Community Projection '08: Adam Jones

A true test of your projecting acumen!

Photo © Baltimore Sun

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Jones is 22 years old. He ripped up AAA ball last year at age 21.
2. Amazingly, he's the first Major League Baseball player in history named "Adam Jones."
3. He was still playing shortstop in 2005-06.

Jones' last three seasons:

AB AVG OBP SLG 2B HR RBI BB/K
2005 Inland Empire (A+) 271 .295 .374 .494 20 8 46 29/64
     San Antonio (AA) 228 .298 .365 .461 10 7 20 22/48
2006 Tacoma (AAA) 380 .287 .345 .484 19 16 62 28/78
     Seattle 74 .216 .237 .311 4 1 8 2/22
2007 Tacoma (AAA) 420 .314 .382 .586 27 25 84 36/106
     Seattle 65 .246 .300 .400 2 2 4 4/21

I know it's tough to project a guy with really no ML experience, but give it a go. This promises to be one of the more interesting projections.

The line: AB, AVG/OBP/SLG, 2B, HR, RBI, BB/K

I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

with young guys, you just never really know
Blue chip prospects flame out on a regular basis. Not saying Jones will, but theres always a shot (and its usually as about as equal as them blossoming into a star).

Im gonna take the pessimist route here and say Jones will have a less than ideal season. I say Jones struggles badly through May or so, Macphail decides he needs some additional seasoning in AAA, and in typical O's fashion Jay Payton somehow ends up 350+ ABs. Eventually, Jones returns shortly after the all star break and plays well enough to ensure continued optimism going into 2009.

355 ABs
.243/.310/.428
19 2Bs
12 HRs
42 RBI
30/81 K/BB

Of course I have no basis in my predictions, just completely random guesses.

who really knows
500 ABs

He will get the AB's, but disapoint.  People will criticize the Bedard trade and hopefully it doesnt get to Adam's head.

Adam
I think he'll play out there all year, no sending him back to the minors. But 2009 will be the year he breaks out, not 2008.

Agree
with most of the other predictions -- I don't see 2008 being his year. I think he'll struggle with strikeouts, post a low AVG/OBP with good power.

AB: 500
AVG/OBP/SLG: .250/.303/.430

HR: 19
RBI: 78

Hard to know for sure about the power, though -- last year in AAA is really promising.

He's only been an Orioles for a month but I love this guy.  I heard on XM radio this morning.  He went on this spiel about how he knows that everybody is counting the O's out but he sees some really talent here and he know that the team is going to play the Yanks and RS tough.  Yeah, it's standard BS but I love his optimistic, go get them attitude.

Swinging for the fences
Putting him near the bottom of the lineup and having Markakis being able to counsel him (Nick was in a similar situation 2 yrs ago) makes me more optimistic than I should be. Trembley's also patient and won't bench the kid. I'm actually more worried about his glove, considering he's still relatively new to CF.

Celeb look-alike?
Is it just me, or does he look a lot like Gilbert Arenas in that pic? From the shots I've seen of him, he doesn't look like Gilbert. I should fly down to Ft Lauderdale just to answer this burning question. And then head over to A1A and Beachfront Avenue to check out spring break activities. Not sure if that would make me feel young or old again.

AJ was on XM the other day
saying that he is having a great time with the Orioles and loves Trembley.  "All I can control is how much effort I put into the game, and I'm always gonna give my best" etc.  It was good to hear.

Also said that the O's "aren't gonna lay down for anybody" or something to that effect.  "Everyone has put us in last place, fourth place, already written us off, but we're not gonna make it easy for anyone."  I like your enthusiasm, AJ, but the O's are going to get spanked in a major way this season.  I hope you still have the same attitude going into next season, and the season after that.

by PhilR8 on Mar 14, 2008 7:40 PM EDT   0 recs

Jones
I really liked what I heard from Jones in that interview.  He didn't say the O's would be any good, he just said that the team had the potential to play everyone hard.  Like I said, it's standard BS from a player, but he seems realistic about the team's capability and he's enthusiastic about that.  Of course, Tejada said a lot of rah rah stuff when he first showed up.  Hopefully, the losing won't affect Jones in the same way.

My bad.  AJ has 139 Major League career AB going into this season, so he doesn't qualify for ROY consideration.  Damn.

I considered that...
