I do think we've entered a new D-Cab era
The one thing that still makes me cautious is his temper when things go against him. The guy can get really riled up sometimes, which then causes him to do stupid shit like balk with a runner on third. Or throw behind Pedroia’s head just because he’s getting shelled.
For those who missed it, Aubrey Huff is still a worthless piece of crap. He was on second and Jones was on first with no outs in the fifth. Ramon crushes a ball that hits the left field fence, and Huff decides to hang around second base holding his dick (probably masturbating as he described on Bubba the Love Sponge’s show) til the ball lands. He gets thrown out at the plate. Jones, who was right behind Huff, has to retreat to second, and Ramon, who was nearly at second, had to retreat to first. In sum, when you crush a ball to the wall with men on first and second an no outs, the minimum outcome should be one man scoring with men on second and third. Instead, we get zero runs and men on first and second with no outs.

How?!
How does the site go down on the day that Cabrera goes 8 innings giving up 2 earned on 5 hits, with 5 strike outs and no walks? No wild pitches? 95 pitches thrown, 65 for strikes? That’s just crazy talk!
Could this be real or is he just teasing us?

Daniel Cabrera is Birdland
This was a hell of a night for this site to be down. I had to watch Danny’s dominance all by my lonesome.
I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I just can’t help it. Danny looks totally different lately. I’m totally backing zk in the Cabrera Bowl.
Over at Orioles Hangout (gotta do something when this site is down!) someone posted that Cabrera hasn’t had 3 straight starts with at least 6 IP and 2 ER or less since 2004. Woo fa.

2004 sounds about right.
I was thinking he hasn’t had a stretch like this in years. Which isn’t hard to believe, given that he’s been progressively worse every year he’s been in the majors.
Cabrera has the rare stuff that if – IF – he has control, he’s unhittable. An ace in every sense of the word. But he rarely has control.
I am encouraged – I’ve been all for trading his a$$. But it’s going to take more than 3 starts for me. I’d like to see a good half-dozen before I think about getting back on the bandwagon.

Nope.
I gotta go with “no” on the hope thing. A couple glimpses of Good Danny in April doesn’t do it for me any more. Good Danny is just the unlucky twin of Bad Danny, who shows up the minute this guy gets knocked off track. He just didn’t get knocked off track tonight is all.
Great game tho’.

He kind of did, though, tonight...
I mean with the shoddy defensive he could’ve packed it in a few times but he battled. I believe there was one situation where he had the basesloaded and NO outs, but only gave up one run… and that came on an RBI ground out. Definitely a different Danny. This guy is a GAMER.

“That probably turned the game around,” Trembley said. “I’ve used the term before about the wheels coming off the wagon and maybe people will start believing me now, that Cabrera doesn’t let it happen. He’s found a way to minimize the damage when things start to go wrong for him. I think it’s a sign of maturity and confidence.”

Gotta see a few more starts like this
before I get excited. Hopefully, Cabs will rehab his value to become trade bait in July or the offseason. If Kranitz can keep Cabs straight for the rest of the season, the offseason will be the perfect time to trade him. He’s close to free agency and his value will be at an all time high.

IF
he has actually put it together and he pitches like this for the rest of the season, or at least some semblance of this, there absolutely NO reason to trade him. He’s still young, which fits the rebuilding mantra, and (mind you, IF he stays together) he’s a good pitcher, which I thought we were trying to find.

He is young
But he’s a free agent soon. Trade him and then we can resign him as a free agent if the need arises. i doubt any team would extend Cabs since his track record of success is very limited. We need trading chips to boost the number of position prospects in the system. You either have to trade for him or draft them.

Strike Zone
It was huge for both pitchers early in the game, but I thought shrunk considerably after Markakis gave the home plate umpire an earful.
Don’t forget that Silva walked 2 batters last night, and he only walked 36 batters in 202 innings last year.
I bet Danny has had some months where he’s walked close to 36 batters.

