Furcal to the O's?

Furcal's decision also could have an impact on what happens to Casey Blake. The Dodgers appear to be focused on adding offense either at shortstop or third base. So if Furcal signs with the A's, the Dodgers might have to step up their pursuit of Blake. If they lose out on both, they'd be likely to turn to the trade market at third base -- meaning Ty Wigginton and Adrian Beltre would probably jump onto their shopping list. And even if they don't bring back Furcal, the Dodgers seem to have much less interest in Jack Wilson than has been reported elsewhere.

From Jayson Stark.

Makes sense if the O's are the mystery team.  Man, I like Furcal but I prefer that Andy lay off the free agents until we're closer to contention.

Casey Blake, huh?

Colletti really just doesn’t get it, does he?

Casey Blake is a 34 year old third/first baseman with a 105 career OPS+ and a 110 OPS+ last year (100 with the Dodgers…).

If they wanted offense at third they probably should have kept LaRoche. Oh well, that ship has sailed.

Hey Ned! #8 on Casey’s “Similar Players Through Age 34” list on BR is Melvin Mora. He’s two years older and has playoff experience! We’ll trade him to you for one of your good young players. You don’t seem to like them too much. How’s Kemp sound? Ethier? Hu? Hell, I’d give Loney a shot, even though he kinda stunk.

Furcal makes very little sense as he’ll demand 4 or 5 years and he’s a bit on the douchie side.

turned down

four years from the A’s at 38-40 million.

Giants are out. Dodgers arent going that long. Rest of the NL West is out. NL East is out.

Cubs would have to be a player though if they made a trade. Maybe be their Brian Roberts, lefty lead off hitter. St Louis is out. Milwaukee could trade Hardy but they have some minor league options. The Reds are stocked with SS prospects.

AL East-well the Orioles have a need and signing Rafael replaces Brian’s offense if traded or not resigned. Boston, a real real longshot. Toronto is out as is Tampa.

Detroit is out, Clev could use him and move Peralta but I doubt it. KC probably not. White Sox is a stretch as they have Beckham in two years and Ramirez but cant rule it out completely. Twins could use him but doesnt seem like their play, maybe if Blake passes.

A’s can get back in but I think they made their best offer. Seattle should be out and Texas has Young and Elvis (I hope this kid is as good as they think he is). If Texas still had Chris Young, Danks and Volquez (and you think we talk about letting Moyer get away)…..and the GM still has his job.

The last wild card could be the Angels. How about the Angels sign Manny (3 at 25), Furcal (3 at 12) and Dunn (3 @12) and re up Lackey who already has a contract extension worked out. At 1b the Angels should finally give Kendry Morales a shot.

As sanders pointed out, Fucal’s whittling his options down and, unfortunately, the O’s are still alive. I’d see a Furcal signing like bringing in Dunn, except worse as he is 31. If I were GM, I’d have let Fahey/Bynum/Heranandez/Castro/Cintron just rot out there until we got a legitimate guy coming up through the farm. It’s not like we need a shortstop with an OPS of 1.012.

I’d be all for Furcal if he were a stop gap, but the reality is that we don’t have anyone even remotely close to the bigs, and it doesn’t look like Andy can find one through a trade, either. Once again, why make this move?

Right now, we’re looking at Grant Green and Robbie Shields. I wish that the MLB would allow draft pick trades, because fifth overall is too high for Shields and will leave us in an awkward situation where we bring in another pitcher.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Hey if the Dodgers want a 3B

Mora would be a good fit

I still they they should just sign Izturis

He can’t hit, but he’ll probably be jsut mediocre enough to hold on to the job.

by pipkin on Dec 6, 2008 3:51 PM EST reply actions

Even mediocre would be nice at this point.

