Catcher John Marzano dies at 45
Philadelphia native, former Olympian, ex-big league catcher, and MLB.com host John Marzano passed away at the age of 45 following a heart attack.
Marzano was born in Philly, went to high school in Philly, played his college ball at Temple, and lived in Philly at the time of his death. He was drafted in 1984 by the Red Sox, and also played in Seattle and Texas.
After his playing career, which ended after the 1999 season, he became a TV and radio personality for the Phillies, and had recently been working for MLB.com.
MLB posted a tribute video for Marzano today.
Maybe the most memorable moment of his professional playing career occured when he was a Mariner, in 1996. After Paul O'Neill complained about a pitch being high and inside, Marzano took a swing at him. He had been a favorite in Seattle starting with that moment.
