OT: music I am mildly obsessed with right now
Bobby Cook & the Sleepers.
From London.
What it sounds like: Bruce Springsteen meets The Arcade Fire.
LIsten to the song "Secrets" if you really want to be floored.
My other favorite from is "Deja Vu," which is not on his Myspace. It's on Youtube though. http://www.myspace.com/bobbycookmusic
Read me gush about him on my blog: Bobby Cook
I am really psyched to see him next month. If this is not enough words, then SB Nation can eat shit.
What are you listening to? Vampire Weekend is overrated (Yeasayer is better) and Band of Horses is the "Memento" of indie bands.
FanPosts are user-created content and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Camden Chat or SB Nation. They might, though.

I'ma get on this one
Sounds like something I'd enjoy.
Although:
What it sounds like: Bruce Springsteen meets The Arcade Fire.
So, like that one song on AF's second album?
i don't know
i listened to it once and thought it was boring
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
Midly obsessed?
SC will spit Coke out his nose if he knows this band, but Damone. They were on the Tony Hawk Downhill Jam soundtrack, and my 11-year-old daughter loves them.
So I got the album off iTunes and listed to the rest, and it's good pop punk. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it's good guitar-based tunes I can listed to with my kid and not hit the mute button every minute.
"Out Here All Night" is a damn catchy tune. "What We Came Here For" is pretty good, too.
/what the hell DO you call it when you DL it from iTunes? It's not a CD, but album just sounds so old!
"I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves." - Major League
ha!
I do Damone's radio.....lead singer is hot.
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
She was 16 when the first CD came out
19 when the second did. So she's legal....now.
"I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves." - Major League
I am embarrased to admit this
and I'm, like 15 years late or something.
But Enter Sandman has been stuck in my head for over a week now. Fuckin' song won't go away. I tried playing it awhile on a loop the other day in an effort to MAKE myself sick of it. No dice.
Used it as a lullaby for my kids
That and Creeping Death. Only 2 tunes I could remember all the words to at 2 a.m. feedings. Hey, my youngest turns 8 tomorrow, so it mustn't have hurt.

Vampire Weekend is exactly like "Graceland" era Paul Simon
Not that that's necessarily a bad thing...but yeah...I got the album a week ago, and while I enjoyed it, it really didn't warrant that insane hype. I guess it's like the Strokes in 2001, but I actually LOVED that debut album.
Something that I guess is mildly embarrassing about me as a 33 year old heterosexual married guy....I absolutely love (bordering on obsessed with) Nicole Atkins. She has this great retro-pop torch-song sound, and is incredibly hot to boot.
and here's her at SXSW covering one of my favorite songs of all time.
except...
they wrote and played all the music...makes a bit of a difference. record did finally inspire me to buy the indestructible beat of soweto on cd.

re:
I loved Vampire Weekend, but it got kinda old. Not a very long album. Got kinda tired of it. I still feel good when one of their songs comes up on random, though.
Right now: Listening to some Bowie in a kind of haphazard fashion (mostly singles...lame, I know). Just got Colin Meloy's solo live album, which is kinda uneven, but did push me back into well-worn Decemberists territory.
Just making my way out of a heavy Imogen Heap obsession. She's dreamy.
I go back to Bowie at least twice a year
I've been ALL about Neil Young and Gram Parsons as of late

no obsessions at the moment
sort of enjoy the new drive by truckers.
otherwise, been listening a lot to the cowboy junkies trinity session record, indestructible beat (per above) and a james mcmurtry compilation.
i AM obsessed w/ the jame mcmurtry song choctaw bingo.
trinity sessions
is a classic especially sweet jane. I think Lou Reed said it's his favor VU cover. Cowboy Junkies actually do a lot of good covers. I especially like their versions of Neil Young's Powerfinger and my boy Springsteen's Thunder Road.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
powderfinger
is one of my favorite neil songs
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
my favorite neil album is an odd one:
Rust Never Sleeps

live albums
are normally shit
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
music
I've been to Robbie Robertson's Broken Arrow obsessively lately. LOVE this song. And I hate the fact that Rod Stewart covered it. Along with Forever Young, Downtown Train, and this song, I'll forgive Rod these acts of treason.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
BoH
The second record is pretty weak sauce, tho I still listen to the demos for the first record pretty regularly. I'd recommend grabbing the Grand Archives record. I go pretty limp for any ex-Carissa's Wierd band, and this is no exception.
Plus, the new Deep Sleep 7" is, as the kids say, the tits. If you like Adolescents/Descendents-style pop hardcore, snatch it up.

