Luis Hernandez to be named starting SS
Color me, well, underwhelmed. Despite doing the best he could to play his way OUT of the job, Luis Hernandez is expected to be named the starting shortstop for your Baltimore Orioles.
From today's The (Baltimore) Sun:
Hernandez has hold on shortstop
O's play Fahey at third and left field, leaving Hernandez the probable starter at short
By Roch Kubatko
VIERA, Fla. - Orioles manager Dave Trembley is prepared to name Luis Hernandez as his Opening Day shortstop. Now Hernandez has to be prepared for the challenges that await him, the kind that could loosen his grip on the job if he's not careful.
Hernandez committed his sixth error today in the Orioles' 2-1 loss to the Washington Nationals at Space Coast Stadium. He fielded a routine grounder from Ronnie Belliard with two outs in the second inning and sailed his throw over Scott Moore's head at first base. Nationals players sitting on a bench beside the dugout scattered to avoid being hit.(PHOTO via washingtonpost.com)
Thanks for the details, Roch. Nice touch.
Dear God, Luis Hernandez is going to be our starting shortstop. I just can't wrap my head around the abysmal depths of suckitude that symbolizes concerning the state of the Orioles.
Can we petition to the commissioner's office to be relegated to the International League now?

Luis
Luis will struggle to post a 285 OBP. Talk about an offensive blackhole. At least Jay Payton won't be getting 400 ABs. Or at least I hope.

What I don't get
is if Luiz isn't even hitting, why stick him out there? We can have Fahey man the position and actually, you know, field ground balls and have an OPS of .290 (maybe). Why trot Hernandez out there? But if we're in a position of having to choose between Hernandez and Fahey as our starting SS, we really are in deep shit.

Defense
It has to be the only reason to put him out there. Other than spring training, the kid is known for good range and a great arm. Hell, even Tejada has 4 errors this spring training.
Hopefully, he puts it together defensively, and I'll overlook the fact that he's unable to hit. Besides, we all know Fahey can't man a position as a starter because we've already tried that before.

SIX ERRORS IN ST????
I know it's Spring Training, but, really, SIX ERRORS? That's getting mighty close to unacceptable. If Hernandez can't hit, his raison d'etre on this team disappears completely.
/I always wanted to use that 4 years of HS French for something...

Really?
We've gone from Cal Ripken Jr. to Luis friggin' Hernandez?
I knew this was what people we're saying but I just couldn't convince myself it was really going to happen. Can't we still do that trade with the Cubs or something? God almighty.

good
Now everyone can see how bad he sucks. When I'm rooting for Brandon Fahey to win a job, I'm serious -- the guy sucks.

O Luis!
The O's better find a replacement for this kid or it's going to get ugly fast. I really feel Fahey should be starting instead of Luis. However, on a real major league team, neither of them would be in the lineup on a daily basis. MacPhail needs to start working some magic and continue this rebuilding project. As much as I hate to say it, BRob has to go. Hopefully his value will elevate while the O's hold on to him until the trading deadline when a real competitor is in desperate need of that extra boost.

on a good team
Neither Fahey or Luis would be above AAA. Actually in a good system, Luis wouldn't exist and Fahey would be a mainstay in AA.

B-Rob's not the only candidate
Let's face it, don't get used to R. Hernandez or Steve Traschel this year, either. ESPECIALLY Razor. If he hits anywhere near .280 with any kind of pop, some contender or delusional pretender will knock down our door for him. And trading Traschel can become a yearly tradition, kinda like it seemed it was with Jeff Conine.
And pray that Huff or Millar put up some numbers, too, because I bet if they get near the .290 mark, some pretender will con themselves into thinking "Just one more piece!" and try and do a rental, thinking they've stolen him from us when they offer a bag of unautographed balls and take 50% of the salary obligation and we accept.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a team in MLB dumb enough to take JayPay or Horseface Killah off our hands.

I gotta say...
....it's pretty liberating going into a season without even a whit of hoping of winning. Takes away some of the stress, you know?

you know what?
The most distressing thing about this might be the O's trying to play Fahey in LF again. Give it up. My garbage man would be happy to play left field for a major league team, too. Doesn't mean he should.

that's what Luke Scott was for.

Spring Training Audition my arse..
He had Luis in mind for SS all winter... and he had to play out of the position. And he did play out of the position. But Trembley's keeping him in there anyway. I'll question the move now for a little bit, then watch, and reanalyze the situation after a month of baseball.

Awful
Any chance Mike Gallego is on the waiver wire?
Seriously, this isn't pretty. Sweet Luis' line:
AB - 412
AVG - .203
OBP - .278
OPS - .561
HR - 1
RBI - 23
S - 4
E - 28
