Guess who just got back today?
That wild-eyed boy that had been away.

Beej was ridiculously dominant in his first season as the big-money Jays closer, then appeared in just five games last season. He was activated from the DL on Sunday and pitched the 10th inning of a Jays win at Texas, picking up the save.
Man, I still think that cat is great.

wow, he looks totally different
like he lost a ton of weight or something.
maybe it's just the lack of a goatee.

I'm still a big fan, too
I can never hate him. What a monster he was for that two-year stretch of 2005-2006.

Yeah, he was awesome
And we could've resigned him prior to the 2005 season for a lot less than he got from Toronto, but Petey and co. lowballed him. Granted, we don't have much need for a money closer now...but imagine what we could've gotten for him in trade.
And man. We got him for Juan Guzman. Juan Frickin' Guzman!?

interesting enough
If we signed him to deal we offered (it was 3 years I believe), he would be a free agent at the end of the season. I hate to say it but I'm glad we passed. He'll probably need an adjustment season from TJ. Out of those three years, we would probably only received one season worth the money he makes.
btw, people are coming back from TJ surgery super fast these days.

The offer on the table to Ryan was 3 years, $19 million.

I recall
that he wanted something like 3 years, $24 million, nowhere near the $7 mil he got from Toronto, and we just wouldn't go that far.
My point, though, was not what kind of use we'd get out of him as a pitcher, but what we could've gotten for him in a trade if he was still in the stable now. Or, for that matter, if we'd traded him before he walked. But Lord knows, we couldn't f'ing trade anyone back then.

trade value

it's hard to say. If we had signed him to the 3 year, 19 million dollar deal, he would be a free agent at the end season. Thus he could be 2-3 month pick up for a contender come June or July. If he shows he's healthy in June or July and can pitch consecutive days, he'd some trade value especially if we could pick up some of his salary. In any case, it's a loss in terms of trade value but a not a huge one.

I was just stoked on the Thin Lizzy ref
Yeah, what a cock-up not resigning B.J. was, even with last year's injury woes.
And I'd still keep him on this team.

other side of the coin, in a sense...
our buddy eric o'flaherty's line from yesterday:
2.2ip/8h/6er/1hr
the amazing thing is that his era was 20.25 BEFORE yesterday and yesterday's outing maintained that era perfectly.
