Fan Behavior
Admit it, deep down you get a bit of a chuckle out of reading about some red sox fans complaining about their latest visit to Baltimore. Perhaps you don't have to dig very deep. I'm not an advocate of loutish behavior or brawling. I'd like to be able to take my kid to a game and not worry about surrounding crudeness. I avoid taking the family to red sox and yankees games, because that's when it is most likely to erupt. But for this one time, I like to read stories of red sox fans getting an earful, getting a bloody nose, or getting kicked out of OPACY.
I've been to red sox games at OPACY and I've wandered around downtown before such games, without entering the stadium. I've heard the out of towners putting down Lexington Market, and I've heard them chanting how Baltimore sucks. I've seen them yelling about Fenway South and letting the locals know their team sucks (we weren't aware of that fool). At the same time, I've heard Peter Angelos praise them and the stadium cater to them. I know the O's meant to cater to the majority of non-loutish fans. But the louts speak on behalf of the majority, if only because it is their behavior that remains with us. Pete never seemed to realize nor care that the locals took offense to the fact that a bunch of clowns came in to bad mouth the town, the team, and the stadium. MacPhail seems to understand. Anyone recall the Fox game of the week last year where Fox continually played up the "Fenway South" story line and MacPhail sat there like someone peed in his cornflakes? I'm glad to hear the red sox fans got a little punch back in the mouth, particularly on Tuesday. It's an expected release after years of enduring. After working to build up some local good feeling about the team, and it was a simple as having the team actually show some pride and fortitude, I think MacPhail let the locals push back. I'm not sure how long it will continue.
I know it makes me a bit of a hypocrite to laugh at some red sox fan's bloody nose (if one is to believe some reports on the boards). It's really been warranted for far too long, particularly for a fan base that forgot where they came from and have shown little class since 2004. I hope the loutish behavior at OPACY subsides primarily due to the fact that the O's are no longer a humiliation, and there is no reason for some MA punk to come visit full of a misdirected sense of self worth. O's fans ultimately have to reign it in and give the uppity assholes an earful we can all listen to. If they can't listen and instigate some extracurricular activites, take it out onto the concourse so I can watch the game.
Ditto for the yankees fans.

In general I hate boorish fans of any team
The problem when the Red Sox and Yankees fans are in town is that the O’s fans feel like they have to fight back. The best way overall is to out cheer them and hope that the O’s outplay them. But it’s not always possible because the fans of other teams can get downright nasty at times and greater measures have to be taken. I’d be lying if I never told a Yankees fan to shut the fuck up, though I wish I hadn’t had to.
I’d never condone an Orioles fan shouting obscenities at Red Sox fans unprovoked. That’s what the guy on SOSH said was happening and if so, totally inappropriate. But I think what is probably going on is the O’s fans are SO tired of the years of abuse that some of them go to the park looking for a fight.
You just go and cheer your ass off for your team and if the other fans begin behaving inappropriately (and I include chanting Let’s Go Red Sox in being inappropriate), then you handle it on a case by case basis.
And for the record I was at the game on Tuesday night and while there was a lot of cheering and such in my section, nothing happened near me that I would have been embarassed to have my 10 year old niece near. Although I did have some friends in the LF upper deck and they said it was pretty rowdy over there.

Some of the highlights from SOSH
The Baltimore fans were really terrible and the city itself is a shithole. CNNSI ranking Camden 5th for nicest area surrounding the ballpark is a farse … I might advise against bringing the kids to Camden in the future unless you’re in a luxury box or packing heat. The ballpark itself is great, though. It’s like the eye of a category 5 hurricane
I’ve taken my kids to Camden Yards about 25 times in the past several years – day and night. The neighborhoods in the immediate vicinity are fine. You are over-reacting to a lousy game.
You would not have wanted your kids sitting in my section, I can tell you that. Unless you wanted them learning words like “f-cking faggot” and “c-nt.” We weren’t the ones being yelled at, but the people who were were minding their own business and doing nothing but “Let’s go Red Sox” chants. They also happened to be sitting right behind us, so it was getting screamed directly into our ears. It was fans of all ages too, not just your typical drunken college kids. Although there were plenty of them, too. Our section alone, which was pretty small, had probably 4 or 5 small groups band together all hammered and spewing that language. It wasn’t much better on the way out. “Boston is a sh-thole,” “F-ck you faggots back to Boston,” “Belicheat is a c-nt.” There were a lot of people like this too, not just a few kids pissing in the punch bowl. We passed about 4 spots where people had just pulled over and were yelling this garbage.
I’ve been down there a handful of times before this season, and even from watching TV last night I could see that the O’s fans seemed to have a bit more of an edge to them than usual. Boston sports fans are probably the most hated fans in America right now, and witnessing your stadium being sacked by opposing fans for 5 years adds gasoline to the bitterness. The team jumped to a surprising start this season. However, it’s hard to see them staying in contention. Once the team starts losing, Camden Yards will quiet down and once again become “Fenway South” for future road trips.
Having been to Baltimore many times over the years, they are generally great fans. But last night it was ugly all around. People yelling and screaming at the Sox fans on the way into the stadium, during the game in our section, and every section, fights breaking out in several sections.
Some of the language in our section last night made me think I was in Philadelphia.
I’ll also chip in by saying the O’s fans were atypically fired up and, in some cases, inappropriate last night. There was a couple right behind us that was just being belligerently drunk and annoying, screaming “siddown, fatass!!!” at Papi everytime he made an out. When Manny grounded into the double play they screamed right into my ear and I literally had to turn around and tell them to tone it down, as it’s only May. It seemed like this was happening in every section based on what other Sox fans were telling me.
Oh, no, O’s fans were being INAPPROPRIATE!

