Planning my summer trip

I'm taking my wife to visit family in PA this summer (July 2nd - 8th) and we are going to be in town for the BAL / KC games on the 2nd and 3rd.  We'll drive on to PA the next morning but we will have a couple of days in town.  I need a little help...I hate being a tourist and doing the normal tourist-y things.  So, I'm open to any and all suggestions...especially accomodations (relativlely close to the ballpark), bars, restaurants, and things to do during the day.  We will be back in town on the 7th and leave the evening of the 8th.  So we basically have half a day on the 2nd, all day the 3rd, and half a day on the 8th.

Thanks.

"O"ly Planet: Baltimore

I don’t really know much about hotels except that there are a number of them within walking distance of Camden Yards. I know there is a relatively new Hampton Inn (opened last summer) across the street from Camden Yards next to Pickles Pub that looks pretty nice when I walk by it, and a friend stayed there last summer and had no complaints.

I know you said you’re not interested in touristy stuff, but if you haven’t been to Fort McHenry I think it’s worth it. Lots of history, lovely views of the water. Another sorta touristy thing to do is go to the top of Federal Hill (south of the Inner Harbor). A beautiful view of the city and more good history.

For something to do during the day, I might recommend walking to the Inner Harbor and taking the water taxi over to Fell’s Point. It’s a lovely way to see the city without being as touristy as the Ducks. We usually take the taxi over to Fells at least once a summer just because it’s nice. Once you’re in Fells, there are a number of little shops to check out, but mostly bars and restaurants. A very nice place to eat where you won’t see tourists is Peter’s Inn on S. Ann Street. My favorite bars over there are Max’s and The Wharf Rat. There’s also a Wharf Rat on Pratt Street near Camden but I much prefer the Fell’s Point location.

For seafood, a lot of people will recommend Faidley’s in Lexington Market, and rightly so. The food there is awesome, and the atmosphere is unique. But for steamed crabs and cold beer on a warm summer evening, to me nothing beats LP Steamers on Fort Ave in Locust Point. You can sit on rooftop deck and enjoy the breeze and the view (as long as it isn’t 100 degrees) or stay inside and interact with some true Baltimoreans. I’d only recommend going there for crabs, though. The rest of their seafood is just average.

Like Pete said, Blue Moon Cafe is a good place for breakfast, it’s also in Fells Point. Another good breakfast place is Miss Shirley’s Cafe in Roland Park. It’s on Cold Spring Lane and I think quite Baltimore.

I’ll think of some more stuff later, though I’m sure you’ll get plenty of suggestions.

What kind of stuff are you interested in?

Food ideas…

If you like milling around real food markets (as opposed to touristy eatery markets) then Lexington Market is a must. I’ve loved going there since I was a kid. Stop at Faidley’s for the raw bar. Once in Lexington Market, also stop at Bergers for at least a pound of their cookies. Rheb’s candy is a Baltimore tradition, as is a Polock Johnnys sausage with the works. They are all in the Market along with most anything else you want to eat.

Anyone know a good Pit Beef place close by? Good pit beef is good eats.

Will you have any kids in tow? Or more interested in sights/history? The B&O Railroad Museum is always interesting, as is Fort McHenry.

I second

Peter’s Inn – remarkably good food for what looks like just a regular neighborhood bar. The photos in the Men’s bathroom are not for the faint of heart however. Fells Point is also a nice area to check out. I have spent an inordinate amount of time in The Wharf Rat – Fells Point as two of my closest friends used to work there. And while I can’t really recommend their beer or food, it’s an interesting bar to check out in that it’s probably the oldest bar in Baltimore – the building dates from the 18th Century. I would suggest either Friend’s on Aliceanna Street (pronounced Alizan in Baltimore) or Duda’s on Thames & Bond Streets for Fells Point Bars – both have a good beer selection and good food.

wow.

A day that starts with breakfast at Blue Moon, continues with some walking at Ft. McHenry & the Inner Harbor leading up to lunch at Faidley’s before the Orioles game, followed by some brews at the Rat & dinner at LP Steamers…

That’s like my perfect day. Mix a little sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll in there & it’s like nirvana.

Go to Paper Moon

good diner. I forget the address. I haven’t been there in years though. The 28 year old me might hate it.

I'm 29

And I still go there. I haven’t been there at 3 a.m. in awhile, so that might keep me tolerant of the place.

