O's 5, Mariners 4: Sweeps are Birdland!

Pictured above is Eric O'Flaherty, Patron Saint of Blowing Games. In another nail-biter, the O's AGAIN came from behind to score a 5-4 win over Seattle, giving the Birds their first four-game sweep since 2004. O'Flaherty was inexplicably brought into the game in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a solo home run to an ice cold Aubrey Huff, which turned out to be the game winner.

Now, look, I'm going to be a realist for a second. This team can't keep winning games by coming from behind. It's not going to work.

Now that I'm done with that, THIS IS BIRDLAND, G!

Luis Luis came through with a 2-for-2 day at the plate and made some fine defensive plays behind our pitchers, who started off on the familiar rocky road thanks to Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera went six innings, which he should get some credit for after allowing two first inning solo home runs to Ichiro and Raul Ibanez, putting the O's in a hole right away. Over the six innings, Cabrera allowed four earned runs on five hits and four walks, with five strikeouts.

The difference between Cabrera now and the old Cabrera is he throws slower. It's probably on purpose, with him trying to control the ball better, but it does hurt his K-rate and does make him more hittable, which is going to give him a lot of really horrific outings, like it did last year. The best thing he had going for him was he was really hard to hit; you either struck out or walked, in most cases. Since his walk rates aren't falling any, that means he's letting MORE guys on base. Which is bad news.

But, again, now that I'm done with that, THIS IS BIRDLAND, SON!

Jamie Walker got a couple of outs today, and Dennis Sarfate picked up the win. I really like Dennis the Menace so far -- that guy's philosophy seems to be, "Hey, you. Hit THIS." His fastball is really nice, he's getting ahead in counts, and he's just doing a really good job. He's so good, in fact, that I think we could be looking at a top-notch setup guy or even a closer. Not that we need another closer right now, since George Sherrill is now 4-for-4 in save opportunities, as he got a 1-2-3 ninth inning on Betancourt, Ichiro and Lopez.

Carlos Silva was very Carlos Silva for the Mariners, going seven, allowing four earned on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

For the O's, Brian Roberts went 3-for-4 with two RBI to salvage what had been a pretty bad series for him, and Melvin Mora hit a two-run homer in the third, capping a three-run inning where the Birds took their first lead of the game.

The Mariners tied it in the top of the fourth on an idiotic "defensive indifference" play by Cabrera. Let's not even get into it.

Five in a row. First place. Five in a row!

I'm getting some serious "first half of 2005" vibes about this team, but this is a team that's built in a way that it could get better as the season goes on. If they steal enough games early...who knows?

Jay Payton got to pinch run. Never complain about PT, Jay!

We're having some good fun to start this season. On to Arlington! Let's mess with Texas.

I do send one recommendation to M's fans, though: Be careful about hoping John McLaren gets the ax. You might get Sam Perlozzo.

No shit

I'm glad he will not be a part of any future Oriole moments, and will never again know what it feels like to win a game as a Baltimore Oriole.

Then again, the man did just get paid $11M to go home and never come back, so he's probably hitting the links and just generally not giving a shit.

iow: Jay Gibbons is not Birdland

He's not even in the same continent as Birdland

His GPS in his car

can't even FIND Birdland.

Kind of glad?

I'm very glad that good-for-nothin' isn't taking up a roster spot while Scott Moore sits in AAA.

This bullpen shit

Is really starting to trip me up. I guess these four games are supposed to be repayment for all of last year.

ambivalence

I'm always happy when we win, but I am not sure if this isn't a case of false hope. I really hope that MacPhail sticks to his plan and deals some of these vets in two or three months time.

Agreed

But if (this is the biggest if you can imagine) this team SOMEHOW finds itself a few games out of contention come the trade deadline - will Angelos allow it? And more importantly, would it be the right move?

I don't wanna think about crap like that right now. I just wanna bask in the glow of the asskicking we just rained down upon the Mariners. I got nothin' against 'em, but damn it feels good.

I don't blame Bedard

For not wanting to face the Orioles after seeing how they swept the M's

by wscott on Apr 7, 2008 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

2005

I doubt Angelos will allow it. Let's say it's the ASB and they are something like 42-43 only 4 games out of the wild card (which I think is best, best, best case scenario), what do we do then? MacPhail has to trade Huff, Millar, Mora, Ramon, Walker, and Bradford if he can imo. The good part about the O's doing well is that hopefully Huff won't have his normal first half slump and we can flip in time to be somebody else's problem.

