SEATTLE - The Orioles announced today that they have placed left-handed pitcher Adam Loewen on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow soreness. Infielder Eider Torres was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to fill Loewen's spot on the roster.
Loewen, a 24-year-old left-hander who gave up five earned runs and lasted just 2 2/3 innings in the Orioles' 8-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night, acknowledged last night what some of his teammates had suspected while watching him labor through the second shortest outing of his career.
When he was removed from the game, Loewen complained of forearm discomfort in his pitching arm that he claims is unrelated to the stress fracture in his elbow that required surgery last June.

who the hell is eider torres?
Poor Scott Moore. I doubt he’ll be much good, but can’t the guy get a break?

Hmm...
Is Scott Moore hurt?

TORRES .338/.390/.405 0HR 11RBI 7BB 10K
At any rate, Torres is currently torrid at the plate and actually plays SS. Start him!

Thank god
Our national nightmare is over. The menace that is Adam Loewen has been stopped, if only for a short time. Drinks for everyone!

guys...
Eider Torres sucks. He’s 25 years old and has a minor league line of .280/.325/.350. With not a single major league at-bat. He didn’t even make it into this year’s Baseball Prospectus. We’ve just added a third Fahey/Hernandez.

yeah, good grief look at the SLG percent
It’s barely above his OBP. But whatever, Cintron, Fahey, Torres, Luis, they all suck. I would just go with the guy with the best glove at this point.

that still probably favors Cintron
None of them are REALLY a shortstop to begin with. Fahey and Luis don’t have the arm for it and Cintron and Torres are also probably better off at second base.

come on...
luis hernandez is a special kind of suck. it takes a whole lot of (what’s the opposite of effort?) to have a sub300 career minor league on base percentage.

sure
He’s probably the worst of the three of them. And that’s saying a ton because they’re all terrible. If we were talking about a Mark Belanger or Ozzie Smith type of defensive shortstop here then great. But we’re totally not, you know? Hernandez throws as well as David Eckstein and Fahey isn’t far behind.

Yeah, but...
If this version of Fahey/Hernandez can hit until we have an actual major-league caliber player to plug into SS, I’m all for it.

he can't
That’s my point. He has a .675 career OPS in the minor leagues. There is no reason for Alex Cintron to continue to “get swings in at Norfolk.” It’s not like he’s never played baseball.

Cintron
is currently hitting Mendoza in Norfolk. We’re not talking a permanent solution here, so I’d go with the hot hand. If Cintron gets it together & Torres reverts to… well, Eider Torres form, swap them out.
We’ve got four guys, none of whom are actually good.

yes
And Cintron is the best of the lot. I don’t care what his batting average is in Norfolk after like five games.

Loewen out - good
Torres in – bad
Easy come, easy go.

Will they bring up another pitcher?
When I read that Eider Torres was brought up, I immediately assumed it would be Albers (or Jim Johnson, I suppose) who took Loewen’s place in the rotation. But is it possible that they just called Torres up until it’s Loewen’s turn in the rotation again? It doesn’t come up until Tuesday, so they can conceivably have an extra bat on the bench the entire weekend. Still doesn’t make much sense why they’d call up Torres of all people. Maybe they’ll option him and call up Olson or someone for Tuesday? I hate 13 pitchers but I hate Eider Torres more.

We'll know soon
Olson is due to start for Norfolk tonight, so he’ll either get scratched or only pitch a few innings if they want him to take Loewen’s spot in 4 days.
