Gameday Thread: Nationals (18-25) @ O's (22-19)

Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles, May 17, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

K2v45oup_medium Fqmvjsdf_medium

Today's Starting Pitchers GS IP ERA WHIP BAA BB K W-L
Odalis Perez - LH 9 51.0 3.71 1.43 .268 20 39 1-3
Brian Burres - LH 7 (8) 42.2 3.59 1.41 .268 16 21 3-4

Perez was an All-Star back in 2002 for the Dodgers, but has really tanked the last couple seasons between Los Angeles and Kansas City. He was originally a Brave and was traded to LA with Brian Jordan and Andrew Brown for Gary Sheffield. Good trade by Atlanta.

Burres has had a nice season so far. He's treading thin ice with his ERA, but he's getting the job done and keeping things competitive. You can't ask for more of a fifth starter than that. He's been a very pleasant surprise.

Go O's!

I’m in a pretty shitty mood, considering the plans I had tonight completely fell through when I went to my car this afternoon to find that someone had tried to steal it. They were unsuccessful, but rendered it completely undriveable. So now here I am, NOT doing what I was supposed be doing tonight, and having to deal with getting my car fixed. So it would improve my mood considerably if the O’s give the Nats a good old fashioned ass kicking tonight.

Dude, that sucks.

Maybe you can sic Luke Scott on the perpetrators for some country justice.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."

You might want to come up with some new material.

When players respect the game. Some players don’t.

I know just because he wears an Orioles uniform it means he can do nothing wrong.

by dtuck81 on May 17, 2008 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

That would require running hard and living up to his full potential. It’s a waste for someone with the talent he has to not use it all the time. Is everyone here a blind homer or what?

You are so full of shit

Like, 100% full of shit. But I shall ignore you from now on, because I thought you were an O’s fan who hated Brian Roberts and therefore some sort of creature to be studied, but it turns out you’re just a Yankee fans troll.

I know I said I'm ignoring you

but I can’t let this go. I don’t want people stumbling in here and thinking you know what you’re talking about.

Nick has 37 Ks so far this year. Last year by May 17th he had 32. Not too much of a difference.

Actually

He’s tied for 7th in the AL for the most strikeouts.

by dtuck81 on May 17, 2008 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do think Nick strikes out a lot

I just don’t think that he’s striking out a “ton” more than last year when he had “protection.” That was your assertion.

Fair enough

I think generally speaking Tejada was more than Millar/Huff/whoever this year, but either way.

This is on Yahoo Sports:

May 13 Markakis has hit a rough spot and is hitless in his last 10 at-bats with six strikeouts.
Recommendation: Markakis tried all day to break his slump, but still wound up with two more strikeouts, something he has been doing at a glaring rate this season. He may be suffering from the loss of Miguel Tejada’s protection more than most originally thought he would.

by dtuck81 on May 17, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he's been affected for sure

Just look at his walk #s. But as far as the K’s, he was on a similiar pace at the beginning of last year. He gets stronger as the year goes on.

You'd hope so

I’m not saying it’s gloom and doom, just a bit disappointed that 67 times (37Ks and 30 walks) the ball isn’t being put into play.

I was a little disappointed with the crowd last night, although the weather was pretty crappy.

Speaking of disappointed, did you know that on college night you can only buy one beer per transaction and there are no beer vendors in the upper decks? I suppose they’re trying to keep the underage drinking to a minimum but it’s super annoying.

Hey Exponats! You just lost a series at OPACY, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Not like last year, when we were humiliated at home by these AAA doofs. How come we haven’t traded Fahey to them for, um, I dunno, Demitrious the Fat Gladiator or somebody? Anyway, thx Brian, good QC. And once again, nice to see people hitting (just) enough and spot-pitching strategically to get us through—this was another W that could easily have been, um, that other thing.

Guts tonight, and I get to watch—just as Russia vs. Canada comes on TV in the hockey finals, too. An embarrassment of riches!

Go Canada, we love ya! (Or as the sign at Niagara Falls says, “Welcome to Canada. Tecinically, another country.”)

How long can this team keep winning with that offense, btw? After Roberts and Markakis it is freakin’ dismal. Cintron batting .800 though! Woo! Between him and Bynum maybe we’ll have something resembling a SS.
