great if they do

but I don’t see Smoltz giving in yet. Glavine maybe. Be great to see Maddux and Glavine go in together.

Greg Maddux had his major league debut when I was 4 months old

And he’s now retiring. I am the same age as the career of one of the five best pitchers of an era (loosely speaking, in no order, I’d say the best five are Maddux, Clemens, Johnson, Martinez, and, i dunno, Glavine I guess – I’m probably missing something).

I dunno exactly how this makes me feel, but it makes me feel something.

by pipkin on Dec 5, 2008 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

this will make Moose an after thought his first year

I think the only blemish you can really hang on Maddux was his playoff stats. Still, you dont get all the playoff stats unless your getting your team in the playoffs.

But I bet if you poll all the voters who leave him off the ballot that would be their number two reason followed by the same logic that leaves Willie Mays or Hank Aaron off a ballot as reason one.

Maddux

The guy is a class act. Always humble, never in the media, never in steroid talks. 1st ballot hall of famer and one of the best pitchers to ever live. I remember growing up wishing I could pitch like Greg Maddux. He never overpowered a hitter with his fast ball but instead played a game of chess from the mound to the plate. It’s hard seeing Childhood heroes retire. Obviously biased but I always thought he was better than Clemens anyway (Braves fan). I’m posting here because I saw he would be retiring on Monday and knew my good friend and former roomate SC had a tremendous amount of respect for Maddux and would put something up about it. Since they didn’t do it at Talking Chop.

McGwire

I had five of the McGwire rookies from the same set. Wish I had sold them off before the ‘roid news hit. Those things went down like stock in Enron. Had the ’85 Topps card, too. They were all worth a TON. Now they’re like German currency after WWII.

On the HOF tip, who thinks he’ll actually get in? I think the voters will keep giving him just enough votes to stay on the ballot until his last year. I’m on the fence whether they’ll finally give him the votes. I think his odds are better than Bonds’ will be.
