"O"ly Planet: Chicago
In following up on a conversation I had at the NYC is Birdland meetup last night, I'm posting the first in what could be an ongoing, off-topic, but Oriolecentric CC Travel series: "O"ly Planet. The first edition will be Chicago, Illinois - The Windy City, for no other reason than that I'm visiting there next week on bid-ness.
Unlike, Lonely Planet, "O"ly Planet should only be comprised of advice and recommendations from people who have actually been to the destination in question and preferably have a decent knowledge thereof. So if you've been to, or, even better, lived in Chicago feel free to give your recs on good food, neighborhoods, bars, activities etc. in the Windy City.

I had a very significant life event occur in Chicago
But it was during a high school trip back in the early ‘90s, and I didn’t get to see much of the city, so I’m not sure I can offer any help. So…uh….disregard this post :-)

Do you like sushi?
My brother lives in Chicago, and there is a totally awesome sushi place that he takes me to whenever I go there. I can’t remember the name, though. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll get it from him. I can also get some other good restaurant recs from him as well.
I’ll also be there in June for the O’s-Cubs Series.

Recs from my bro
Excellent sushi spot is Coast. It’s on N. Damen just north of Armitage in Bucktown. Used to be a bit of a hole in the wall but a few years ago it was featured in Chicago magazine (much to my brother’s chagrin) and now reservations are pretty much required. Also, it’s BYOB.
Great dinner spot is Tavern on Rush in the Gold Coast neighborhood. Good food and atmosphere and oustanding martinis (my brother loves martinis). He says a great place to take people visiting Chicago, though he’s never taken me there.
Nice neighborhood bar to get a great beer: Hopleaf. Located in Andersonville (that’s where my brother lives) on N. Clark St just south of Foster. Huge beer selection including a lot of Belgium beers that you won’t see a lot of places.
Personally, when I’m there, I like to go to Michigan Ave. and pretend I have money for all of the fancy stores. If my brother were here he’d tell you that Chicago has more square feet of retail space than any other city in America. He was a manager at the Gap on Michigan Ave for quite some time until he got a promotion and shipped out to the suburbs.

MICHIGAN AVE
That’s my train stop, yo. Last time I was in the city, a homeless man approached myself and a female friend, scaring her half to death but forcing me to try not to laugh. He was just very drunk and very funny. He said things like “all of the dick,” causing a DePaul student nearby to break down laughing. She had decided to tell him we were engaged, then he wept over a lack of turkey at his Thanksgiving. His advice, and I quote, “Fuck ya brother. Fuck ya sister. But ya mother and father—you gotta respeck ‘em.”
And I thought that was pretty cool. I gave him a big hug and ten bucks. Chicago homeless aren’t as inventive and friendly as Detroit homeless, but I like to talk to them. Uncle Nubby in Detroit has told me many a tale.
Chicago always amazes me because you can go into that fuckin’ media store there that’s owned by FYE and find a lot of people still willing to pay $28.99 for a new copy of, I dunno, 3:10 to Yuma. Jesus go to Best Buy you weirdos. Save 15 bucks.

Um, go see a game at Wrigley?
Been in Chicago once, and it was to see a Cubbies game. And yeah, with my wife’s family in western Illinois, they are officially “the Cubbies.”

Great idea.
You should make an “O”ly Planet tag for this and future diaries. Then it will be easy to find them all. And maybe tag each diary with the name of the travel destination as well….

I lived in Chicago for 3.5 years
Moved back to Bmore 3 weeks ago and am just hanging out and traveling for a few months before starting grad school in DC at the end of July.
Anyway, I have a bunch of recommendations for Chicago. I’ll just post a few for now. I can’t recommend anything as glorious as a Faidley’s crabcake, but there’s still some good stuff. Metromix.com is a great resource with more details.
My favorite restaurant is Nacional 27, in the River North neighborhood (I forget the exact intersection). The 27 stands for the number of Latin cuisines the food represents. A bit pricey but definitely worth it. Also great drinks and live music a couple nights a week. They clear out the center for salsa dancing on Saturday nights.
My favorite bar is a place a few blocks east called Blue Frog (Lasalle and Huron). It is a hole in the wall that does karaoke most nights. The crowd gets very fired up, so you see lots of crazy drunk singing and dancing. It helps to be drunk before you get there.
As Stacey mentioned, the Gold Coast area is pretty touristy but still a good time, esp around Rush Street. It is also known as the VT, or Viagra Triangle, because Rush and State Streets form a little triangle shaped park, and the bars around there are notorious for rich old men hitting on pretty young things. In that area, I am a fan of Whiskey Bar and Luxbar.
The Hangge Uppe is on Elm just west of State. It is one of the places where the drunker you are, the more fun it is. The basement is all 80s music and mainstream old rock songs like AC/DC where people go nutty (lots of bachelorette parties). A pretty long line forms early on the weekends.
Piece is in Bucktown (North and Damen) and has great New Haven-style pizza (yes, there is such a thing) and pretty good microbrews. They don’t take reservations, so either go early for dinner or expect to wait a long time.
I used to live right by Second City, which is a famous comedy theater on North and Wells (Old Town neighborhood). It’s like triple A for SNL and other big-time comedy gigs. Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, Chris Farley, etc did stints there. Adobo Grill is right next door and serves the best guacamole I’ve ever had (they make it in front of you). Great for a pre or post-show meal.
If you want late night drunk food, the most notorious place is Wiener Circle in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, on Clark a block or two south of Diversey. You can get a true Chicago hot dog there and deathly greasy cheese fries. A female ex-con supposedly started it in one of the whitest parts of town (one of the things that really bothered me about Chicago is how segregated it is- the North side is virtually all white and middle-upper class). She hires mostly ex-cons, and the whole appeal of the place is that the workers hurl insults where nothing is out of bounds. Of course, all the drunk fools yell shit back, and it can get pretty vulgar and entertaining. The most memorable thing you can do is order a chocolate milkshake from a female worker. She’ll pull down her shirt and squeeze her tittes for you.
If you plan to see a baseball game, there ain’t a damn thing to do around the Cell. The exact opposite is true of Wrigley. There are bars all around the stadium, esp on Clark Street. Even when there’s no game, Clark Street is packed on weekend nights with mostly people a few yeras out of college, if that’s your thing. Take the red line on the El to get to both (Sox-35th and Addison stops respectively).
Finally, Millenium Park is very touristy, but you have to go and see the now-famous Bean sculpture. Bring your camera and amuse yourself endlessly.

P.S.
Always try to fly in and out of Midway. The airport is much less crowded and newer and nicer. O’Hare starts seeing delays after a drop of rain, much less snow, ice, thunderstorms, etc.

an opposite view, though
The Wiener Circle is retarded.