I recall that the White Sox pulled some white flag shit a few years before they won. I'm not sure if any of the pieces they got back were instrumental in them winning the series though.

come July

"But if (this is the biggest if you can imagine) this team SOMEHOW finds itself a few games out of contention come the trade deadline - will Angelos allow it? And more importantly, would it be the right move?"

I still think we have a 67 win team, but I could see us hovering near .500 in July since we've done that in the recent past and this team isn't that much different from past ones. Andy is suppose to have full control. If we're 3 or 4 games under .500 come July, Roberts and Sherrill should be gone assuming they keep playing well. Traschel, Millar, and Payton should be gone as well with a little bit of luck. Actually, I'm expecting to Payton to pull some stupid shit as a calculated attempt to get traded because Scott made him a 4th OF. Once the year is up, I think Walker and Bradford may be moveable as well since their contracts won't be as expensive.

He will

He's a realist. I mean, this was a team that was 7 games in 1st place in 2005 and crashed back to reality hard. Other off-field factors came into play, but I don't think MacPhail is folled about what this team is. He will trade if it will make the team even better in a few years.

think about it another way

This is completely negated by the fact that we need Roberts, Mora, Huff, Millar, Traschel, Walker, Bradford and Sherrill to be playing well, and generally contributing to the winning of some baseball games. Sherrill in particular showed any team that thinks they are in need of a closer just what he can do.

Detroit's bullpen is a mess, if they get the rest of their stuff together, we could be able to ship our specialists to them.

I don't think we'll ever get rid of Huff, but it's worth a shot.

by math_geek on Apr 7, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

walker

I don't know if Detroit has inquired about Jaime Walker, but that would be a very logical place from the Tigers' perspective. I don't think they have much of a system beyond Porcello though.

Tigers

have the second highest payroll in baseball in 08. The inability to add payroll may be prohibiting player acquisitions for them such as obtaining Walker unless we're willing to take salary back.

I'll take

Miguel Cabrera for Jamie Walker. Straight up, too, they don't have to throw in another guy.

haha no kidding

I'm excited, because it's always nice to win... but there's no way in hell I'm thinking that this is going to carry on. In fact, there is NO CHANCE this will carry on this year... so if I were you guys, I wouldn't worry about a mid-season trade-parade.

by Y Not on Apr 7, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

huh?

A mid-season trade parade is basically what we want! Millar, Mora, Huff, Payton, Roberts, Trachsel, Cabrera, Sherrill, Walker, Bradford -- they can all go.

woops, i wasn't clear:

i meant the OTHER type of trade-parade... you know - the type that drained our minor league system because we wanted to win NOW NOW NOW...

Couple things....

I was at the game...(ketchup won, by the way)...It seemed the ushers outnumbered the fans for the first few innings. You have got to give it up for Huff. He handed us a sweep. Thank you Aubrey. I was sitting behind the visitors dugout and there were more than a few out of towners, some from Seattle, giving Huff endless shit about being a redneck. Well fuck it, he's OUR redneck and he gave us something we're not used to here... a fucking SWEEP. So it's past time to say ...Huff is Birdland.

This series was more

the Mariners totally stinking up the joint than the Orioles playing phenomenally. Hell, I think the Rangers will put up a much better fight, look how they did versus LAA.

by redwolf75 on Apr 7, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

The Mariners were hideous. The bullpen was terrible, the bullpen management was worse -- they're clearly lost without Putz to go to at the end of a game.

And they have got to find someone to replace Richie Sexson if they have any plans on competing for the AL West title. He is d-o-n-e DONE.

by Scott Christ on Apr 7, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He's actually OPSing over .800 at this point.

I'm gonna' give him a month. If he's stinking up the joint, he will be dead to me.

Oh, and enjoying George Sherrill?

by redwolf75 on Apr 7, 2008 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

.800 ops from hitting pitcher's mistakes

How is he not dead to you after last year?

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Sherrill

His first appearance scared the crap out of me. Very John Parrish-y, making it more exciting than it has to be and running that thin line between holding it down and disaster. Since then he's been pretty automatic.

It's April, but hey.

by Scott Christ on Apr 8, 2008 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

on one hand i am super excited, but one the other hand, i know it's the other team losing game as much as it's us winning the game

when the other team would want to lose the game but we wouldn't let them.
