Bob Knight...
Resigning mid season???  Whatever happened to never quit.  I've never been one to crusify Bobby for getting a little physical and agressive with his players; mostly because for the most part these guys can take it.  They aren't flowers and nearly all of his ex-players seem to have great respect for the guy.

But quitting before the end of the season seems a little odd to me.

Knight
The official reason is that he wanted to give his kid time to introduce his style of basketball before just taking over in the offseason.

I have to think there's more to it than that. Rick Barnes at Texas said he was concerned about Knight's health recently, and it would seem to me that that probably had something to do with it. When people read, "He was exhausted," they just think about fatigue and mental burnout. Bob Knight doesn't seem like the type to go public with ailing health, and I would say there's a fairly good chance he left mid-season because he just can't do the schedule and the travel any longer.

Frankly, he doesn't look so great these days.

I am a Bob Knight fan. I am not a John Thompson, John Chaney or Bob Huggins fan.

I saw ol' Bobby
in Austin when the Raiders played the Horns a few weeks ago, and was pretty upset that he didn't get up out of the chair ONCE the entire game.  And his team was fouling up and down the court, so you know he had plenty to be pissed about.  I knew something was up.

Hey, nobody's perfect. And as someone who was penalized for a late hit (out of bounds) in h.s. football and ejected once for unsportsmanlike in lacrosse-- by his own coach -- I'm in no position to moralize about bad behavior on the field. Those were both cheap, chicken-sh*t, frustration hits. You get caught up; it happens; you apologize; and you try never to let it happen again. After my second, it didn't.

In any case, that's part of childhood. What I don't get about BK is the never-grow-up thing. As an adult, coaching two h.s. sports -- and wanting very much to motivate my players, win games and the rest, just like any coach -- I was never, ever tempted to scream obscenities at the media, throw furniture, humiliate a ref, bitch-slap my players and so on.

BK fans are welcome to him. I can't bear the guy, never could-- probably because he reminds me of the worst moments of teenage me writ very, very large.

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.

Sup Everybody
I came across this page about a week ago while rabidly grasping for any Erik Bedard news I could get my grubby little paws on. I've been very impressed with the content on the site and how knowledgeable and devoted the fans/members are, so I just joined up. I've been a diehard O's fan for 10 years now (I picked a bad time to get into baseball in Baltimore) and I love nothing more than to talk some MLB/Orioles. Just wanted to introduce myself around these parts.

I came across this site during finals last semester (my study habits could use some work i guess), and i've also been impressed with how quickly it gets updated.  I realized I needed a place to talk about baseball because my friends/family dont care nearly as much as I do about it.  Its so refreshing to be able to chat baseball with people who know the O's well. I've been an O's fan as long as I can remember, but just became what I would call diehard 3 or so years ago.  I look forward to chatting baseball with ya'll once during the actual season begins (and/or bedard finally gets dealt).

OMG you're right!
First it was the thing about only White Landowners being able to vote for Representatives in the House and the President (through the Electoral College though) - and State Legislatures choosing Senators.    Then there was the "compromise" about Slaves being worth 1/3 of a person to up Electoral Votes and Legislative Districts despite the fact that none of them had the semblance of a say.

And till this day, despite some gains in equality, it's a persistent Electoral Colllege, Superdelegates, and a Senate that's designed to kill legislation via parliamentary tactics such as filibusters & blocks on votes, requiring often a nearly impossible to come by 60% majority in order to get anything through.

Now that's what I call Freedom!  (Freedom to pay your bills - and take out some more credit cards.)

ON TONYSTARKS BINGING AND DON BELLISARIO'S BEST
Hi!  Just discovered this site and was shocked by the content.  I don't usually run into people with unrelated interests that I share.  Like baseball and cartoons/comics.  The last thing I expected to see on an O's site was the Cobra insignia.  But, with links to key members of the Cobra hierarchy?  Unheard of.  It can only be taken as a sign.  Remember Broca Beach?  On an even weirder note, I notice a member posting with the name jq higgins, an obvious allusion to one of the greatest television shows of all time, Magnum, p.i.  Props to you Higgy baby.  Finally, Robert Downey is a perfect pick to play Iron Man's alter ego, Tony Stark, no?  Same 'stache, same history of substance abuse, but I digress.  At one time a very good friend of mine suggested Selleck play Tony but I could never see it.  My pick was Charles Bronson...yeah anywho, signing off!

