Baltimore salaries
I would be interested to know what all the orioles are making this season. If you could include salaries we are on the hook for (Gibbons) then that is great. The SI site salaries do not look up to date (Is Traschel really making 3 mil this season?)
The reason is I wanted to compare the production of players versus their salaries and guage the health of the team this year versus last year.
Even a link would be awesome.

wow
That is such a comprehensive site, it had everything, it is most certainly an awesome link.
And Trashman is only making $1.5 million according to that site, he made $3 million last year.

And that goes for you too, Ramon...

2010
The Orioles have no one under contract for 2010, so the roster is virtually guaranteed to look extremely different then.
These 8 players should be in their arbitration years:
Scott
Jones (if he qualifies as a Super 2)
Markakis
Cabrera
Loewen
Guthrie
Sherrill
Ray
I’m projecting those 8 guys to make ~$35MM in 2010, although that depends on what these guys do over the next two years.
The good news is that if say, Cabrera, continues to stink, the Orioles can just non-tender him rather than pay him $6MM or so to suck in 2010. So the Orioles probably won’t be forced to pay any of these guys much more than they are worth.
If, by some miracle, Burres or Fahey stay in the majors continuously for the next two years, they will also be arbitration eligible.
Sarfate, Bierd, Albers, Moore, and Louie cannot be eligible for arbitration in 2010, so they will make close to the minimum (if they are still in the majors).
The other 17 spots on the roster need to be filled from the guys listed above, the minor leagues and free agent signings.
Oh, and the Orioles will owe Melvin Mora and Ramon Hernandez a million bucks apiece to buy out their 2010 options.
Still, there’s going to be a lot of payroll room for free agents.
Danys Baez, $6,333,333 (2007-09). B-a-a-a-a-rfff.

We have a tendancy to pay a lot for players who suck
This is not good. What we need is to have lower base salaries and more generous performance incentives.
We need to be able to say to a player, “Sure, the Yankees will pay you $6 million next year, but if you sign with us, and you have a great year, you could make $12 million. Of course, if you suck, you will only make $3 million. “

Here's a question....
Is there any conceivable reason on earth for the O’s to make a run for Mark Texiera this offseason?
Clearly he’d cost at least 15MM per year, and it would go against the whole plan of rebuilding the team young talent.
But he’s repeatedly said he wants to play here, and Texiera as our cleanup with Markakis, Jones, Scott, and eventually Wieters hitting around him would look really damn good.
Discuss.
If they sign him to 5+ years
Then it’s a great idea. He’s still young enough to project that he’ll be good when the rebuilding is done. And SOMEONE has to play 1B even next year.
yeah
I mean, in all honesty, who’s he going to block? Chris Vinyard? Brandon Snyder? I like Snyder, but his chances are, erm, less than good. Vinyard is a DH who doesn’t H well enough for you to D him in the majors. Except maybe FA.

As a local boy, he'd also immediately become the face of the franchise
and Baltimore loves its local boys.
Really, the only reason not to sign him would be if we’re somehow able to get a stud 1B prospect for Sherrill or Bri-Bob (I’m not nearly deluded enough to think we could get a stud 1B for Huff, Mora, or Millar)
well there are other reasons
Or, rather, there potentially could be.
Other than that, though, no.

Don't they project Rowell as a 1B?
But he’s still at Frederick, anyway. If he and Tex are both hitting, they’d have time to figure a way to fit ‘em both in the lineup.
Why the Hell Not?
Even if Rowell goes over to 1B, which is not for sure but seems probable, Tex can DH. Or Rowell can.

One thing, though....
Rowell hasn’t exactly been tearing it up in single A (a .761 OPS in 91 games last year).
There’s a chance he could be more Octavio Martinez (who destroyed pitching in his first year of the minors and then fell off the face of the earth) than Edgar Martinez.
Thanks for the link stacy
