Bedard down for 15
Erik on the DL for a hip issue, the trade this winter has just became even better then it already was!
"Erik Bedard, the Mariners' No. 1 starter who has had two starts pushed back because of left hip inflammation, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday"
"We have said consistently that we were not going to rush Erik back," Mariners manager John McLaren"

as much as i want Erik to succed
it’s good that we were able to pull the trigger on this

The timing is looking as good
as the Miggy trade, in retrospect.

Ouch
This post by a doctor looks at a pretty bad possible scenario.

I know the consensus here was to make the Bedard deal but weren’t there at least a few naysayers out there who wanted to hold onto him? :-)
Oh wow....
If it’s really the onset of a degenerative hip….then all M’s fans have my sincerest condolences.
(and my thanks, too…for what we got for him at the right possible time)

I really do hope this isn’t the worst case scenario laid out in this article. But without access to the medical tests (which we as fans shouldn’t have), we’re just making wild-ass guesses, no matter the academic degrees we hold.

This naysayer...
...didn’t want to hold onto him per se, but did want more out of the deal. If he ends up with a legitimate health problem then, sure, the trade will look prescient – but there was no way of knowing this.
so?
look, we know he had some health problems in the past. this was certainly a contributing factor for wanting to trade the guy. but, obviously, if a player has checked out with a doctor as to being in good health – as Bedard had – there is no way of knowing if, when or where he’ll be injured again.
"there was no way of knowing this"
One can always speculate given a player’s injury history what things might pop up. You know as well as I do that passing a physical does not mean someone is in perfect health or anything close to it. The fact is the Mariners took a calculated risk in adding Bedard. Yes, he’s very good, but he’s also a yearly injury case. There were reasons of ways to suspect - though not KNOW, I agree - that he’d already be on the disabled list, and the hip thing is what it is. It’s something that’s given him trouble before, and when a professional athlete in his 20s is having trouble with his hip, that’s really not good news in any way.
I hope it’s not a degenerative condition, because I don’t wish something like that on anyone. OK, maybe Skip Bayless.

gratuitous piling on
That same naysayer predicted a Johan Sanata in his prime sort of year.
All I can say is “phew”.
re:
If memory serves, I predicted solid numbers for Bedard – in line with last year’s – but with predictable time off for injury. Although I’m having trouble finding the thread to see what it was exactly.
Did you ever even end up projecting anything?
I was extremely for this trade, but assuming he does have a degenerative hip condition you can’t say that was really predictable. He did have a physical and he did pass it, so at the time you had to assume that he was relatively healthy (even if he wasn’t). He did have injury issues so various stints on the DL was forseeable.

Bedard did pass his physical...
I do like the guy and I hope this is nothing serious, but if the problem has become quite painful and inflammed over a relatively short period of time, wouldn’t you think something would have shown up during his physical? This is not a condition that occurs overnight.
something might have shown up
And the Mariners might have decided it wasn’t a huge deal. They don’t just go around making these physicals public.

Does this hurt our chances moving millar or roberts?
If this hip does prove to be bad, then who’s gonna give us 4 or 5 players or part with descent prospects? People are gonna cry FLEECE.
I hope Bedard gets better soon.
Bedard took a physical prior to the trade. The Mariners accepted those results, whatever they were.

Plus
it’s not like the Mariners or Astros didn’t have plenty of time to fully vette both Tejada and Bedard. These deal were seemingly interminable at the time. If they didn’t do their homework it’s their own fault.
So
Is there any chance we can get AJ and Sherrill back? Just so happens we have no closer or right fielder…or Bedard.
Hey, you had your shot at Corey Patterson
