He's our Cris Carter
"All he does is hit homeruns."
Don't look at the average. PLEASE don't look at the average. But when he hits it, he hits it hard.

And when Buddy Ryan said
about Cris Carter "All he does is catch touchdowns," he didn't mean it as a COMPLIMENT. The average fan laughed at the seeming inanity of the statement. Real fans knew Buddy was right in pointing out what Cris didn't do - everything else aside from catching touchdowns.
Aubrey Huff ain't breaking out of nuthin'. Let's just hope he continues to show some pop so we can trade him for something worthwhile.

believe me
When the time comes, there'll be plenty of teams willing to take a guy with some sock from the left side that "can play four positions," ha ha ha ha.

Seems I've struck a nerve
What I'm advocating is some fan support. Who wouldn't feel a town was a little horseshitty if they didn't appreciate the fact that a guy stood at the plate and took a fastball deep to the far part of the park to win the sweep at a key part of the series and still got shit on by the "fans" because they don't like his style. Today he was Johnny Unitas for Baltimore. Look at the standings and enjoy. Here and now grasshoppers.

Aubrey Huff is NO Johnny Unitas
Nevertheless, Huff is Birdland (x2).
Perhaps he just really likes the last game of the series.

It's the other
78.4% of the time that he DOESN'T get a hit I have a problem with.

How is batting average over six games relevent?
Huff hit .280 last year as hard as that is to believe.
Batting average isn't his problem. His problem was sucking so astonishingly hard when the games were actually close early last year and not deciding to start hitting until after we were giving up 20 runs a night. By then everyone but the most masochistic had tuned out so it's understandable that some are surprised that Aubrey is indeed capable of not sucking.
If he can find a way to even out the streakiness and maybe pop and extra one out every couple weeks or so he's a valuable player. Maybe could even get something decent for him in July.
by willhouse on Apr 7, 2008 11:17 PM EDT 0 recs
I think...
you are having selective memory.
Huff's splits last year:
Close and Late - .315/.337/.533/.870
RISP - .836 OPS
Runners On Base - .822
Man on Third,
The list goes on.
Huff's problem was that he was the worst player in baseball in July, and among the worst players in baseball in April and May, while being the best player in baseball in August and among the best in September, while being good in June.
Meaning he was woefully inconsistent, which I'm sure pissed some people off.
People here are angry mostly that he is paid a decent rate and for his comments about the city's night life, etc, but in reality he is mostly an average player (and doesn't actually suck). I do think he could have a bounce back year of sorts though nothing like he put up in his earlier days.

Huff
His VORP last year was 15.8, which was his highest mark in a couple years, actually (though quite close to his 2006 split between Tampa and Houston).
O's VORPs from last year (just the hitters):
Roberts 48.6
Markakis 38.4
Tejada 31.8
Huff 15.8
Millar 14.4
Mora 13.4
Redman 8.8
Ramon 8.4
Patterson 8.4
Payton -8.1
Bako -8.7
Gibbons -11.8
It's not that I think Huff is bad -- I've never said that. It's that he IS average, but he's been signed by this team and then relied upon to be better than that. My problem with his play is really much more about the overmatched front office that signed him. My problem with HUFF is that he's a horse's ass. That's his "style."
His style is also that he always sucks in April and May and is always good late. Knowing that he's going to be a detriment to the team for two months sort of makes him a pain in the ass. Yes, he hit a home run yesterday and tore up the Rays. That shit is Birdland. He's also hitting .217 with a .280 OBP, and if y'all think he's gonna slug .565 for the season, you're nuts. Prior to the GW homer, he was 1-for-14 in the series against Seattle.

right
and I acknowledge that in my post. His inconsistency borderlines on ridiculous.
As for his numbers this year, we are talking about a very small sample size. He isn't going to slug. 565, but I'm sure he isn't going to hit .217 either.

My problem is...
he's GREAT in August and September, and sucked in April, May and July.
We kinda need him to show up in April and May to make June relevant, let alone July and August.
