Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Rangers sign Sir Fatty

Yup, Ponson has yet another chance to pitch (Sun):

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Sidney Ponson and the Texas Rangers agreed to a minor league contract Sunday.

Ponson last pitched May 12 for the Minnesota Twins, who released him 10 days later. He was 2-5 with a 6.93 ERA in seven starts last season.

The 31-year-old right-hander has won at least 10 games three times in his major league career, including a career-high 17 wins with Baltimore and San Francisco in 2003.

The best part is the dateline is SURPRISE, AZ. Yeaah, that's about right.

Oh man
I HAD to make a comment about this over at MLB Trade Rumors.

I forgot....
that he won 17 games. It hardly seems possible. His ERA was 3.75 that year, so it wasn't entirely luck. Ponson is exhibit #1 in how you can translate one decent year into millions of dollars in MLB.

re:
Ponson had talent. That wasn't imagined. He's just a knucklehead. And a fatso.

Gone but not forgotten...

I'm so Sidexcited I can hardly Sidcontain my Sidself. Til about lunchtime, which is how long it'll take Sid to demonstrate what he's got at the Rangers' camp.

Still, MLB continues so eternally desperate for "proven" pitching that Sid could go north. Stranger things have happened. And if that one does, I'm ready:

In the house pool on no. of ML innings to be thrown in '08 by El Sidster, I was going to stake out 0, but on reflection I think I'll up that to 2/3. He'll never start a game, but they might indeed try -- once -- to do the long man/mop-up thing some April day when they're down 9-1 in the 3rd. Sid will come in, fail to get the side out and leave at 13-1 with two men on. And go pack.

And wait for the next call. It's amazing.

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.
