Gameday Thread: O's (6-4) @ Rays (5-5)
Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays, Apr 12, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Daniel Cabrera, RH (0-0, 9.00/2.00) v. Jason Hammel, RH (0-1, 6.00/1.50)
Cabrera's pitched 10 innings in two starts, and walked nine batters. He's also given up 10 earned runs, 11 hits, and four homers. Yup. Any day now...
Game time is 7:10 on MASN. I'm going to duck out around 9 to catch Dawson-Johnson on Showtime, then watch the HBO welterweight card at 10. It's been a few weeks since there's been any notable boxing on in the States; I'm jonesing, and Daniel Cabrera starts tend to be pretty skippable.
Hammel lost a quality start in the sixth inning of his lone start this year, at New York. He's never been particularly good at pitching in the big leagues.
Tonight will be the Major League debut of Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, one of the best prospects in baseball. Willie Aybar went onto the DL. The Rays have been hit extremely hard by injuries, but Longoria is probably already a better player than Aybar.
FUN STATS, ETC.
- Cabrera is 3-0 in five career starts at Tropicana Field. Over 29 1/3 in St. Pete, he's walked 24 and struck out 27, but Tampa Bay batters have hit a paltry .200 against them at their home park. Cabrera is 6-0 lifetime against the Rays despite that crap start last week.
- Carlos Pena is 5-for-13 with two homers and four walks against Cabrera, with a robust 1.423 OPS.
- Longoria hit .307/.403/.528 at Double-A last year (381 AB) and .269/.398/.490 at Triple-A (104 AB).
- Nick Markakis still has zero home runs. What the F, yo?

Never in my wildest dreams
did I ever expect to come to this site and see a picture of not only Venom but also Carnage!
It's as if we went back in time to 1996 and I'm once again a dorky comic book nerd, but y'know...with the Orioles not winning.
nice B. Ro
that's the way to do it

mora, tejada and I THINK Nick...
nearly led the league in GIDPs last year. Those were my favorite.
Don't Hinske and Cabrera have some bad blood from past tiffs?
I seem to remember harsh words/posturing/no actual fighting. Maybe we'll get to see a little excitement out there.

in order to "repeat the process"

Y'know...maybe this is a good idea. Just bust the heat. Fuck it. Stop throwing 92, throw 97 again.

a little criticism for b rob
he's a beast when he leads off an inning and gets to run the bases.
but he SUX at picking up runners on base. he's never focused in those situations.
well
He hits .288/.372/.418 with runners on.
.265/.370/.405 with RISP.
.245/.361/.390 with RISP w/2 out.
.344/.395/.578 with the bases loaded.
.278/.340/.406 with the bases empty.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions
do you?
Because he hits 10 points better with runners on and has an OBP 32 points higher than when the bases are empty.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions
but
the 'runners on' includes bases loaded.
everybody hits better with bases loaded.
take away bases loaded .... not so good.
he gets on base 37% of the time
It's not terrible. At all.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
what the fuck
He's a leadoff hitter that gets on base. Of course he scores more runs than he drives in. Who the shit is he going to drive in? Jay Payton?
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
all im saying
is he lacks focus when he comes up to bat with RISP
clearly this bugs you
but sadly it is true.
well
I was debating with you until you started with Brian Roberts' RBI totals. Now I just think you're out of your gourd and have a vendetta against Roberts.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
yes, that's it!
i have a vendetta against brian roberts!!!
and batting average is meaningless.....
did you guys not see that last pathetic weak at bat with RISP?
stats never tell the whole story.
they tell more of a story than one at-bat
Batting average means a hell of a lot less than OBP.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions
dude i've watched
probably 99% of brobs at bats since he's played with Os.
so i'm not making a judgment based on one at bat.
listen. like i said. i know it's hard for you. but sometimes the truth hurts a little.
I know it's hard to admit
that stats probably say more than your eyes do. I know it's hard for you to accept that Brian Roberts is always going to score more runs than he drives in because he's a leadoff hitter with good hitters behind him and generally bad hitters (7-8-9 on 65 win teams) getting on in front of him. But hey. Batting average. That .370 OBP is TERRIBLE.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
thing is....
batting average with RISP doesn't say anything about whether the bottom of the order gets on because by definition they're on base.
so all the times they're not on base don't count toward the stat.
so --- um --- FAIL.
yes, dude
Fail. That's why his RBI totals are bad.
You know who else blew? Rickey Henderson. That fuckin' guy never drove in more than he scored. Like that year he scored 146 times and only drove in 72. What a piece of crap!
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
dude ... this is where i came in
his RBI totals are bad
(wait for it)
because he ISN'T SO GOOD at HITTING with RISP.
His RBI totals are "bad" (which they really aren't for a leadoff guy on terrible teams) because there's nobody on base.
He still has a .370 OBP with RISP. You know what that does? Puts another guy on base 37% of the time. Means he's not making an out 37% of the time.
And I think at this point I should say that I wasn't serious about you having a vendetta against Roberts, because I'm not trying to be a dick about this or anything. I just quite disagree with a lot of what you're saying. Which is OK.
by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
you're gonna have to do better
than plain RBI and AVG numbers if you wanna get anywhere dude.
they don't tell nearly enough of the story here. how many RBI chances does Roberts have? I guarantee you it is far less than he has chances to score. And AVG is practically meaningless.
by KenDixonFanClub on Apr 12, 2008 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions
also...RBI is a function of who is on base ahead of him
and pray tell who IS on base ahead of him? Nobody, that's who.
by KenDixonFanClub on Apr 12, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
no they don't
the difference between .372/.418 and .370/.405 is probably not statistically significant.

Orioles pitchers have a history of being dirty and hitting Saintly/Virginal Baseball Players
I recall how demonized our team became as Armando Benitez nailed Tino Martinez in the back.
Tino had this Nancy Kerrigan look of "WHYYYYY????? WHYYYYYY?" on his face...
And then Cabs nailed like 10 people last year.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

So....Cabrera's Approach Tonight...
...appeared to be "throw smoke" and, occasionally "throw hard breaking stuff." And it worked. He just kinda went out there and said "hit it if you can find it," and they didn't.
Is he turning a corner with this approach, or is it just more of the same potential that keeps the Os interested?

Well, I certainly prefer it to the usual Daniel Cabrera
But he's going to have to put up a lot more games like this before I'm convinced he doesn't actually suck.
Still, only 3 BBs today. For him, thats huge...
MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC
c'mon, dude.
Are we really going to do this again just because he had one good start?

I am when I'm a little drunk.
Mostly I wanted to know what other folks thought. I agree that it's probably just the usual flash in the pan nonsense.
