Enjoy Adam Jones

Hey there.  Visiting M's fan here.  I'm going to be honest, I hate this deal...I love Erik Bedard, but we've given far too much for him.  Have fun watching Adam Jones blossom into a superstar.

Basically, what you've got is a legit all-star CF, the best setup man in baseball (and he can close), a major league ready reliever with a good heater (Mickolio, pronounced Mick-oh-lie-oh) and two top of the rotation prospects, and you'll likely have at least one of the two develop into legitimate major league contributors.

That said, I hope we never trade with you guys again.  Peter Angelos is just a chore to deal with.  I applaud you fans for being able to do it.

I'll enjoy watching Bedard pitch in Safeco, and hopefully he wins a Cy Young or two while he's here.  That said, I'll be following the careers of all our old prospects, they're a good bunch.  You guys are fleecing us.

Have fun with your shiny new .300/.360/.500 bat, gold glove CF!

thanks!
I loved Bedard the last season and a half or so when he was really dominant, but I'm REALLY looking forward to the Jones-Markakis duo in the outfield. We were fielding Fernando Tatis in left field two years ago, splitting time with Brandon Fahey. Having two legit talents out there is mind-boggling.

I hope Bedard does well in Seattle. And I hope he helps y'all contend. E.B. deserves a winner.

Don't expect much in the way of quotes. He's reserved. But he's also slyly funny. In many ways he reminds me of Mike Mussina.

seconded...
his post-game interviews are a riot.
So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

for the record...
i'm pretty satisfied w/ the deal and the prospect of having a major league caliber outfield.  what happens at shortstop and maybe 2nd is a longterm concern, but for now, i am sated.

re:
Hey, this is the first meaningful trade in over 10 years, or even the entire Angelos tenure. So past history indicates the odds are good that the Mariners won't have to deal with him again for quite a while.

I feel so guilty
right now. I would have done Pacman for Bedard straight up. Still can't feel bad for M's fans, I have a feeling Felix Hernandez/Erik Bedard could trump John Lackey/Kelvim Escobar and C.C. Sabathia/Fausto Carmona this year.

um
let's not call Adam Jones "Pacman."

Seems like bad juju to me.

by pipkin on Feb 8, 2008 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed
That is really bad juju.

Yeah
I just posted that on something else.  That can't be helpful.

In this context it just means "energy." Good or bad energy. In this case calling a player the same thing as one of the scummiest players in a pretty scummy league is "bad" juju.

Going out on a limb...
A thought occurred to me.  Jones began his minor league career at SS.  Can we convert him back into a SS?  My thinking is it'll be easier to find a decent CF out there than a SS who projects the way he does as a hitter.  What do y'all think of this?  As I say I'm just going out on a limb.

Looking at his minor league stats...
I know fielding percentage is a questionable stat and all, but he had one of 94.2% in his roughly 280ish games played at SS. If that translated to the bigs, he would be the worst fielding SS in the league.

Crappy, riddled with holes argument I know. But I'm just gonna guess that theres a good reason the Mariners scouts/front office decided to move him from SS.

And even if MacPhail and company decided to move Jones back to SS, he would need a lot of time in the minors to adjust.

Playing CF isn't the worst thing in the world, its still a relatively offensively challenged position.

supposedly...
lack of range at ss was his problem.  why that does not translate to cf, i do not know, b/c he's supposedly a ++ defender in cf.

well
we should be used to that...lack of range at SS.

SS is harder than CF
That's why so many guys move "down" or "rightward" on the defensive spectrum to CF.

The best athlete on the HS team always plays short. But once you hit the pros you usually have to switch off it. Happened to both Upton brothers.

Hell, Robin Yount did it in the pros. Jeter should've done it a few years ago. Cal did it (though he moved to third, but its the same principle).

Lots of guys played SS in high school or college, but most can't stick.

by pipkin on Feb 8, 2008 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

I really love that
he can come to the majors, and even if his bat was cold, and it was last year, Jones can still immediately contribute with his defense. Corey Patterson is even more expendable now, and he'll have to wait just like a ton of other guys who filed for free agency to figure out where he will report to for spring training.

the limb is broken
He's not a shortstop.

by Scott Christ on Feb 8, 2008 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Nope!
He was also a pitcher in high school.  Centerfield is definitely his position.  He's only played it for a year and a few months, but he's very good now, and will only get better.  His bat will fit much better in Camden than it would've in Safeco, too.

But, no, he's no longer a shortstop.  When I met Adam at the Olympia WA Mariners' Caravan stop (autograph signing and chit-chatting w/players), I asked him how he'd feel back at SS -- a rough transcript:

"No way! I'm a centerfielder now, and I'm not going back!"

He's got a heck of a 'tude -- very confident and borderline cocky.  Fantastic player, great kid, and I'm surely going to miss him...

Tyler Colvin
Was looking over the Cubs list of prospects and Colvin is rated higher than Pie.  Have they said they aren't willing to deal him too?  I think he has only played in AA though.  Just a thought.

I'm just surprised PGA didn't hire Bavasi and run this franchise even further into the ground!

Good luck Erik and Mariner fans!

"Angelos is just a chore to deal with"
Y'know, those aren't exactly the words we would've chosen to express this point, but boy do we catch your freakin' drift there, friend. Some of us spend half our time diagramming Rube Goldberg machines to inflict the most painful demise imaginable on PA and his demented progeny.

"I applaud you fans for being able to do it." When we actually "do it" to Petey, it will be in all the major newspapers. Applaud us then. And who cares if they catch us? We're already serving a 10-year sentence.

p.s. In a friendly kinda way, of course, I hope you were fleeced in this trade. But I've always liked the M's (and I actually liked the Pilots! Why didn't they keep the name, btw?), and I will follow Monsieur Buh-Dard's stellar adventures in the great NW with real interest. In any case, an Official Fleecing Assessment can only be performed at 1-year, 3-year and 5-year removes, of course, so there's certainly a chance that you may have the last chuckle after all. All the best!

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.
