Spring Training Round-Up 03/06
Another glorious day for baseball, and back to back losses for the Birds. Our #3 & #4 starters pitched and we weren't able to come up with wins. These are the games that the good teams will find ways to win, but we are young and we will find our stride soon enough.
Steve Trachsel's outting was pretty good for Trachsel standards. 2 ER over 3 IP, 6 base runners, a walk and a strike out. If he can make his starts between 5-6IP, 3 ER or less this year, then it is a great start for Trachsel. I have to give it up to the vet for coming back to this team. He knows he's a stop gap and probably going to get traded again, but he was willing to come back and be the veteran presence we wanted.
Daniel Cabrera was much different from before, and most Orioles fans new it was only a matter of time before we would see it. I am glad it happened the start after his good one because I want to see if he can bounce back with another quality outting. Anyway, you can't jump completely on Cabrera's case as 2 of the 5 runs scored in the first inning were earned. Hopefully, he rebounds but he did his job to ground the hope of some that saw his first performance. I predict he will be better than last year, and Kranitz will help him.
Mike Costanzo is Scott Moore light. Ok, maybe he's like Version B. Anyway, Mike had a great game and has looked good in his last 2 games. He is showing his ability to hit home runs and his versatility with the ability to play the corners, and how he is a little behind on the catching. I guess that's to be expected. He's doing whatever he can to make the team but there is nothing he can do except hope Scott Moore falls off the planet. They both are lefty swingers who play the same positions. Costanzo is on a minor league deal, so he loses by default. Hopefully, we'll see him soon in Baltimore later this year.
Props to the bullpen for backing up Steve Trachsel with 6 scoreless innings. Sherrill, Bradford, Cormier (yeah... I know, I was shocked too), Deza (still shocked), Bob McCrory (no one is surprised), and Greg Aquino. The last name is the one I want to highlight. I know a lot of people are pulling for Hoey to get a spot in the bullpen, but I believe Aquino will land the role as he will give the Orioles a veteran closer should Sherrill fallout. Hoey struggled last year in his call-up, and I believe with all the arms that he'll be kept in AAA and be one of the first to get a call to the show. Aquino and Hoey are pitching really well this spring training, so it should be a story to follow.
Tike Redman is someone I pull for because he played hard last year and proved he deserves a big league job. The problem is that he's another left handed swinger. Yes, he can play centerfield, but so can Jay Payton and his right handed bat off the bench is more valuable than another set of legs. He is batting .300 this spring and playing well, but without a move of Jay Payton, I am having problems finding a spot on the bench for him. If Scott Moore is looked at as the much better offensive option than Brandon Fahey for utility man, then Redman may make it as a pinch runner and spelling of Adam Jones in center.
Back-up catcher update... Guillermo Quiroz is winning. By a lot. He is batting .545 and showing good promise. Chris Heintz is batting .231 while Ben Davis is batting a whopping .091. Trembley always says, if you can hit, we'll find a spot for you on the team. Well, Quiroz can hit.
Dennis Sarfate took his news about being on the major league team in stride, came out, and pitched 1.2 innings, gave up 1 hit, 1 BB, and 1 K of scoreless baseball. I hope I am right and he lands a late inning set-up role.
Last part of the entry, the Scott Moore Update. He's got a slight abdominal strain and will need a few more days. My take on this is he needed to take some time off to heal from the burns because he was one of the hottest O's this spring.
Anyway, back to the grind. As always, you can ask any questions.

great scott
one thing i keep reading about hoey is that his fastball, while pretty hard, doesn't have a lot of movement. i believe this is the case w/ aquino, as well. conversely, liz supposedly has crazy movement on his fastball AND it touches the mid 90s.

That 1st inning error...
Isn't he supposed to be a scrappy guy with a glove?
Also,
... COSTANZO!

MelMo happy again!!

