ramon hernandez (rumor)

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/ramon-hernandez.html

The link says the o's are trying to swap hernandez's contract for another utility player or something like that.. the article directly mentions ryan freel.. also says that the reds would throw in another prospect and the o's would have to eat part ramon's contract... on freel, i only remember him as an outfielder but he might be able to play ss? i could see them putting Luke Scott at DH and putting freel in the outfield.. I don't remember too much about ryan freel except he made a lot of crazy outfield plays... what do you guys think about bring freel in for hernandez? and would greg zaun be brought in for a year to give wieters some time in AAA?

Freel at SS

I forgot about that, I have no idea if he can really play the position.

My biggest concern would be him taking out Roberts trying for a grounder up the middle.

I wouldn't be concerned at all

It would be nice to have someone who’s not a clown at SS

I believe

That Freel actually played every position but catcher for the Reds over the last couple years. Competency might be a question mark, but at least if he’s merely sub-par, he’s still better than our other choices, and can hit for some average and cause mayhem on the bases.

Also

I would trade Ramon for a bag of baseballs if it loosened up some salary for a big Texeira deal. I still think we can build around him if the deal is long-term (which it would have to be). It would be embarassing to see who starts at catcher if they want to hold Wieters at AAA until May, though.

no it wouldn't

that Ramon Hernandez was our starting catcher all of last year was more than enough embarassment for us all

where’s quiroz? he could fit in for a couple of months…

What up?

outrighted

According to Roch, Quiznos just got outrighted, along with Fredy Deza

by milkman41 on Dec 8, 2008 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

I'm a little confused

The great and powerful Quiroz wasn’t that bad last year. He seemed to mesh well with the staff and played good defense. Sure his bat did nothing, but I’m still a bit surprised.

Fredy who?

by Dr Orpheus on Dec 9, 2008 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

they want him off the 40 man for now

I’m sure he’ll be in the mix. Guys like that always get outrighted before the Rule 5 so they can protect who they need to protect. Quiroz is a guy you don’t find room for until you need to.

Not a SS

According to Baseball Reference, Freel has never played shortstop in a major league game. I think he came up as a 2B with Toronto.

Freel is a useful player on a good team, but really he wouldn’t be more than a speedy version of Chris Gomez, or maybe Millar because he gets on base a little (or used to, at least). It wouldn’t be a disaster, but I wouldn’t get excited about it, and it does nothing in the long term unless in clears some salary (I read that the Reds want the Os to pay some of Hernandez’s salary, which would kind of defeat the purpose).

by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Dec 8, 2008 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct

Only 2b or 3b. I think Freel is what is known as a hustler, gamer, run through walls (literally) type, high energy. All the things Ramon hasnt been the last two years.

Still rather have a prospect but let it rip, means we should see Weiters by late May.

by sanders833 on Dec 8, 2008 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

you know

To free up salary and unload an unhappy camper like Ramon (As much as it saddens me, since I used to love him so…I’ll miss what we had, Ramon. But our love died long ago.), I’d be down with a speedy Chris Gomez or Millar. Chris Gomez and Millar are useful players, who would be more useful if they happened to be speedy.

well...

he had an off year a few years back, but the dude gets on base like no one’s business and can swipe a bag or two.

I think he had an off-year from a concussion

Due to playing too hard in the field. Colliding with a wall or another player or something. I’ll give a dude a pass for that kind of injury.

I think Dempsey mentioned this once or twice

Sure it wasn't 3DG or Cakes?

Freel

I doubt that the O’s see him as a starter. With this team carrying 12-13 pitcher at most times, they need as much versatility from the few bench guys as possible. He’s a fourth outfielder, and someone who can spell Brian at 2B. Essentially, he should take Fay-Fay out of the discussion once and for all…that’s my hope, anyway.

by Brotz13 on Dec 9, 2008 9:48 AM EST reply actions

would probably take montanez out too..

What up?

by snakethejake on Dec 9, 2008 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

I'd take Freel

He’d be a good short term replacement for Roberts if he’s dealt and, as others have mentioned, he gives us good bench flexibility if we’re carrying lots of pitchers. We’d need a decent prospect too if we’re giving up a catcher of Ramon’s quality in a market with demand for catching. I don’t care if we have to eat some of his salary.

Done deal?

Roch seems to be saying so in the comments:

http://masnsports.com/2008/12/another-bidder-for-ramon.html

Although I would love to get Kendall.

This will be my signature until the Orioles get a real SS.

seems to think it’s a done deal, too.

MBTRR

is now referring to it in the past tense (i.e. hernandez + $1 mill “traded” for freel and two prospects.

This is a great deal for the Os

and I’m hoping these are actual prospects and not just two minor league relievers on their forth organization.

These

guys are funny.

They must think they are getting Johnny freakin’ Bench in this deal.

IF Paul Bako was your catcher

you would be thinking Ramon Hernandez was an upgrade. Catcher has been the Reds sore spot for some years offensively. Kind of the Brandon Fahey spot for the Reds. They also think Ramon’s ability to communication with Volquez and Cueto will help.

Its a good trade cause both boards are happy to see the other go.

Fingers crossed we actually get a prospect.

I can't

wait until Razor throws his third or fourth snap throw into the OF during the first week of the season.

I vote for bringing back Sal Fasano (if he’s still alive) to catch for two weeks in May!!!