Here's a few...
These are not brand new, but they're what I can't pry from my car's CD changer to save my life, so here you go:
I am totally down with The New Pornographers. I did not like it one iota the first time I heard it (same with Arcade Fire), but then it grew on me like a Spring Training porn 'stache.
I cannot shake Cut/Copy's "Hearts On Fire" from my brain for more than 5 minutes. Were you hungry for a new New Order? Here's a heaping plate-full of 80's electronic goodness that drips with Saturday morning cartoon commercials & sexy pop synth. Check out the bass line at the end. All that's missing is Bernard Sumner.
As long as I'm talking about electro-pop, JuniorBoys is some good shiznit. "So This is Goodbye" is much more upbeat than their first release & sounds like it was mixed by Timbaland on a very mellow afternoon.
If you don't know who Grand National is, go out & buy their first disc "Kicking the National Habit" right now. Then tell me if that isn't what The Police would sound like if they were formed in the early 00's.
And, just to wrap this up with some kick-ass guitar, The Raconteurs' new single "Consoler of the Lonely" is testament to the fact that whatever Jack White touches is instant gold, whether it be some homely drummer girl or an alleged super group. Dude may smuggle the occasional plum, but he's the white Jimmy Hendrix & LedZep reincarnated in my book.
Rockawn.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
love Grand National
I think their first album is just as good, and they are super nice guys to boot. They do a killer cover of Neil Young's "Old Man."
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
New Pornographers are tight
but most people have heard of them. Sorry to dissapoint, guys, I have been slumping on music lately, too many good sports to watch.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
-Jack Handey
Listening to a ton of Albert King lately.
"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."
I never feel so out of the loop
as when you people talk about music. I honestly haven't heard of most of the bands you guys mention whenever there is a music topic.
well stace...
....you know you can sample almost all of these bands on myspace/youtube/assorted other points on the internets
Word, Stacey.
But I'm used to that. Greta's a big music snob and I'm all, "Man, I LOVE Journey."
"Yeah, I mean - Cal was much more important to me growing up than Jesus. And frankly, set just as good an example. Loyalty, discipline, hard work, humility, generosity, charity, AND 3,184 career hits. Is JESUS in the 3,000 hit club? I don't think so." - 2632
I never know what the boys are talking about either.
Dirty hipsters.

That's OK...
I don't know them either, 90% of the time.
"I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves." - Major League
Yes but
I was singing along to The Beatles "The End" the other day and Greta actually congratulated me on singing the right notes. I could not tell you what the right notes are if my life depended on it. Doesn't stop me from singing though. Much to the delight of my friends, I'd imagine.
Anyway, for what it's worth, I've been listening to a lot of Michael Jackson lately. Heh.
"Yeah, I mean - Cal was much more important to me growing up than Jesus. And frankly, set just as good an example. Loyalty, discipline, hard work, humility, generosity, charity, AND 3,184 career hits. Is JESUS in the 3,000 hit club? I don't think so." - 2632
Oh me too!
for the month of March XM radio had an all Michael Jackson channel to celebrate the re-release of Thriller, and it was awesome.
We might've gone to a Michael Jackson sing-along last weekend
and it might've been LEGENDARY.
I might've danced on the stage.

It was pretty goddamn great.

Thriller has three good songs
COUNT IT
I've never understood post-Jackson 5 Michael Jackson save for the random singles. Michael Jackson was Stone Temple Pilots but, you know, a billion times bigger. Good greatest hits.

you don't like off the wall?
i mean outside, of off the wall and thriller i ain't got no use for the guy as a solo artist, but i think those are pretty good pop records.

Off The Wall
is probably one of my favorite albums. I can listen to every song on there. I like Thriller, too, but would skip over a number of the songs. I don't have much use for MJ after Thriller.
to each their own...
i'll spare you my diatribe on "proper noun" 70s rock bands.

Billie Jean is pretty much the reason Greta and I are friends
Plus there's MJ dancing on a giant Lite Brite and who doesn't love that?

MJ has at most 7 or 8 good songs
all of them on Off the Wall and Thriiller. The Jackson 5 was AMAZING
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
Music...
GZA "Liquid Swords" instrumentals
Clipse "Grindin", just the 1 song, it never gets old
lots of old school hip hop (EPMD, Eric B & Rakim type shit)
and Southern hip hop because I just read a book about it and filled in the few classics missing from my collection
Your list
would explain the "z" on the end of your screen name....
"I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves." - Major League
last night on MTV hits
they were doing an '88-'89 Yo MTV Raps Hit list. i forgot about some of the vids that they played. it was nice to see slick rick
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
Did you ever hear "The Sun," with Ghostface, RZA, Raekwon and Slick Rick? What a goofy fuckin' song.
by Scott Christ on Apr 11, 2008 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Ahhh "The Sun" is great..
Ghost & Rick the Ruler, great combo of master storytelling MC's with dope old school gold chains before they were fashionable again. That track is too funny...."The Sun could never be pussy, he always come out....he'll stand right there even if you pull your gun out"
I guess that was originally going to be on Bulletproof Wallets, but didn't make it.....it easily would've been the best track on there!
anybody know/like...
this band called dengue fever? i guess if i've heard of them, they must be getting a lot of hype...
kinda cool, though: sort of surf/psychedelic music w/ female vocalist singing in cambodian. i like it quite a bit, though haven't bought the record yet.
i really dig them
i have 3 of their records....
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
not working with them, unfortunately
nonetheless, good band and one of the groups that has spurned my whole international fascination
"If you're not practicing, somebody else is, somewhere, and he'll be ready to take your job." -Brooks Robinson
one reason to like globalization...
so much good african musc that was previously only available via smuggling or hips record shops in ny/london is finally seeing the light of the day via re-issues. this can't be bad thing.
