Get well soon, Doug
You're probably heard that Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis is scheduled for surgery today to have his thyroid removed, stemming from a bout with thyroid cancer.
Davis pitched a "farewell for now" game on Tuesday before heading to the Arizona DL to undergo the surgery and have some time to recover and get well, and he got the win with six innings pitched, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs against the Dodgers. Upon his exist from the game, he was given a long standing ovation in Phoenix, and got well wishes from many of the Dodgers and all of the umpires. It was really quite a scene.
Here's hoping Davis is back as soon as humanly possible. Get well soon, Doug, from all of us at Camden Chat.

fuck cancer.
"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."

Thanks for your sympathies, O's fans.
We've got a thread at the 'Pit that we are planning on printing out and sending to Doug via the Dbacks FO. If you'd like to send him a msg, here's the link: http://www.azsnakepit.com/2008/4/9/391144/doug-davis-get-well-soon-t
Thanks again.

It's not a baseball thing, it's a human one.
Dodgers fans have been there. Braves fans have been there. Red Sox fans have been there. Etc. etc.
We're all on the same side here.
"Yeah, I mean - Cal was much more important to me growing up than Jesus. And frankly, set just as good an example. Loyalty, discipline, hard work, humility, generosity, charity, AND 3,184 career hits. Is JESUS in the 3,000 hit club? I don't think so." - 2632

Damn straight
Last night during the rain delay they were showing Game 2 of the O's-Mariners ALDS and when Eric Davis came up to bat they mentioned he was skipping his weekly chemo treatment to play in the game. Insane.
My best to Doug Davis and his family. I just lost a grandparent to cancer about 1 month ago.

Thyroid cancer is reasonably treatable?
I hope so.
If they had said kidney, stomach, or pancreatic, the outlook would be bad.

His mother and sister are both thyroid cancer survivors.
He's lucky in that it's one of the most treatable, survivable cancers there are. The surgery was to remove his thyroid gland.

He's got a few weeks
of radiation treatment and (hopeful) recovery, now.
