New Blog: Sounder At Heart for Seattle Sounders Fans!

O's 8, Mariners 7: Goodnight, Seattle, we love you!

I came into tonight's game late, and it was 5-0 Mariners. First thing I saw was Jay Payton go deep. The Orioles went on to win 8-7, after I immediately proclaimed that we would win tonight. Just had a feelin', ya know? The first thing I see is a Jay Payton home run. We're winning this thing.

Powter_medium I missed another fabulous start from Adam Loewen, who went two and two-thirds (60 pitches, 33 strikes) with three walks, a strikeout, four hits, five earned runs, and a homer allowed to Adrian Beltre. His ERA is now 7.85. Does anyone really think this dude deserves a rotation spot instead of Matt Albers? Really? I know the team is invested in Loewen, but at what point do you have to STOP THE INSANITY?

The guy can't pitch. Trembley is on record as saying we're foolishly carrying thirteen pitchers (and thus, a bench consisting of Brandon Fahey, Guillermo Quiroz and Jay Payton) because Loewen can't go deep into games.

He's not getting any better about it! You can stick him in the bullpen (since optioning him isn't really an, um, option), but that'll spell disaster, most likely. A couple of years ago, one of the Baseball Prospectus guys said that Loewen might be better off there. The way he simply can't keep the ball over the plate, I have my doubts. Sure he could pump his fastball, but he can't control that thing any better than the rest of his junk.

So what do you do with him? He's taking up a valuable spot on the 25-man roster.

After he was gone, it went a lot better. Matt Albers and Jamie Walker gave up an earned run each (both on Ichiro's two-run bomb off of Walker, but we've already discussed the stupidity of matching Ichiro by the book, as he kills lefties and had healthy numbers against Walker career), but RAN-DOOOOOR! pitched two scoreless right after Loewen, Bradford went one and a third, and Sherrill shut the door after some drunks ran onto the field. I had the dreadful Mariners TV broadcast, but apparently Gary Thorne said they were "not taking it lightly" on the knuckleheads (that one credit to the Seattle booth) that got out there.

That gives Shutdown eight saves on the year, five against the Mariners. And that skirt-wearing weiner Erik Bedard is still too afeared of the mighty, mighty O's. As well he should be!

You know who I hate? Yuniesky Betancourt. 3-for-4. That guy kills us. Get him out of here.

Markakis was 2-for-3 with two walks, Millar managed a sac fly, Huff was 1-for-5 with an RBI, Roberts homered in the eighth to put us up for good, and Adam Jones (Player of the Year, 2010 Seattle Mariners) was 3-for-4 with a two-run, go-ahead double in the seventh.

Much fun all around! Now we have a bunch of games in Chicago against the White Sox, so that wraps up our season series against them, too. Let's do it to it!

Another series won. Can't argue with that.

Schedule annoys me

There is something wrong about wrapping up a season series in April. Stupid unbalanced schedule.

it sucks.

For example, I wanted to see Santana pitch. I live near Boston, so I’d have to wait for the Twins to rotate through here and Santana come up in the rotation. I may have missed him years ago, but for the past several years, he never came up in the rotation for the three whole games the Twins played in Boston.

Having NL teams affect the AL pennant races (and vice versa) is an another problem.

I'm personally sick of interleague..

Aside from the practical reason you state, I think the world series loses some of its appeal by the whole thing. I mean, I remember how exciting it was when we finally matched up the best team in the AL with the best team in the NL – and they’d never played each other before and they battled it out.

by Y Not on Apr 25, 2008 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

interleague is useless

Do the Pirates fans really go, “Ooh! The A’S are coming to town!” The novelty is long gone. I really think most people are sick of it.

Bud is not sick of it. Bud is not sick of the NPL sucking, either. Bud is wedged. But then you knew that.

Millar

Please don’t give him any credit in this game. He left 6 men on base, contributing by far the most to our 17 LOB vs Seattle’s 6. Maybe it’s a good sign that we’re blowing so many chances but are still managing to pull off the wins. We could conceivably have more if we were actually clicking on all cylinders.