Any Cap's fans?
I love this year's team a ton. The best Caps team in a while. Ovechkin is pretty much already in Bobby Orr/Maurice Richard/Mario Lemieux/Wayne Gretzky level. With him, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green and Alexander Semin, this team will be good for a long time. It's hard to gauge how good an offensive player Backstrom really is because he plays on a line with Ovechkin and thats pretty much good for 40 assists a year, but he is a great skater and close to a shutdown defender against opposing centerman. Kolzig finally looks like age has finally caught up to him , and we are probably going to have to score 4-5 goals a game to win consistently the rest of the season.

I went to my first Caps game since the move to Verizon Center in December, and took my wife. She knows NOTHING about hockey. And even she could tell the game was different when #8 was on the ice. At first, she said, "Why are they all standing around waiting on him?" and within 3 shifts, she saw why. The game just changes when he's on the ice, because EVERYONE - refs, opposing team, teammates - know they need to know where he is, because he can the game at any time.

I grew up outside of Rochester and now live in Syracuse. The Yanks pretty much dominate the entire state, though the Mets have their fair share of fans. You'll find a rare Blue Jay fan in Syracuse, Oriole fan (now Twin fan. sigh.) in Rochester, and Indian fan in Buffalo, but it's pretty rare. Shouldn't these people have some loyalty to their AAA players?

Have you always been in Buffalo? How'd you get to be an O's fan? The Red Wings did it for me. Back when the O's had a farm system.

I grew up in North Western PA and went to college near Buffalo (Houghton College, Houghton, NY).  The Yankees are killer up there.  The only redeeming thing about being in that area was being near the Red Wings but then half-way through college the O's switched to Ottowa.

I can't think of a single O's fan from the town I grew up in other than my dad and myself.  I caught tons of flack, especially because I was a Ripken and Brady Anderson lover.

Admit it, you chuckled.

I dunno, though. The only thing I can figure is maybe it's related to what I recall from h.s.: at wrestling matches, when refs awarded points to one of the contestants, they did it by pointing at the scoring wrestler with the left hand and signalling with right how many points had been earned: one finger for an escape, two for a take-down or a reverse, three for a near-fall, etc.

It became part of our school "language": if somebody made a really funny/cool/etc. remark, you'd point a finger at him, hold up two fingers from your other hand and say "Two!" or "Two points!"

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.

Memorial Stadium Trivia
Around the top rim of Memorial Stadium there were flags representing each city that had a major league ball club.  One of these flags had a typo. I noticed this in the early 80s, and they may have fixed it eventually.  Can you name the city that was misspelled?

Interesting
I've thought of that too. He would be a good clubhouse presence and fan favorite over the next couple years of rebuilding. My feeling, though, is that he will be leaving his peak years just as we should be (hopefully) contending. Roberts then becomes dead (or almost dead) weight at the time we need him most.

Baseball Reference puts Julio Lugo as the most similar batter through age 29 as Roberts. You can't say that he's aged gracefully.

I guess it all depends, again, on what we can get for him. I haven't been overwhelmed by the Cubs offers for someone who was arguably the best 2B in the league last season and comes with 2 contract years during his prime at a reasonable salary. I'd be much more comfortable waiting and trading him in mid-season than doing the same with Bedard.

Roberts extension
"Roch is saying the O's FO is trying to convince B-Rob to stay with a 5 yr extension and the possible signing of Texiera..."

That's not what Roch said.  He said, "someone in the organization... suggested" that the O's extend roberts.  Not that the O's are actually trying to convince him to sign an extension.

yeah well....
Tejada was promised they'd build a team around him. That went really well. The O's have started a rebuild, but can Roberts trust them to carry through? Personally, I'm not even on the fence. I still have both feet on the skeptical side and am watching. Roberts strikes me as a conscientious guy, so it must be a little tough for him. Unless his shit bucket is full and his mind is made up to get out (like Bedard).

Baltimore fans keep chattering about Teixeira. I think it's a long shot that he appears in an O's uni.

Since this is an open thread
Can we change the banner from "In MacPhail We Trust" so something like

"In MacPhail We Sorta Kinda Trust"

or

"In MacPhail We Trust - Because He's All We Got"

"This is Birdland"

no
I am venturing to swear my allegiance to Andy MacPhail. I think he's done alright getting nine players in return for Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada. This is Birdland, motherfucker!