It’s on W. 29th Street, though I don’t know the address. About a block west of Howard Street.

when I was in college

I was in Baltimore basically every other weekend and I’d ALWAYS end up there drunk after a show at the Ottobar or a night running around town. I have a feeling I wouldn’t be too keen on the food now….

actually I could go for a good omelette.

Ummmm

it’s okay when you’re a drunk 22 year old coming home from a bar – but it’s not a place you take your wife, if you want my two cents.

by Jonny Pops on Apr 19, 2008 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

During the daytime hours (especially Saturday and Sunday mornings/early afternoon) it has a family atmosphere. College kids, yeah, but also families and babies and all sorts of random people. Whenever my niece stays with me she always wants to go there.

Ehhh

I’ve gone – the food is okay – but I wouldn’t go again unless I had to, i.e. late night. And the place is decked out like Cheech & Chong’s little woodland hideaway, which is why I think it’s better for a younger crowd.

Background

I’m 27…into the history though…we’re making our way through Amish country and Gettysburg on the way back into town. The B&O sounds great. We’re more into laid back pubs and out of the way places instead of dance clubs and all that jazz. How is the national aquarium?

My only hope is that B-Rob is still on the team when we arrive or I’ll never hear the end of it. He must be all that makes the game enjoyable for my wife. Honestly, I don’t care though…so long as it frees me up to enjoy the games.

The Aquarium

is pretty impressive. I never really realized that growing up since it was always right there for field trips and such, but after going to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago I realized how special it really is. It’s not really my scene just because it doesn’t really fit my interests, but it’s quite nice. My sister and her family get a season pass every year they like it so much.

Another place I just thought of (though it may bore your wife) is both the Maryland Sports Legends Museum and the Babe Ruth Museum. Sports Legends is right next to Camden Yards. I went through it last summer and it’s a little bit of heaven for O’s fans. Orioles history back to the very beginning, plus a lot of other local Maryland sports. I haven’t been to the Babe Ruth since I was a teenager but it’s actually in the house where he was born and pretty much in the same neighborhood as Camden Yards.

Babe Ruth

I think the Babe Ruth Museum is definitely on our list. The aquarium isn’t really up my alley either but I hate to be right there and never go.

I love the Baltimore Aquarium

I’ve been to aquariums in several different cities/countries, and I’ve found Baltimore’s to be the best.

hotel

if your looking for a great place to stay close to the park you gotta stay at the holiday inn inner harbor. i stayed there for opening day, less than an half mile walk to both the inner harbor and camden..really nice hotel, not tooooo expensive i think it was about 160 a night, but for the location you cant beat it. check it out.

Annapolis

is a nice town to visit. State capital, down by the water, Naval Academy, old-timey, yadda yadda. Maybe on your last half-day you should go there.

"O"ly Planet: Baltimore

Okay here goes -

For a hotel near the ballpark the closest is the Sheraton which is just down the way, toward the harbor. The Holiday Inn is also nearby, as is the Hyatt, on the Harbor, and another on the Harbor. I would go for the Sheraton or Hyatt.

Restaurants – Faidley’s Crabcakes in Lexington Market are a must. Get the Lump – not the backfin – the Lump, you’ll be very happy you did. The whole environment in Lexington Market is entertaining. It is as real as Baltimore gets right there, no mall scene kinda thing. A nice area to hit not too far from the ballpark is Federal Hill. There’s a whole bar & restaurant scene around the Cross Street Market over there that’s worth checking out – as is the Market itself when it’s open (which I believe is Mon-Sat, 9-6 as are all the City Markets, including Lexington). You can get a decent cheesesteak down there at MaGerks along with a beer and conversation. Bicycle is a decent restaurant for something more of a real going out to dinner kinda thing. A MUST for dessert is Vaccaro’s in Little Italy on the other side of the Inner Harbor from the Ballpark – their Cannoli are the best I’ve ever had, anywhere. Honestly there are a ton of places I could point you to – if you give me a little more idea of what kinda food you like I can narrow it down some.

For things to do, walking around the Harbor is always fun for people from out of town. I recommend just going up to the top of Federal Hill in the park and looking out over the harbor and the city. While over there, there’s a very interesting, offbeat museum called the American Visionary Art Museum which displays some pretty wild and interesting stuff – all “outsider art” meaning nothing from the traditional art establishment and entirely comprised of work by self taught artists. Again I could go on and on – if you have anything in particular you’re looking for just give me a holler here and I’ll try and steer you that way.