Brandon Fahey
Anyone watching todays game?
I just tuned in a few minutes ago and witnessed a BRob two out walk, Mora RBI double and Markickass RBI single. All vs Tavarez and the Red Sox.
I was rooting for Mora to strike out.
Ambers back!
Also interesting: O's have the flu
Oh, and Huff just hit a 2-run HR off of Kyle Snyder, after Millar got on board with an RBI single that chased Tavarez from the game. Old guys bringin their game today.
Man, Roch looks like an asshole
Gary and Buck
Why does L Hernandez keep making errors? I thought his glove was the only reason we were considering starting him at SS.

re:
No. I will not accept that crap ass failed Guillermo Quiroz is "showing good promise." To do what? Backup catch? Any schmoe can do that.
If he's any better than Bako, consider me surprised.

Aquino and Quiroz
Aquino is playing to be the 5th and 6th inning man to get the ball to Walker, Bradford, and Sarfate as well as picking up long relief innings. His past two years have been a mid 4's ERA. If he gives us that, I am all for it. It is much better than the +7 ERA Hoey is going to throw into the mix.
Jim Hoey, the other man in the mix for the spot has proven he can pitch in the minors. But, he has yet to prove he can translate that success in the majors. He is the reliever version of Garrett Olson. No control problems in the minors and shows up at the big league team and forgets what direction the plate is at. I favor Aquino only because Aquino has closed before, and there isn't anyone else to close if Sherrill proves ineffective. I think if Hoey is shoved into that position, it would be disastrous. He puts enough pressure on himself as a middle reliever. Maybe, to hope for the best, Aquino puts up good numbers and gets traded at the deadline.
Besides, only Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, and Chris Ray (just barely), beat Aquino's 4.50 ERA last year. So, he's a better option than anything else we've come up with in the past year.
yes, I fail to see
He put up a 20 home run season in AA in 2003 and got hurt in 2004. Then, followed it up with 3 more injury years. His last year, 2007, he put up modest numbers in AAA. He's still only 26.
What a glowing endorsement. "He had a good season in AA five years ago and then got hurt every single year after."
Quiroz sucks is my only point. "Promise" doesn't apply to anyone hoping to be the backup catcher.
Aquino is playing to be the 5th and 6th inning man to get the ball to Walker, Bradford, and Sarfate
If we're employing a reliever to pitch the fifth and sixth innings to get to Dennis Sarafte, I see some major problems with this pitching staff.
As for his awesome 4.50 ERA last year, he did that IN FOURTEEN INNINGS, DUDE.
I favor Aquino only because Aquino has closed before, and there isn't anyone else to close if Sherrill proves ineffective.
He closed before... four years ago. Briefly. And has been league average at best since then, with about 90 appearances over three years. He sucks. I don't know why some of you have such a problem admitting that these players suck. Ryan Kohlmeier closed once, too.
Why can't Walker close? He did it last year.

oh, and Moore/Costanzo
Also I know you're fairly new so please don't take my argumentative nature as me trying to tell you to F off or anything. I'm digging the ST posts, they're fun conversation. Even if I am pretty much negative across the board on the shitty collection of spring training goofballs.

Aquino
Sarfate I see getting to that setup role because of the cut down in work for Walker and Bradford. They may start the season as the 7th & 8th inning men, but, eventually, it'll be Sarfate in the 8th. He could be a shut down guy.
Walker was 7 for 11 last year in the closing role. His ERA went up over half a point once he took the reigns at the closer position. I think he gets exposed in this situation. His opening numbers look good in save situations:
2.57 ERA, .206 opp. avg., in 10.1 IP.
But, here is where starts to get exposed:
0.75 K/BB, 4 XBH of 7 H, 2 HR, 6 of 10 inherited runners scored.
A closer cannot allow 60% of the runners on base to score when he comes into a game. He has to shut it down. Walker lacks a big strike out pitch and is a pitch to contact type of guy.
I am generally argumentative on the boards. I never take anything seriously or to heart, and I love the spirit of debate. Basically, having someone doubt whatever I write only fuels me to write more, so it's good to have someone to keep you in check. Besides, what good what an opinion be without someone to take the opposite? We're all O's fans here.
bench players
Do you dig any back up players! All back up players suck. I realize some suck more than others but it's hard to find guys who are good enough to start to take a back up role.
Rocky Cherry, O's pitcher, not John C. McGinley's love child.
