Sadly yes...
I really wanted to see Huff, Millar, or Payton get traded.  I'm not even being unrealistic in thinking they'll trade Gibbons.

Who will be our setup guy?
The structure is supposedly Bradford and Walker as 7th inning specialists with Sherrill closing. Any opinions on who will mind the gap as our setup man?

Besides Burres, I haven't seen any of the other relievers pitch, and Burres definitely can't be the guy. The only time I saw him pitch in person last year was at the Cell vs the White Sox when he started. His line was about as miserable as it gets: 1.1IP, 6H, 7R, 7ER, 1BB, 2K, 2HR, 49 pitches

Aquino and Sarfate are options
I was also at that game.  It was painful to see him struggle so mightily.

One exception
I like this Nick Markakis guy.  Sure he's no Jay Gibbons, but I think he'll find a way to make the team ;)

In terms of what I think will happen, I believe Patton will be in AAA and that either Olson or Penn gets the #5 spot in the rotation.  I'd like to see a number of guys traded (Walker, Bradford, Ramon, Sherrill, Mora, Millar) and a few others dfa'd (Fahey, Luis Hernandez).  I would also like to see a rotation of Guthrie, Cabrera, Loewen, Penn, Olson (or Albers).  And then a pen of: Hoey, Bierd, F. Cabrera, Aquino, Burress, Sarfate, Albers (or Olson).  Hopefully those 3 relievers can yield a few middle infielder prospects.

But man alive does this team suck.

Why
Penn or Albers over Patton?  Olson, maybe.  Although I think they're honestly about neck and neck with Patton looking a little more ready from his cup o' joe last season than Olson.

Patton
I don't think Patton has proved himself in AAA whereas Penn has.  Plus, Patton's peripherals are a little disconcerting.

Who?
Anyone have the skinny on Greg Aquino and Randor Bierd? Who are they/how did they get here?

by RobG on Feb 13, 2008 8:49 PM EST reply actions

Aquino was a free agent
and Bierd a Rule V pick.

Aquino has been around:

Bierd has not:

http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=17201

as a Rule V pick he's gotta stay on the roster all year, hidden on DL, or offered back to the Tigers.

I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

Just a few...
First question, what about Loewen?

Second, isn't Baez out for the season?

Third, when has Penn, in the last two years, shown that he's any more then a flash in a can?  He was fine when he was first brought up, terrible since then.  Even in the minors he was bad.

Forth, what happened to Fahey?  Triple-A?

Fifth, didn't MacPhail and Trembley say that Jones would get started lower in the batting order because they didn't want to throw him in the fire?  Doesn't that mean...in the seven or eight hole?

Sixth, you'd rather have Huff at first then Millar or Moore?

This concludes my questions for now, good evening.

Great Orioles moment
last year when during the season both Chris Ray and Danys Baez were already pronounced out for the entire '08 season.

At this point I consider Hayden Penn a lost cause. Don't worry, we got a ton of other viable starter prospects for the future. I'll be honest: I wanna see Radhames Liz make the team, he's a tiny bit intriguing.

Someone please introduce Fahey to a training table. I wish he would make the team, too much defensive versatility.

Can't we just see Jones hit second? Try unconventional things Trembley.

If having Huff at First means we will get to see alot of Moore at third, I'm all for it.

Ray...
According Roch, Ray is suppose to start his throwing program today and believes he'll be pitching in the majors by August.  If true, that's good that we'll actually get a look at him again before the end of the season.

Jones will start batting 7th or 8th
and work his way up the lineup in due course, just like Darling Nicky did.

OK. let's pretend I never used that nickname.

My point is, Nick's first two months were nothing to write home about. But he got better. And the O's are in a position to do the same thing with Jones. Let's hope they show the same patience again, and there's no reason they shouldn't. We're gonna finish 5th either way, right?

I remember 14 straight foul balls in one at-bat.

i just about had a heat attack...
when i read that they were talking about signing corey or putting payton in center if jones got off to a slow start.
So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

Jones batting 7 or 8 for the first three months...
I was actually questioning the assertion "This is all an exact copy of the real opening day lineup, because im just that good."

by Dr Orpheus on Feb 14, 2008 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

my humble opinion
2b  Roberts (for now)
3b  Mora
rf  Markakis
1b  Millar
DH  Huff
lf  Scott
C   R. Hernandez
cf  A.Jones
ss  L.Hernandez (or Cintron)

bench:  Quiroz, Moore, Payton, Bynum

rotation:  Guthrie, Traschel, Loewen, Cabrera, Patton
bullpen:  Burres, Mickolio, Sarfate, Bradford, Walker, Sherrill, Aquino

i actually think they'll use Aquino and Sherrill like Dibble and Myers back with the Nasty boys.

Albers, Penn, Olson and Liz make a pretty good rotation for Norfolk, with F. Cabrera and Hoey closing things out.  It's called organizational depth, something not seen around here for a while.

and yes, that means i think they eat Gibbons' contract.

I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

by Dave at Bottomfeeder Baseball on Feb 14, 2008 12:07 PM EST reply actions

see...
i'm guessing they give bierd a shot in the pen (i.e. no mickolio for now).
So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

by jq higgins on Feb 14, 2008 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Gibbons
As much as I would like for them to show Gibby the door, I gotta believe he's gonna start the season on the 25 man roster. I think Gibbons might be dfa'd by the end of the season, and Mora and Millar (maybe Razor) will be moved by the trading deadline. We're stuck with Huff and Payton.

I take it outright release for
violating league substance policy never got off the ground...

What a shame.

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.
