Thanks for a great month, O's!

I fear that when the Orioles return to Camden Yards on May 13th, they'll look like a different team. Maybe I'm feeling an impending sense of doom from today's ugly loss, but more likely I'm just facing reality. With 7 games against the two teams at the top of the AL West (even if one of them is Oakland, who was supposed to suck this year) and 4 games against what I think is an exciting Kansas City team, the Orioles should consider themselves lucky to return to Baltimore with a .500 record.

I know none of us expected the Orioles to play to their current record and position in the standings before the season started. And I know none of us think they're going to keep it up throughout the year. But it was hard not to get excited watching the O's play this month, no matter what common sense tells us.

That being said, my gut is telling me that this is where it ends. This is the point in the season where the Orioles show us who they are. And that's not a bad thing. We came into this season knowing it was a wash. Knowing that calling the year a success depends more on the development of Adam Jones and other young players, not on the win-loss record. If the team can spend the rest of the season giving encouraging signs in that department while still managing to win a few games, that's as much as I can ask for.

Still, it was a fun month, wasn't it? Those few weeks when Luke Scott was a doubles machine? Having the most awesome bullpen in baseball? Winning 6 out of 7 from the Mariners, and having Erik Bedard wimp out on facing his old teammates? Taking 2 out of 3 from the Yankees? Daniel Cabrera being sort of awesome?

I think no matter what happens from here on out, I'll be happy if the boys keep playing their hearts out and if Adam Jones and our young pitchers give us reason to believe in the future. The rest is up to Andy MacPhail to make sure we keep going down our current path to respectability.

Diamond Dave and team are offended you expect failure

O’s tired of defending good play

I think the expectation was this team would immediately plummet to the bottom, so April was a nice surprise. For comparison here are the April records of the past 7 years, from 2002 to 2008
12-14 12-12 12-9 16-7 13-13 12-14 15-13

This year is not significantly out of the ordinary. As the days wear on and players get tired and injured, the weak system will be exposed. We’ll see how well the O’s mentally hold up. Every year in recent memory says the team will throw in the towel.

Maybe this year will be different. The best we can ask is when they do take a beating they keep coming back for more. Earn some respect here in the days when we’ve come to expect the team to be spineless quitters

Rafael Palmeiro happened. Sammy Sosa happened. Lee Mazilli AND Sammy Perlozzo IN THE SAME SEASON happened. Jorge Julia and Steve fucking Reed happened. GeronomoGilLarryBigbieEricByrnes happened. Sidney Ponson happened.

The only positive thing on that team post July was Brian Roberts to be honest.

Just some things off the top of my head.

Yeah, BRob was the only positive to come out of that season

To be honest, the end of 2005 was the most frustrated and angry I’ve ever been as an Orioles fan – I seriously entertained thoughts of giving up on them. I came to my senses, but man, were those trying times. Like, just-got-dumped-chest-hurt-type times.

I'm heading to the Angels series baby!

Although the pretty hot right now, but I’ll be rooting for the O’s. Hopefully, I can get autograph or two from O’s players.

I had a pit in my stomach at the end of yesterday's game.

It certainly feels like we’ve just hit the apex of the biggest hill of the rollercoaster.

Embrace it

Just be prepared for the season we all THOUGHT we were gonna have.

Think of it as Opening Day was last Saturday night, and it will all make sense.

I already have - I like being the shitty team that everyone hates to lose to

See: our record vs. the Mariners this year. I love the comments on LookoutLanding like, “We lost six of seven to the Orioles? REALLY?!?” This is how I will enjoy the rest of the season. We won’t win every series (or many at all) but when we do, I’ll enjoy reading the “HOW THE FUCK DID WE LOSE TO THE GODDAMNED ORIOLES” threads.

By the way

I think this is an overreaction. It is a knee jerk reaction to feel the coming losing streak as it was expected of this team, but we ran into a very, very hot Devil Rays team. They’ve won 8 of 9 or some shit. Also the O’s were basically still on a road trip as they had to go to Seattle then Chicago then Baltimore then California which is rough, and it is not like 11,000 fans provide any kind of boost.

Every schedule is crazy

The Yankees broadcasters were complaining about it the other day. The White Sox are in the midst of playing 36 games in 36 days. The Red Sox went to three countries to start the season.

huh...

36 games in 36 days. there’s gotta be a doubnleheader in there or that’s some kind of violation of the cba, no?

You're indirectly proving my point

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not stupid, I don’t think that the Orioles will contend this year. However, when the Sox went on that Canada, Japan, and Oakland adventure they started off slow; the Yankees are also playing pretty poorly right now as a possible result of their calendar. No coincidence that the O’s begin to slide as they hit an especially hectic part of their schedule.

ouch...

quoth BP:

The Birds continue to hover above .500 despite being 10th in the league in scoring and 11th in run prevention. Their defense has something to do with it; the Orioles are the league’s most efficient unit-trading Miguel Tejada hasn’t hurt them in that respect-but it’s unikely they can continue to hold hitters to a .261 BABIP. Coupled with a pitching staff that’s 12th in both strikeout rate and strikeout/walk ratio, this team is just begging for a correction to come home to roost.
