Gameday Thread: Blue Jays (7-6) @ O's (8-5)

Toronto Blue Jays @ Baltimore Orioles

Shaun Marcum, RH (1-0, 2.57/0.79) v. Steve Trachsel, RH (1-1, 3.00/1.25)

Game time is 7:05 on MASN2.

Trachsel has pitched 12 innings this season, walking six and striking out three. He is a complete mystery to me at this point. How he skirts by with numbers like that is puzzling. It shouldn't happen. It CAN'T happen. God, is he wily.

Shaun Marcum is 26, doesn't have overpowering stuff, but has good command and could grow up to be a one of those control freaks that sticks around until he's 100 years old. He could grow up to be Steve Trachsel, I guess.

But this a very serious question. Shaun Marcum...or John Corbett in disguise?

You make the call.

FUN STATS, ETC.

  • Trax has been quite successful in his career against Toronto, going 6-0 in seven starts with a 3.12 ERA.
  • Adam Jones is 7-for-21 this season at Camden Yards. He's 4-for-20 on the road.
  • We have eight wins. George Sherrill has six saves. Pull on the collar of your shirt and go, "Nyeee nyeee nyeee!"
  • Melvin Mora has 15 career homers against the Jays. The only team he's hit more dingers against is Tampa Bay (24).

Enjoy the f-ing game...

I’ll be accompanying my wife and two of her friends that somehow got invited to watch the Oklahoma RedHawks face off against the Round Rock Express. Round Rock will be “led” by Chad Reineke (0-1, 16.20) while Doug Mathis (2-0, 2.57) takes the mound for Oklahoma.

There are a couple of guys I’m excited to see though…that is if I actually get to watch any of the game. HOLY SHIT…I just realized Sir Sidney is on the Oklahoma Redhawks roster. Money! Imma gonna have to go more often. Saltalamacchia is on the club and then there is this goofy ass guy.

J.R. House, Tim Byrdak, and Mike DeJean are on Round Rock’s team…gawd..everyone is a former Oriole.

I've got two nickels and a paradigm. - RWH

We don't do enough over/under stuff here

If my memory serves me right we didn’t do an over/under for the season, in terms of wins, did we? Although thinking about it, it may be unrealistic for all of us to pick the winner and the score for 162 games.

I might just make an over/under thread after the game though seeing if people will still venture to say that the O’s will win less than 75.

by Baltimo on Apr 15, 2008 7:05 PM EDT   0 recs

why wouldn't they?

The 2005 O’s started 17-7. They went 74-88.

woo hoo

Buck compliments Payton for hard work off the bench. Yippy, he’s hitting .211.

God

It boggles the mind how much commentators overrate David Eckstein. He’s not even a bad player. But you’d think he was an MVP candidate every year.

oh what the fuck, Melvin

Ground ball to third, Melvin looks to the plate and they only get one out instead of two. Jesus Christ. What kind of little league shit is that, Mr. Playoffs?

GUNNED

Razor catches Rios, inning over.

by SC on Apr 15, 2008 7:19 PM EDT   0 recs

you gotta be pretty bad at baseball to have trachsel strike you out

foul out or fly out, maybe… strike out though?

recent O's quotes

“Andy brought up some statistics at our organizational meetings last winter. Five of the eight teams in 2007’s postseason were at the top of the chart in on-base percentage, in working the count and in pitches seen.”
—Orioles manager Dave Trembley, on the new identity of his Orioles.

“We’ve tried to put an emphasis on that. Add situational hitting-making productive outs, moving runners, getting guys in from third base, being able to bunt, being about to hit-and-run, being able to hit with two strikes.”
-Trembley

“Melvin Mora puts it best. He says, ‘It’s just like they tell you on the airplane. At first you have to put the mask on yourself and then help your children.’”
—Orioles president Andy MacPhail, on Mora’s leadership

by SC on Apr 15, 2008 7:42 PM EDT   0 recs

“Gzzzzz…......Hunh…WHAT? WHAssat?
Did someone say something? I was asleep in the coat closet.”

Nice one Luke!

Marcum has a nice ERA. Let’s destroy it.

by Y Not on Apr 15, 2008 7:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Luke is hitting better than Tejada

this season right?

ps Payton doesn’t deserve to play

At first I was pissed at Payton replacing Luke

But then I realized he was essentially replacing Huff and I didn’t feel so bad.

he had two strikes

With a guy on second and no one out you have to put that thing in play. Kids are taught in Pony League to swing at close pitches with two strikes. It was a good pitch. Payton’s a bad hitter.

hitters count

but i’m sure you know that, Adam

by Bromo on Apr 15, 2008 7:47 PM EDT   0 recs

a bunch lineup would really fit this team

Roberts
Markakis
Scott
then the rest of the bums

Try to maximize what you can get out of those three.

Why is Marcum

doing an Adam Loewen impression?

I missed Amber

I get Jackie Robinson Day, and I think it’s just super, but whole teams wearing the number strikes me as insincere overly PC.

by SC on Apr 15, 2008 7:52 PM EDT   0 recs

there is an extremely valid point I'd really like

to make about this, but I do NOT want to get into a heated debate here, but i do think it’s overly PC

Eh, the whole concept of "PC" is ridiculous

Let the black players who have looked up to the first black major leaguer wear the number. The rest should wear their numbers and stop pretending its solidarity.

great, a leadoff walk

To GREGG ZAUN. On four straight pitches.

You’re killin’ me, Trax.

by SC on Apr 15, 2008 7:53 PM EDT   0 recs

He's wiley!

He’s already struck out one, so he needs to walk a few to make up for it.

by Stacey on Apr 15, 2008 7:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Zaun

is the type of batter you need to pitch around. Dempsey taught him how to hit

I think that mlb gameday just froze and then I realize it’s Trax pitching and he just takes that long between pitches.
