TEX to Trade/Release Botts
Jason Botts has asked for his trade or release from the Texas Rangers. I have to admit, I have a small man crush on him. I think, given a fair shake to hit, he could put up some decent numbers. He's 27 and the Rangers have called him up and sent him down 4 different times. Sign him up and let him hit DH for this club!!! It's not like it would be a stretch for the Rangers to actually miss on someone.

He played some 1b in the minors
Lets get Kevbo out of here and bring this guy in for a bucket of balls.

Uh...
you probably don’t want him on 1B. I’ve watched him play plenty of LF in AAA and even that’s pushing it. You are talking about a 6-5, 250lb, .320avg, .980ops, minor league hitter who has only been given 160+ major league at bats. You put him in the DH spot and let the kid hit.

2 things:
1. This is a man, not a kid. He’s 27.
2. 1B is further down the defensive spectrum than LF. Only one spot, but it’s at least theoretically easier.
That said, I still wouldn’t mind giving him a shot, at least to platoon with the Huffman at DH (if he bats righty, that is).
Maybe they would take Trax for him
Apparently they are disparate for pitching, having recently signed a certain fat Aruban.

The fear is is he’s a Quadruple-A hitter. The upside is he might mash. The most likely scenario is somewhere in between. Japan beckons!
We
have AA guys on the roster…I’d take a AAAA guy right now. I also don’t get where he could be a AAAA after 160+ ABs in the majors for the Rangers. He has absolutely mashed in the minors. What is the cutoff in ABs before a guy can no longer play?

eh
Lots of guys mash in the minors. Jon Knott has mashed in the minors. Then again I thought the Orioles should’ve given him a chance to play, too. I agree with you on Botts, but a tag’s a tag, and a lot of times, guys live up to that tag.

we have to many AAAA guys right now
and frankly, too many minor leaguers on the big club

I doubt
he would ever clear waivers, but should that happen I think this would be a low-risk, high-reward pickup. Plus, my man crush knows no boundaries. I don’t think the O’s should trade for him by any means. Unless of course they traded Fahey.

they should jump on Botts
why not? so it’ll cost Mascot or Huff some ABs? look forward.

I don't see him having that much value...
He’s 27 years old and has an OPS of 665 at the ML in about 250 AB’s. That doesn’t seem to me to be anything to get too excited about in a guy who would likely have to play 1B or DH.
He put some decent numbers in minors, but if you look those numbers were put up in the Pacific Coast League; which has a pretty strong reputation of being a hitters league.

I'm with SC
I think it’s the kind of thing they should try but almost certainly won’t, and even if they did there’s a pretty high chance of it not working out.
Botts has some strengths, but when he gets called up and strikes out 18 times in 38 AB teams sour on him pretty quickly, particularly given his complete lack of defensive value.
