You think OUR pitchers stink?
Barry Zito is so God awful that he's been sent to the bullpen, in year number two of a seven-year, $119 million deal.
Zito's 2007 wasn't quite as bad as people made it out to be from a black-and-white perspective, though he was grossly overpaid. But this year? 0-6, 7.53 ERA, 1.95 WHIP, batters are hitting .336 off of him, he's walking more than he strikes out. Dude looks as cooked as a 30-year old pitcher can.

wow...
it takes a special effort to make trax look like cy young, but doggone it, barry done done it.
ronnie's a dillweed.
I feel kinda bad for San Fran
I mean, it was never a good contract, but who could have predicted it’d end up this way?
He's a poster boy for why smart teams aren't so keen on the free agent market
Spiraling salaries and questionable output. Get a lot of young hosses and carefully supplement. I keep asking myself when will GMs start showing some restraint. I doubt any time soon. I just hope the O’s stop the madness, as AM seems inclined to do.
but you have to use the free agent market some
But most smart teams wont give 7 year deals, especially to pitchers. But Barry is only 29 so this swift decline is a little abrupt. So i do feel bad for the Giants.

Newest theory
You buy hitters, develop pitchers. Heard that at least 3 times this week in various analysis pieces across the intergoogles.

Bats are less risky
But the escalating prices still make it tough for most teams to stock up on bats.
surprised
I didn’t think the Zito signing was good. He was clearly more a 3 or 4 guy who’s getting paid ace money. But I’m surprised he’s completely unuseable, terrible, god awful. He’s apparently lost a lot of velocity. I would like to know why. Is it age, injury, both?
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
He doesnt seem as strong this year as a couple years ago.
He is constantly tinkering with his throwing. He got a lot of bad press at the beginning of last year for fiddling with his motion right after the trade. It is hard to tell if he is slowing down a bit this year or if his record is a result of a change on this part . It looks to me like he isnt throwing as hard as he did a couple years back.

Everything he throws
is up, up, up.
No one in the Majors is getting guys out with 86 MPH fastballs on the outside edge above the waist.
There's no crying in baseball
Part of me wishes
that the Yankees ended up with this contract.
OK…all me does.

Not as expensive
but they do still have Pavano on their books
"Turn them over to us one time. I'll show them where the other side of the fence is." - Dave Trembley
And...
they paid a decent chunk of the Kevin Brown debacle too, didn’t they?
And they’re a bad short left collision away from eating another hundred million.
The more these $100M deals blow up, the better for baseball.

They're still thinking
Pavano may pitch for them this season. Unless 1 of their 2 kid starters turns it around in a hurry, that may be their best option.
You can't fix stupid. Stupid is forever.
Yes!
The MFY are down to hoping CARL PAVANO becomes their rotation savior! Sweet!

The idea would be
to put him in the pen & make Joba a starter. So suggested Fredo Steinbrenner

yak yak
The bay area press is having a field day on this story today. Zito was supposed to be the franchise player that replaced Bonds. Plenty of people are now saying “I TOLD you they paid too much for this guy!”

well
Everyone thought they paid too much for that guy.

Except for the GM of the Giants at the time...
"Turn them over to us one time. I'll show them where the other side of the fence is." - Dave Trembley
..and they were right.
Duane Kiper on the Giants talk radio this morning said he’s not looking forward to the in-game camera shots of Zito sitting on a plastic chair in the bullpen with hotdog wrappers blowing around his feet.

This is a sad situation in which no one wins...
....well, except for the fact that Barry’s pocketing $118 mil.
It’s almost a pity, though, as looking at his wiki entry, he sure looks like a fun guy:
“Zito is known for his idiosyncrasies, and his offbeat personality. He has earned the nicknames “Planet Zito” and “Captain Quirk”.[25] He once made it a practice to buy his own autographed baseball cards on eBay; when asked why he bought them at auction for high prices rather than acquiring unsigned cards and signing them himself, Zito replied, “Because they’re authenticated.” Despite batting and throwing left-handed, Zito signs autographs for fans at the ballpark right-handed.
At his introductory press conference with the Giants, Zito said he liked the way his uniform number 75 looked, because the 7 and the 5 are like a “shelf” to hold the name “Zito” up. He carries pink satin pillows on the road, collects stuffed animals (such as a good luck teddy bear, with which he used to travel), and burns incense to relax.[26] Early in his career, Zito dyed his hair blue. He plays guitar, surfs, practices yoga, and follows Zen. He has done yoga poses in the outfield, and meditates before games.”
