Minor League Roundup: April 20
Durham @ Norfolk, PPD/Rain
The Tides and Bulls will play a double-header today, starting at 6:15. I might listen on internet radio. Woo! I also might not. Woo! Woo woo!
Akron 5, Bowie 1 -- 3 innings/Susp./Rain
Things are not going well in Bowie! Chorye Spoone got tagged (2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 R, 4 ER) and Nolan Reimold is 0-for-1.
Winston-Salem 3, Frederick 2
Wieters Watch! He DH'd, and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. The guy is manhandling advanced A-ball.
Brandon Snyder (1-for-4, 2 K, .228/.274/.263) is still not. And Billy Rowell has yet to get back into the lineup. Miguel Abreu was 2-for-4 for Frederick, and Brad Bergesen took the loss as the starter despite an OK day (6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K). Couple of Warthog homers did him in.
Delmarva 7, Lakewood 2
Lakewood managed just three hits, while the Shorebirds rapped out 11.
Delmarva got two-hit days from Tyler Henson, Anthony Martinez, Matthew Tucker and Brendan Monaghan. Henson hit a solo homer in the first inning, and had three RBI on the day. The homer was his second of the year.
On the mound, John Mariotti threw seven innings of one-hit, shutout ball, walking just one and striking out seven. Sean Gleason gave up two in two innings of relief. Should've been Jerry Don Gleaton. Or Sheriff Buford T. Justice. You sumbitch.

Between him, Markakis and Jones
that’s 3 of the 8 wee need for a lineup. We need the other 5 before I get excited. And don’t count B-Rob, cause he won’t be here by the time Wieters is.

C: Matt Wieters
1B: Billy Rowell, if he can make it (Snyder probably won’t - Rowell could also play 3B)
2B: Brian Roberts, who I will believe is traded when I see it, seriously
3B: There are ways to get third basemen, or Scott Moore or Mike Costanzo could turn out to be a PUML (Perfectly Useful Major Leaguer)
SS: Fuck the heck knows, man
LF: Luke Scott, who is only 30 and could have plenty of time left as an effective hitter (assuming he keeps hitting over a full season, and nothing in his numbers, ever, tells me he won’t - Houston bonered on this guy)
CF: Adam Jones
RF: Nick Markakis
DH: could be Scott, could be Nolan Reimold, although Reimold can’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag in a phone booth next to the broad side of a barn right now
Here’s the other thing, though. Assuming Markakis, Jones, Wieters pans out, and maybe another guy (Rowell, Moore, Costanzo, Reimold, Scott and/or Roberts stay in B’more, whatever), they’ll go out and get free agents that can play, and they’ll already have a core locked up to base them around, instead of launching sacks of cash from t-shirt cannons at Tejada, Lopez and Palmeiro, or trading for Sammy Sosa, or not noticing that no one else is showing much interest in Jay Payton or Aubrey Huff.

My focus is 2010
So,
C Wieters
1B ?? – Who among those in our system do we see as a better than 50% chance to be here in 2010?
2B ?? – It won’t be Roberts in 2 seasons
SS ???? – You have to have SOMEONE, and I sure hope it still ain’t Brandon Fahey by then.
3B Moore? I could see him being a PUML kinda guy. And I’m OK with that.
LF Scott turning 30 kinda scares me – is he going to be able to help us when he’s 32?
CF Jones, barring injury, is the manfor the next 10 years
LF Markakis, barring injury, is DA MAN
That’s about 50% of the lineup we’ll need to fill with FA by 2010, or at least 25% if we’re accepting Moore and Rowell as PUML types.
It’s more encouraging than it’s been for a wehile, but MacPhail still has some work to do.

Millar

Again, I’ll believe it when I see it.
LF Scott turning 30 kinda scares me – is he going to be able to help us when he’s 32?
There’s really no reason he can’t.

WIETERS
Wieters is incredible. I sincerely believe he will start for us next year. If he and Rowell can both pan out, we could have a really solid lineup.

Wieters
He better start for us next year and prob by the end of this year
They need to get him out of single A sooner rather than later

He’s been in pro baseball for all of a few weeks. He’ll be in Bowie soon enough.
