a brief fanpost in which we suggest new subjects for "this or that"...
so, i think this is sort of an amusing feature, but i can tell from comparing some posts here, to my own game experiences this season that the o's video staff hasn't really put a lot of effort into it on the production end. maybe we've just seen a "trial run" akin to the abortive "bruce chen's joke of the day" feature and more are in production, but in the event this is not the case, what burning issues of the day would YOU like to see hashed out on the fancy, new gigantor screen at OPACY?

but wondering what the best country station is is a valid laugher, since there are 10,000 classic rock stations but apparently no interest in a classic country station that doesn’t play Tim McGraw and Martina McBride and the “country music” of Shania Twain.

maybe because
elvis ripped his songs off from (mostly) dead jazz artisits while the beatles for all intents and purposes created modern rock & roll and are MUCH more of an influence today than elvis, except for all the sexuality in modern videos. that part you can credit to elvis for being the first.

the Beatles became famous because of all the early stuff which was crib’d from others’ work.
But the Beatles became The Beatles because of their relentless originality, excellent musicianship, and passionate group dynamics which pushed them all to greatness (while eventually leading to their demise.

Stones are a fantistic blues band
Beggar’s Banquet? Outstanding. Let It Bleed? Brilliant. But when they tried to branch out, eh, not so much.
Their Satanic Majesty’s Request was an attempt to answer Sgt. Pepper’s… And not for nothing did Lennon offer on Let It Be’s “I Dig A Pony”,
“I-I-I roll a stone
You can imitate everyone you know
Yes you can imitate everyone you know…”
And the less said about the Stones’ disco exploration the better! Look, I’m not knocking them. At their best they certainly match the Beatles. It’s just that I say the Beatles’ ratio of quality material to mediocre material is much better.
Dylan is way too inconsistant for my liking. Sad to say but “below mediocre” doesn’t begin to describe him at his worst.
Hendrix I like fine. But I don’t think guitar playing begins & ends with him. One of those guys I just don’t “get” I guess.

His best song was written by Bob Dylan. He adapted it amazingly and changed it with his guitar, and as a guitarist he was on another planet, but he was nothing special as a songwriter. And the Stones had, what, three good albums?

all along the watchtower is very good, but certainly not his best. i’ll take are you experienced, axis and electric ladlyland for repeated listens over sgt. pepper, abbey road and let it be in a heartbeat.
stones have at least 4 very good records (let it bleed, beggars, sticky fingers, exile) and i think you can make solid cases for several others being at least “good” (aftermath, b/w the buttons, some girls, tattoo you)...and fwiw, i think satanic majesty while kind of ridiculous on the whole has some great songs…sort of like sgt. pepper.

OOOH, tough choice.
I’d go with Slayer, simply due to longevity. And “Raining Blood”.

hmmm
Tough choice, really. I think I go with Pantera by a hair. They never released a bad album. Slayer released a few. And Pantera quit at the right time, probably. Great Southern Trendkill is so wildly overlooked in favor of Vulgar Display, which is maybe their third-best album.
by SC on May 15, 2008 3:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok I'll clarify
The pre-Cowboys from Hell Pantera was quite shit. I don’t really count them, though it’s fair to do so.
by SC on May 15, 2008 3:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The two before Cowboys
don’t count. Not at all. I won’t even download them off BitTorrent – they’re not worth the HD space.
But I’m still going with Slayer – although you are correct, Trendkill is greatly underrated.
If you can find a copy, read “A Vulgar Display of Power,” about the other victims of teh shooting and the shooter. Really good read. E-mail me a snail mail address and if I can find it, I’ll ship my copy to you.

Probably best that you don't
Much of the twentieth century was an artistic wasteland. This is Rauschenberg’s most famous work:

"Whether your name is Gehrig or Ripken, DiMaggio or Robinson, or that of some youngster who picks up his bat or puts on his glove, you are challenged by the game of baseball to do your very best day in and day out. That's all I've ever tried to do."

Rauschenberg was awesome
Twentieth century art may have been pretentious in many cases, but it wasn’t a wasteland. The only difference between Impressionism and mid-20th Century artists (besides all the obvious temporal and geographic ones) was the relative figurative-ness of their art. Both had intellectual pretensions, both were misunderstood/reviled by a majority of their contemporaries inside and outside the art world.
If anything I suppose Rauschenberg and his buddies were less reviled by other artists because the concept of an avant garde was fully entrenched by then. But still.
by pipkin on May 15, 2008 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There was a long fall
between post-impressionism and abstract expressionism. The relative figurativetivenessf the former at least gave paintings a grounding in some kind of objective reality. Once objective reality was let go, it became an “anything goes” phenomenon, where much of what had previously been important – such as the requirement to create a pleasing aesthetic – got tossed out the window. As a result, much crap was created.
There are exceptions, of course. Edward Hopper ignored all the other nonsense going on and was the best painter of the century.
"Whether your name is Gehrig or Ripken, DiMaggio or Robinson, or that of some youngster who picks up his bat or puts on his glove, you are challenged by the game of baseball to do your very best day in and day out. That's all I've ever tried to do."

they're fairly famous 20th century artists
If you don’t care about art, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Within the art world they’re all as recognized as Pollock or Warhol, but their penetration into the mass culture was less complete. Though they all had interesting things to say about that same culture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Knight
“In 1979, Knight was arrested for assaulting a police officer during the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico. Knight was angry that a practice gymnasium was not opened to his team, which went on to a 9-0 record in the tournament. Knight was later convicted in absentia in a Puerto Rican court. However, the charges were later dropped when Indiana Governor Otis R. Bowen refused to cooperate in extraditing Knight to the island commonwealth. “
