They DID IT! Gibbons cut!
From The (Baltimore) Sun.
Here it is. Can't believe they made the smart decision in this case. I thought for certain Moore was headed to AAA and Gibbons was uselessly taking up bench space.

YES!
ive been waiting for 3:00 to come and bring the bad news, but i was holding out this glimmer... its like they actually are serious about wanting to win eventually!
i dont know about all of you, but this, to me, is one of the biggest signs that things might turn around i've seen in a looooong time.

Give and take
Eating that much salary isn't the best thing in the world for a rebuilding (or otherwise) team but Gibbons being gone is a huge plus. He has been dead weight for three years now. I'm excited.
Now, find someone to unload Huff and Millar onto and I might jump for jubilation.

with or without him, they have to pay the man. this is by far the lesser of the evils

Seriously.
That almost $12M is gone either way. Do you want him gone, too, or do you want him to stay and make our lineup worse by his presence?

why not waivers?
couldn't they put him on waiver then after he clears dump him? they might have been able to get a little something. either way he's gone and that's a plus

I'm sure they did this, and no one claimed him. I doubt McPhail is dumb enough to let him go without at least seeing if someone would eat the salary first.
by punkrawka on Mar 30, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
nobody would've been stupid enough
to make a waiver claim and solve the Orioles' problem, especially knowing that if they wanted Gibbons they'd be able to get him without ponying up the cash.

Gee...
do I claim him know and his $11.9 MILLION contract, or what a few days and sign him for the minimum?
Hmm.....
Yeah, I can see how GMs would have problems solving that dilemma...

Sorry...
just giddy at the prospect of never seeing Jay Gibbons in an Orioles uniform again.

I was just wondering if the O's tried to get something for nothing

Interesting offseason.
Once again, I'm pleased with the way our team is being administered and managed.

State the obvious
Gibbons is wasted money no matter what the O's did. If he stayed he'd also waste a roster spot. It's not like they had to spend much of anything to replace him. This is one more piece of evidence that MacPhail means business. Let's hope Angelos allows it to continue.

From my now deleted FP post...
I'm so happy I could cry. OK, it's a bit much to have that much excitement at another human being have his employment terminated, but screw it - he's still gonna get his money and I don't have to watch him anymore!
Seriously, what this does mean is, without a doubt, Andy MacPhail has the last call on all baseball decisions. If we needed any more evidence, this is the closer. The man has carte blanche to do what needs to be done.
My God, the Orioles are being run by an actual adult with an understanding of baseball. I wasn't sure that would ever happen again in my life.

MacPhail on the decision
"I certainly talked to Peter about it as I do with all the big decisions we make," MacPhail said. "I gave him the ramifications and what my thinking was. I hadn't really reached any conclusions myself. I was wrestling with this one. I was really, to be honest with you, looking for some advice. His advice was, 'You got to do what you got to do.' Those were the last words that he left me with and I took the position of well, this is what we have to do."
As expected, MacPhail ran it by Angelos. I mean, PGA is the guy who's got to cut checks for almost $12M to this guy for another 19 months or so. But PGA let him do it.
That quote from MacPhail speaks volumes - "You got to do what you got to do." Thank God he's seen the light.

Now you all know
Some other team will pick him up and he will hit 30 HR again. Not saying we should have kept him by any stretch. But still, it's gonna happen.

No way..
gibby gets picked up by another team - unless its a minor league deal that someone wants to take a flyer on... he is a last on the pine player at best and his best years are behind him. I feel bad for the guy, but hopefully he'll use the $'s he will receive wisely.

Gibbons got a $12M parting gift
He won at life. Don't feel sorry for him; I certainly don't.
by PhilR8 on Mar 30, 2008 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And have you seen his wife?
There's NOTHING to feel sorry about with Jay Gibbons. He ends up taking the O's for $21 M (don't forget, he's already been paid $9M, and has $11.9 coming) and is married to a hot lawyer.

Yeah, I'm not hosting any pity parties for Jay Gibbons anytime soon.

He'll catch on somewhere
He's worth the major league minimum for some team to take a chance on him.

Seriously...
I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see some pretend-contender to sign him. He will cost them only the minimum, and he still collects the balance on his O's contract, minus whatever peanuts the new club pays him.
Yeah, he will live on to disappoint fans in a new town soon...

I doubt even that, considering our hitters, if he can't even make what is the consensus worst team in baseball, I don't think anyone is even going to throw a minor-league deal at him, not with Julio Franco still out there.
I bet he goes on the road giving speeches about the evils of PED's to kids, and then he and John Rocker star in Jose Canseco's movie.

EAT IT GIBBONS
Yeah, he'll get signed somewhere. And he'll get cut when they find out he can't play. There is an Aruban jet ski punching incident's worth of difference between him and Sidney Ponson at this point.

It's a new day in Baltimore
This is a great day, I've never been happier with a roster move in my life, except for maybe when they finally cut Luis Matos. Can we get the Roster on the left side updated so I don't look over there alarmed that somehow he'd been resigned?
by nesloq on Mar 30, 2008 10:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
from the article
Gibbons had developed into one of the club's most popular players, and he also had several productive seasons for the Orioles.
Umm, WTF? Which Jay Gibbons are they talking about?
by zknower on Mar 30, 2008 11:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Possibly meant
most popular player among his teammates.
'Cause he sure as hell wasn't with the fans...

he was early on
He was a guy hitting a few homers when wasn't nobody hittin' no homers. Plus like I said before, he was easy to root for. Rule 5 picks are like adopted children.