I love the retardedness of 7-11 paying the White Sox to have their night games start at 7:11 vs the usual 7:05. On national sites, most times are eastern, so the start time shows up as 8:11 anyway.

I don't necessarily want to start this whole argument up again, but...

I can’t help but post these comments from Diamond Dave in the Sun about his philosophy on keeping in starting pitchers:

Decisions differ
In Tuesday’s series opener, Trembley allowed Jeremy Guthrie to start the eighth inning, even though Walker and Dennis Sarfate were ready in the bullpen.

On Wednesday, Trembley pulled Daniel Cabrera in favor of George Sherrill after eight innings even though Cabrera had retired 15 of his final 16 batters and his pitch count was only at 95.

The difference, Trembley said, is that the game was tied when Guthrie went back to the mound, and the Orioles had the lead when Cabrera was removed.

“If it would’ve been tied, I would have done it [with Cabrera] to give him a chance to win,” Trembley said. “Just like I did with Guthrie, I’m going to do what’s right in the long run.

“We’re trying to establish something here, and I’m going to do that for the pitcher. But I’m also going to do for the team what I think is right. Once we took the lead, we have a guy down there [Sherrill] that is going to close games for us.”

I’m confused. What exactly is “right in the long run?”

by silverstadium on Apr 25, 2008 9:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow

Thats the opposite of what makes sense to me. I think its better to leave the guy in if he has a lead, but if the game is tied, put in a fresh arm.

In Cabrera’s case, he only had a one run lead, so bringing in the closer was fine. If he had, say, a 4 run lead, thats when you leave him in.

ask Earl Wever what is right

WINNING GAMES. Not trying to pick up a W for a particular player. That’s bullshit. DO whatever you need to pick up a W.

by drj on Apr 25, 2008 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you on this

Sure, if possible, you want the guy to reap the benefits of his effort. But job #1 is win games. I know we also have a focus on developing players this year, but this wasn’t a case of getting a kid into a situation and see what he does. These were situations where you focus on winning the game.

The trouble with Trembly...

(and I like Trembly), is that he’s got the mentality of a minor league manager. His philosophy for when to leave in and when to pull pitchers may be correct when you are trying to develop kids in AA. But its different in the majors. Up in the show, you got to win games.

the jeff zrbiec wrap up and word choice...

gues the actual language used:

brian roberts

“I kind of had a feeling that something wasn’t right,” second baseman Brian Roberts said. “Yeah, it [stinks]. “

-sucks?

jamie walker

“That pitch should have been hit out,” said Walker, who has given up game-tying homers in three of his last six outings. “[Heck], my son could of hit that ball out. If we had lost, I’d have probably chewed my arm off. But that said, we won the game and that’s all I give a [damn] about.”

If Loewen checks out healthy

At best, you give him another start or two before handing his job to Albers. Loewen can work out his kinks and get experience as the long man.

I'm OK

with getting someone else in there but how does Albers name appear at the top of the list? I know he pitched well his spot start but this guy does have a bit of a track record. He made 18 starts last year and appeared in 31 games to the tune of a 5.86 ERA, 18 HR and 50 walks in about 110 innings. I’d lean more towards giving one of the other younger guys a shot. I know Albers can still turn it around and all that but whateva.

Olson is really the only other deserving candidate

Between Olson or Albers, you have to go with Albers given his recent success. He’s already made one start and did well.

I’d like to see Liz have at least half a year at AAA, before I promote him (preferably a full year). Olson would work, but Albers has been on fire this year. Albers deserves to get the start.

Lance Cormier? ahhahahahah…I forgot we had that sack. I thought Alberto Castillo was a backup catcher? Apparently he’s on the AAA pitching staff too.

Albers has really good stuff. As for younger guys, Albers is 25. Olson is 24. Liz is 25. Penn is 23. So if you want YOUNGEST, then hey Hayden Penn!

As a recovering carnivore, the only two things I miss are (1) chicken wings and (2) meat sauce on a Zweigle’s. Interesting how they are both regional cuisine.

If I recall correctly, the author of The Ultimate Minor League Baseball Roadtrip called the Zweigle’s white hot with meat sauce the best dog in minor league baseball.