And one last one....
Red Sox fans better get ready for verbal abuse when the Sox lose. I don’t think there is any way around it..
When you are perceived as the top dog, screams happen. It’s all fun and games until Ortiz gets called a fatass

Red Sox aren't our rival; I just hate them
Hilarious comments. Red Sox fans need to remove themselves from the situation and realize that they have become the same as Yankee fans. Entitled assholes who feel that the rest of the league should bow down for them every time they are lucky to be graced with a visit from the Red Sox.
I was at the game Wednesday afternoon in the bleachers and I didn’t notice any altercations between red sox fans and oriole fans. In fact, a group of BoSox fans were sitting directly behind me. They weren’t being annoying, other than cheering loudly when the red sox were ahead. But then once Jay Payton blasted the granny, they were quiet the rest of the game. I made sure to cheer EXTRA hard during the ninth.

Not to nitpick
But I really think the Red Sox fans (in general) have become far worse than the Yankee fans ever were. Yankee fans were actually somewhat realistic. Maybe it’s been so long since they’ve won the WS, I’ve actually forgotten how bad Yank fans were.

I agree completely
You gotta think that years of first-round playoff exits from teams that were heralded as perennial world champions has humbled the yankee fans a bit. Boston fans have stepped in to fill their place.

Yup
Used to be Yankee fans were worse. But I went to a Yankee game last year, after years of avoiding them, but going to a few Red Sox games. I remember thinking the Yankee fans weren’t really that bad, in comparison.
That didn’t stop me from having loud conversations about how the Red Sox and the Yankees are basically interchangeable.

Here's another fine example from SoSH:
Just got back from the game. Great seats, but the Sox ruined my fucking night along with the obnoxious Orioles fans around me. They fucking screamed their heads off like it was a playoff game. Have some fucking pride.
Man, Orioles fans screaming and yelling at their home stadium?!? How dare they!

I guess
they’re upset because we failed to recognize the inherent superiority of their team. As ours was seeping theirs.

Also
Red Sox fans are currently the ultimate bandwagon fans, so they don’t recognize what it’s like to actually care about your team for the long-term.
I get a kick out of Boston fans putting down the city of Baltimore and Orioles fans. Boston ain’t some great shakes itself, and Boston fans have long been known as a bunch of racist jerks.

I hate "inappropriate" fans
i used to go to a sox-o’s game every year because i LIKED their fans. Someone to jaw about hating the yanks with. but call camden fenway south for 5 years and shits gonna happen. you think if they called fenway “yankee stadium north” that the sox fans would take it and like it?
if you dont want to deal with the abuse, then ya probably shouldnt spout off. the kid that gets picked on the most is usually the one that hits back the hardest.

Really good thread, guys
I went to a Sox-OPACY game two years ago, and I probably won’t go to another Sox/Yankees game for a while. Besides how can anybody say Baltimore is shitty (which it most definitely is not) when the Sox and Yankees play in the same league as Cleveland. Cleveland is an embarassment. Cleveland really sucks: boring as hell. Worse than St. Louis, easily. God, I hate Cleveland.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

man
Listen. I say this every time so none of the delicate sensibility Red Sox fans have a fit and start crying the way they did for 86 years—I know some great, wonderful Red Sox fans. Truly excellent baseball fans, knowledgable and passionate and super people.
If they can’t see where this is coming from, it speaks volumes about them. And it has nothing to do with their team being good. I openly rooted for the Red Sox as an adopted band of brothers in 2004—it was glorious what they did. But the bandwagoneers they’ve picked up have been a scourge on their entire fanbase.
I cannot and will not condone behavior some of the people are reporting back, though. Fights are idiotic wastes of time and tell a story about both sides of the altercation in 99.9999% of all cases. Shitty fans, shitty people. All that “faggot” talk is for garbage human beings. Honestly, if you can’t think of something more creative than “you’re a homosexual, which is bad!” you have some serious issues and are probably an asshole, and I don’t care what hat you’re wearing.
But David Ortiz being called “fatass” is just what it is, typical trash talk.
And as for the stupidest comment of all of them:
Just got back from the game. Great seats, but the Sox ruined my fucking night along with the obnoxious Orioles fans around me. They fucking screamed their heads off like it was a playoff game. Have some fucking pride.
Yes, and next time you’re all at Camden Yards, if you beat the Orioles, please sit quietly and don’t chant or have any fun with your team winning or do anything of that nature. It’s just the Orioles. Have some fucking pride.
That comment in itself pretty much sums up exactly why we hate you, Red Sox “Nation.” And I know not all of you think like that.
