O's trade Hernandez, put pressure on Wieters

I don't mean to put any pressure on the kid, but they might as well just rename Baltimore "Wietersville" and get it over with. In a trade with the Reds in which Baltimore received Ryan Freel and minor league infielders Justin Turner and Brandon Waring for Ramon Hernandez, the Orioles netted a useful, if slightly expensive, utility player in Freel. But the primary long-term purpose of the move was to clear a spot for Baseball America 2008 Minor League Player of the Year, switch-hitting catcher Matt Wieters, who could probably start 2009 in the majors but will certainly be ready by midyear.Freel had a three-year run as a good utility player who could get on base and fill holes in center or in the middle infield, but he has played less than a full season over the past two years because of injuries. Assuming the hamstring injury hasn't robbed him of his speed, he has value on the field and should attract trade interest in July.
Given the number of teams looking for catching help, it's a bit surprising that Baltimore couldn't get a package including at least one solid prospect. Turner is probably an extra guy in the majors, although with a little luck he could turn into an everyday second baseman. He is a well-below-average runner who makes a lot of contact but doesn't have power or hit many line drives. He can't be a utility player because he can't play short. Waring is an organizational outfielder with atrocious plate discipline; he struck out in more than one-third of his 2008 at-bats despite being old (23) for the Midwest League.
Freel was superfluous in Cincinnati, where the Reds already have more outfielders than they can use (once they acknowledge that Edwin Encarnacion can't play third), and they didn't give up any prospects they're likely to miss. They haven't gotten any offense from their catchers since 2006. Cincinnati catchers hit .234 BA/.330 OBP/.351 SLG in 2008 and .227/.286/.388 in 2007 -- a bar so low that Hernandez has cleared it in the past two years despite not hitting all that well himself. The problem with Hernandez is that his defense has gone in the tank the past two years, and he doesn't play with much energy at a position that demands it. It's possible that his contract year and diminished prospects will provide the kick in the shorts he needs, but that's a bit of a gamble for the Reds.

Seems like he's not too high on anyone in the deal
haha.
I mean, whatever. This is really about Wieters, plus the outside chance of flipping Freel in July if he plays well. Not to mention plugging in this second baseman dude if they trade brian bob in july.

save a little money,
organizational depth, use Freel as a utility player

I don’t think he understands why the trade was made… other than for MW… There are prob 25 teams out there that would have traded for Ryan Freel and two prospects for a dying catcher that look horrible in the field last year. Once again…. organizational depth something the Orioles do not have right now.. but got more off…. I think Ramon will have a decent year but his years as a top-teir starter are over this was made known last year.

"I think Ramon will have a decent year but his years as a top-teir starter are over"
When did they start? He really only had two seasons where (1) he hit, and (2) stayed healthy.

that may be true
But ask yourself this: If they don’t have Wieters (or a similarly advanced catching prospect in the system) do the Orioles trade Ramon? Seems unlikely.
Thus, the trade really is for Wieters. The other stuff is just gravy. Plus, they had to send cash along with Ramon. I’m guessing the “prospects” are mostly in exchange for the cash.

Do they trade him...
NO question you trade him, with or without Matt Wieters coming up…… The orioles are rebuilding… Anybody well almost anybody looked better than he did behind the plate last year… Ramon alone cost the O’s game last year in my opinon with passed balls at key moments… If they Orioles were to bring Wieters up and have him there, wow what a bad example for a prospect to learn from…. Not that Wieters needs to learn much, the man is the real deal holyfield…. Take that to the bank….

not his wife, but girlfriend
Something about Erickson and GF got into fight. GF wouldn’t leave Erickson’s apt. Erickson then grabbed GF by the hair and dragged her out.

I just thought
about Chris Rock’s line about never hitting a girl but “I’ll shake the shit out of her.” Not that I think that way it was just the first thing that popped into my head.

This is an interesting comment
Are you saying that athletes are generally assholes? Or that athletes generally marry women with whom they do not get along? Or that men generally beat their wives?

i see what he's saying, i think
Athletes are generally less mature than other men their ages. All that early greatness and wealth makes you not have to grow up. People with adolescent or early-20s mentalities are more likely to not have learned right from wrong in the way that we might expect. They haven’t been adequately socialized, I guess is what I’m saying.
I should mention, I’m 22, so I totally just threw my entire age group under the bus there.

I just turned 26
and have both been through college and TA’d some 101 classes, so I can see where you’re coming from as far as immature behavior is concerned. And while I have seen guys be disrespectful to women and be just plain dickheads, I haven’t seen many guys hit a woman. I think there’s immature, and then there’s scumbag, and I think the former may be common but the latter probably isn’t.
Although I’ve listened to Rob Dibble talk about his divorce and – my fellow XMers can attest to this – I don’t doubt that he’d gladly punch his ex-wife in the face and take the charges. So who knows.

well...
and scotty’s gf recanted, if i’m not mistaken. i’m not going to say they’re aren’t mischief makers out there seeking ti get dudes in trouble, but abusers and abusees seem to find each other and the pattern generally ends up w/ the abusee letting the abuser off the hook. i admit bias here, having worked at a dv clinic, but, man…i’ve said it before, i’ll say it again: if pro sports brass really want to impress me w/ how much they care, they’ll install zero-tolerance dv policies. way more insidious than PEDs, if you ask me.
