Gameday Thread: O's (12-9) at Mariners (11-11)
Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners, Apr 24, 2008 10:10 PM EDT
| Today's Starting Pitchers | GS | IP | ERA | WHIP | BAA | BB | K | W-L |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adam Loewen - LH | 3 | 15.2 | 6.32 | 1.79 | .262 | 12 | 11 | 0-1 |
| Jarrod Washburn - LH | 4 | 24.0 | 4.13 | 1.25 | .304 | 2 | 13 | 1-3 |
From Yahoo! Sports:
The Mariners could have had a good shot at ending their struggles against the Orioles with ace Erik Bedard eligible to come off the disabled list for this game against his former team. However, the left-hander’s return is being pushed back in order to give him another throwing session in the bullpen.
He is scheduled to start Saturday against Oakland.
In his place, the Mariners will turn to Jarrod Washburn (1-3, 4.13 ERA), who’s hoping to avoid losing his third straight start. After falling to Kansas City on April 14, he gave up season highs of four runs and 10 hits in six innings of a 4-1 defeat against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.
Washburn is 6-4 with a 4.52 ERA in 13 career games—12 starts—against the Orioles. Markakis is 1-for-9 with five strikeouts against the left-hander.
Washburn will face Baltimore left-hander Adam Loewen (0-1, 6.32), who’s coming off his first loss of the year. Loewen gave up three runs and six hits while walking five in the 3-1 defeat against the Chicago White Sox last Wednesday.
He was originally scheduled to start Tuesday, but the team gave him some additional time off to work on his command.

Seriously
What is the deal with Bedard? Since when have the Orioles become so frightening? Furthermore, I thought the trade was handled pretty well on the Orioles’ part.

Thorne and Palmer were just saying that Trembley says “Adam Loewen is the reason we’re carrying 13 pitchers.” Is he? Then get him the fuck out of the starting rotation, and get Olson or Liz in there. The “logic” there isn’t. It’s nonsense.

Game Over
At least I’ll get a good night’s sleep.
Not after this...
Hopefully, he’ll let Bierd just throw an inning and let Aquino eat most of this.

Seen this movie before, don’t like the ending. Tell Greg Aquino “Hi!” for me when he comes in for a few innings once we’re down 7-0…

Why pull Loewen?
He’s only thrown 60 pitches and the game is already out of hand.
Its only the second inning
We could come back.
Theoretically.

Seriously though
I get pulling a pitcher early when he’s completely lost command or is giving up HR after HR. But 4 hits? Why waste free pitches out of that arm?
He retired over half the batters he faced. He’d get out of the inning eventually, who cares if it’s 5-0 or 7-0 or 9-0? Make him go 4 innings.
plus the bullpen needs work

hell yeah, leave his ass in there. Why should we blow out the bullpen to clean up HIS mess. Make him stay until 90 pitches, at least!

What is it gonna take
to get Loewen out of the rotation? Albers would be better. At least two guys in AAA would be better. And maybe we could lose this “13 man bullpen” bullshit.

with Albers coming in. I imagine it’ll takea few more starts. I still believe in Adam in the long term though. Right now, he sucks.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
well that's the real conundrum, isn't it
I also think Loewen has some promise, maybe. But we can’t send him down and he’d be an absolute disaster in the bullpen, more than likely. so what CAN we do? I think you have to stick him in the pen, hold your nose, and hope for the best.

Anybody watch Kid Masterson yesterday (er, this afternoon)? He looked distressingly good. The Angels apparently woke up after his 6, but still, it don’t bode well.

Masterson = 4 BBs and a HR
I didn’t watch the game, but the box score doesn’t impress me.
Angel hitters looked alternately confused and overmatched. Great sinker, lotsa grounders, excellent mound presence for an AA player in ML debut.
We’ll be seeing a lot of him.

Bradford
At least he’s still got it.
Against RH hitters, at least.
Damn, I thought McLaren was a total idiot,
but I think your Trembley is giving our incompetent manager a run for his money. Why would you bring out a lefty reliever for ichiro when ichiro has both historical reverse platoon splits, and ripped into Walker career.
comment from #mariners:
[00:45:25] <@d-v0n> When will managers learn to stop bringing in lefties to face Ichiro? Do they not know how to look at splits?
Says it all, right there.
And this is the same guy
Who didn’t bring in Walker to face Ibanez.
Utterly mystifying.

i was at a torrential rainstorm at OPACY a few years ago...
...at a game I think Larry Bigbie eventually ended with a 10th inning dong. Some tragic wastes of blood, rednecks from Carroll County, no doubt, ran on the field during the rain delay. the cops who had to walk out into the rain were not happy about it, made the dinks kneel in the wet OF to get cuffed.
once they were out of sight, I presume nightsticks were introduced to intimate parts of anatomies. i suspect there may have been cornholing.

Wow
I was just thinking that there’s no shot at a GIDP with Ichiro running.
That was his 36th career GIDP
Rice hit into 36 in 1984.
RIpken hit into 32 in 1985.
ah, yes
Jim Rice. The most feared hitter to ever walk the planet. Managers saw Rice come up with the bases loaded and they said, “You know what? Fuck it. I’m scared - I’m not ashamed to admit it. Let’s walk him. Fuck this. I’m going home. Hang on, I - oh, fuck, I shit my pants. Jim Rice, my God.”
It never actually happened even once but hey! Good copy about Jim Rice, feared fearsman. A sword-wielding Danzig of his day.
I often wonder what would happen if Bob Gibson (in prime) faced Jim Rice (in prime). I fear the earth would have collapsed around them, leaving only the mound, the batters box area, and the outfield wall. COME GET IT MOTHERFUCKERS.