Librarians are hiding something

mediocre for cheap

is better than pretty good, old, and expensive

furcal’s a nice player, but I wouldn’t go more than three years on him.

by pipkin on Dec 6, 2008 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

Furcal's back

is what scares me. If not, I would take him. He has a great arm and pretty good range. Heck, he is the same age as Brian and I dont hear to many people not willing to sign Brian for an additional three years. He and Brian would be a heck of a 1-2 top of the lineup or keystone combo.

I am wondering if the Braves might have inquired, I took them out of the mix prematurely. If they trade Escobar then they would have an opening. Still I cant see anyone going to much more then the A’s offer so it may be Atlanta and LA/National league is more a preference for Furcal. I guess if Manny doesnt go to LA then Furcal should be easier for their budget. Yet, I get the feeling Manny might be the last significant free agent signed and yet if Tex isnt going to California, Manny makes perfect sense for the Angels to swoop in and grab.

Brian doesn't really have an injury history

and hasn’t gained a bunch of weight the last couple years

that’s why I’m more hesitant on Furcal than Brian.

by pipkin on Dec 6, 2008 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

agree completely

still Furcal looked solid in the playoffs and if you dont play all season its easy to gain weight. Furcal’s back was an issue. The year before it was his ankle. Still Furcal looked like his old self before the back injury.

Offensively, those two could do what Jeter and Damon could do and then throw in some defense up the middle. Jones, Weiters, Roberts and Furcal wouldnt be a bad up the middle combo for the next four or fives years. I could close my eyes and see that in its glory.

Its a risk and if you dont sign any pitching or have a plan to do so why bother? The bottomline is Andy MacPhail wanted to trade Brian last year and I suspect he wants to trade him again. He knows the organization lacks young positional talent and three starting pitchers as currently configured plus other then Chase Utley and Robinson Cano how many teams are going to have 36-40 million committed to a second baseman which is what it might take to keep Brian esp from the O’s.

dustin's a lot younger than brian

yeah, i know what you’re saying

i just have never been that excited by rafael furcal. all that messing around with weird sytles of bunting when he was with the braves would bother me. its like dude, if you’re gonna bunt just do it the way you know it’ll work.

and he seems like a dick.

but then i remember luis and the crew and think you’re probably right.

Posted it elsewhere, but still...

In Roch’s latest blog he mentions that the Giants might be fielding offers for Emmanuel Burriss now that they’ve signed Renteria.

The guy hit pretty well and would definitely be worth checking out, depending on the price.

Based on Roch’s comments, he might be better suited for second, but still. Put him at short for a season or two, and see if he works out. If not and the Os trade Brian Roberts, put him at second and sign a guy like Izturis as a stop gap. Either way, dude has upside.

burriss

just checked him out and he definitely looks like a player we should pursue

by semaj2989 on Dec 7, 2008 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

as I recall Law doesn't like him

doesn’t think he’ll hit

http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=31511

his minor league stats are less than compelling, though he didn’t spend too much time above A+ ball

by pipkin on Dec 7, 2008 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

I'm more concerned about defense

If he can hit .260 or higher, I’m happy. Just have a slick glove and we’ll figure the rest out.

by Dr Orpheus on Dec 8, 2008 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

well, that's ok

but don’t give up a lot for him in that case.

by pipkin on Dec 8, 2008 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Doesn't look too good on the glove either

45 E in 189 G.

So, no.

This will be my signature until the Orioles get a real SS.

errors ain't everything

though they’re not exactly ideal, either

by pipkin on Dec 8, 2008 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

If I had advanced fielding stats on him

… I’d post em, but I don’t.

But I’d trade Luis Luis for him, I guess.

This will be my signature until the Orioles get a real SS.

by CoachOfEarl on Dec 8, 2008 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I'd give up a low-A arm

You know, one of those guys who throws hard but little else and has upside as maybe the next Cabrera. Those guys are a dime a dozen.

Burriss

Emmanuel Burriss is also from the District of Columbia….

yahoo's tim brown

says the O’s are definitely in on Furcal and would “sign him as a complement to Texiera”
