is Burres the firth starter???
really? that's the best they can do? i understand the "good soldier" thing from last year. but seriously? he's the best the Orioles can run out there every fifth day??
---------------
from Roch:
And more news
Garrett Olson has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.
The decision was made before today's workout, so it has nothing to do with him nailing Scott Moore on the elbow. Pure coincidence.
Matt Albers and Brian Burres are the top candidates to be the fifth starter if the Orioles don't make a trade. The loser could be a long reliever.
We can't forget about Jon Leicester, who makes Thursday's start.
----------
Pathetic. so much for "pitching and defense". criminy, give one of these guys, ANY OF THEM, a chance. think Burres is a long-term solution? look at these numbers and let me know if you really think so?

and Jon Leicester??? http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/leicejo01.shtml
ugh. it's hard not to throw up your hands at the whole thing. it's only March 18!!!

re:
I voted Burres in the recent poll if only because he does have experience, and I didn't know enough about Albers.
All these guys in AAA are not going to come up and pitch 6-7 innings. They'll abuse the bullpen. Seems to me at least Burres has a chance for a little consistency in getting to 6 innings. He may not do it well, but odds are better than with a guy really just coming up. Is Penn, Olson, or Liz going to be more reliable?
And why are we so upset about Burres as a #5? He is a swingman, so now he's swinging in. The opening day starter is rumored to be a spring training invitee without a big league contract. Cabrera is the highest paid starter. Loewen may be injured. No minor leaguer is clearly ready to be a consistent big league contributor. That's why a guy like Burres is a #5. He's just a symptom of a real big problem.

re:
Because Burres sucks and has zero upside. He's a garbage time pitcher. I don't buy that Brian Burres is going to get 6-7 innings any easier than Olson would.

Still, why the uproar? Olson will appear at some point. He was certainly underwhelming and mentally overmatched last year. Seems like he needs to be weaned a bit.
Olson, Albers, Burres. Why should I care who sucks it up at #5? If Olson needs seasoning, let Burres take the pounding in the meanwhile. The O's look to suck across the entire rotation, with Guthrie being the biggest question mark as to whether he'll be OK.