I mean
my skepticism is: Could it possibly be this easy?
Grilled Cheese Kranwich comes in, works with Danny for one ST and 5 Starts and all of a sudden the boy’s pitching like an Ace again? Could Mazzone have been this much of a dipshit to have led him so far astray? Seems way to good to be true. Honestly I’m extremely happy he’s doing so well – but after all the ups and downs it’s going to take a couple years of pinching myself while he rocks the house before I can truly believe it’s going to last.
by Jonny Pops on Apr 24, 2008 9:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
In each of last few good starts there was at least 1 point in the game where I said to myself “Ok, here comes the patented Daniel Cabrera Complete Meltdown”.
And Trembley’s acting like he knew it all along amuses me, but I’m happy for both of them.
Why the Hell Not?
by BrianS on Apr 24, 2008 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again? When did he ever pitch like an ace? Like, really? Having 10 good starts a year doesn’t constitute an “ace,” even if three of them are truly sensational.
The thing is, this new approach (“Jesus Christ, kid, just throw the fastball. Stop with the other shit.”) could get him killed eventually, even if he doesn’t walk people. But it’s refreshing to see him saying, “Look, here it is, hit it or fuck off.” It’s a last resort strategy, which they aren’t going to say because why would they, but it really feels like people are out of ideas with him. “Throw 95% fastballs” is a little, you know, risky against major league hitters. I don’t care how good your fastball is.

I agree with this
It’s way too optimistic to think this last game is the new Cabrera.
However, I do think that if you look at all 5 of his starts this year, that’s a potential blueprint for long term success. A clunker here and there, some command issues, but a more aggressive approach that will enable him to be an average MLB starter.
Screw ace potential, I’ll take a 4.40 ERA from Daniel Cabrera to the bank, put it in a vault, and hire a squadron of mercenaries to fight off Bad Danny.

my unbridled optimism has been based primarily on this point.
In essence, all reports on Mazzone vs Kranitz were:
Mazzone: This is the way you do it. There is no other way.
Kranitz: Let me see what you do well. Then I’ll try to polish that stuff and make it better.
What I’ve thought since the hiring of Kranitz was, “What if someone went up to Cabrera and said, “What do YOU think is your best strategy?”, and then tried to develop from that point onward. It will take some time to see if that question is relevant, and/or if Kranitz is the right guy. But so far, I have to say I’m pleased with the results.

Bedard
He’s always credited Kris Benson for helping him really develop his changeup, which made a world of difference for him. Of course Ray Miller briefly had him going heavy with the change before Benson ever got here, and it was working then, and he got hurt and came off the DL and abandoned it, which made no sense.

Data
The pitch f/x data is pretty interesting:
(FYI, the pitch f/x system was not installed in Camden Yards last year, so there’s a lot of data missing from last year. This year all parks have the system.)
Overall he isn’t throwing that many more fastballs: 82% of his pitches this year, versus 75% of his pitches last year. The truth is, he has always been mostly a fastball pitcher, which is probably a good thing since it’s clearly his best pitch.
I think the breakout by count is pretty revealing. Last year, when Cabrera got ahead of a hitter (which I’m defining as 0-1, 0-2, 1-1, 2-2), he would dick around with his changeup and slider and often squander his advantage.
This year, he’s just going back to his fastball and challenging hitters.
Overall, Cabrera threw fastballs 56% of the time in pitcher’s counts last year, and he’s thrown fastballs 80% of the time in pitcher’s counts this year.
I guess that’s the difference.

Here’s a question.
I usually go to games to see a particular pitcher. I figure if I’m spending my hard earned money I may as well increase my chances of seeing a win.
Who would you go see? Guts, and then watch the team offer zero support? Would you consider Cabrera on the off chance he has a game like last night? I used to go to Cabrera starts. I’m still not sure he’d lure me out.

I give Danny a little bit of a pass...
I don’t think it was smart to bring him up so early and that hurt his development significantly. Had he spent some time in AAA, I think he would have reached this level sooner vice trying to wing it in the bigs. Plus his contract is up soon. Money is always a great motivator.
