Gameday Thread: Nationals (18-25) @ O's (22-19)
Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles, May 17, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
| Today's Starting Pitchers | GS | IP | ERA | WHIP | BAA | BB | K | W-L | |

Odalis Perez - LH | 9 | 51.0 | 3.71 | 1.43 | .268 | 20 | 39 | 1-3 |

Brian Burres - LH | 7 (8) | 42.2 | 3.59 | 1.41 | .268 | 16 | 21 | 3-4 |
Perez was an All-Star back in 2002 for the Dodgers, but has really tanked the last couple seasons between Los Angeles and Kansas City. He was originally a Brave and was traded to LA with Brian Jordan and Andrew Brown for Gary Sheffield. Good trade by Atlanta.
Burres has had a nice season so far. He's treading thin ice with his ERA, but he's getting the job done and keeping things competitive. You can't ask for more of a fifth starter than that. He's been a very pleasant surprise.

Go O's!
I’m in a pretty shitty mood, considering the plans I had tonight completely fell through when I went to my car this afternoon to find that someone had tried to steal it. They were unsuccessful, but rendered it completely undriveable. So now here I am, NOT doing what I was supposed be doing tonight, and having to deal with getting my car fixed. So it would improve my mood considerably if the O’s give the Nats a good old fashioned ass kicking tonight.
"We’re not concerned about what other teams think. I know teams come in here thinking we’re playing the Orioles. And then 9 innings later, they got the loss, they know what we’re about." ~Adam Jones
Dude, that sucks.
Maybe you can sic Luke Scott on the perpetrators for some country justice.
"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."
God knows he'd be more effective than the Baltimore City Police

Dude your rhetoric is getting so old
You might want to come up with some new material.

I like
When players respect the game. Some players don’t.
I know just because he wears an Orioles uniform it means he can do nothing wrong.
You are so full of shit
Like, 100% full of shit. But I shall ignore you from now on, because I thought you were an O’s fan who hated Brian Roberts and therefore some sort of creature to be studied, but it turns out you’re just a Yankee fans troll.

Ah Wily Mo
looks like he has been up to his old tricks. Come on Nick!

Nice hit, Nicky!

nick v lefties
I like how Nick continues to improve off lefties. I remember i thought we should platoon him his rookie year. Good thing i’m not in charge…
Librarians are hiding something
I know I said I'm ignoring you
but I can’t let this go. I don’t want people stumbling in here and thinking you know what you’re talking about.
Nick has 37 Ks so far this year. Last year by May 17th he had 32. Not too much of a difference.

I do think Nick strikes out a lot
I just don’t think that he’s striking out a “ton” more than last year when he had “protection.” That was your assertion.

Fair enough
I think generally speaking Tejada was more than Millar/Huff/whoever this year, but either way.
This is on Yahoo Sports:
May 13 Markakis has hit a rough spot and is hitless in his last 10 at-bats with six strikeouts.
Recommendation: Markakis tried all day to break his slump, but still wound up with two more strikeouts, something he has been doing at a glaring rate this season. He may be suffering from the loss of Miguel Tejada’s protection more than most originally thought he would.
I think he's been affected for sure
Just look at his walk #s. But as far as the K’s, he was on a similiar pace at the beginning of last year. He gets stronger as the year goes on.

You'd hope so
I’m not saying it’s gloom and doom, just a bit disappointed that 67 times (37Ks and 30 walks) the ball isn’t being put into play.
let me guess...
I stupid for a number 3 hitter to take walks and therefore should never take walks as a number 3 hitter?

aubrey with the walk...
It’s strange that he hasn’t been sucking like he normally does in the first half

this “aggresive” running shit is driving me bonkers.

Wily Mo is funny
I mean, not that he could have gotten to that, but seeing him lumber around the outfield makes me laugh.

Steve Kline
Is with the IronPigs. He was on MASN the other day (Tides/IronPigs) and looks like John Daly’s stunt double.
the Nats are awesome
I’m so jealous of such a hot new commodity. Folks are just flocking around these guys. They RULE!
y'know
The commentary with all these guys together has been a blast the last two days. They’re having a good damn time up there.
I'm enjoying them tonight for sure
And on a shallow note, I looked up their ages and Jim and Don are the same age. Obviously Don hasn’t been to see Palmer’s surgeon.

Crowley
Does Palmer get royalties everytime he says “Terry Crowley”? That’s like 6 times tonight he’s mentioned him.
Uh
Jones thought he was out and made a turn to go to centerfield. He tried to get back to first and got tagged out.
I love Don Sutton and Jim Palmer
They’ll be making out any time now

my money is on Gary
he’s so drunk he won’t know the difference.
"We’re not concerned about what other teams think. I know teams come in here thinking we’re playing the Orioles. And then 9 innings later, they got the loss, they know what we’re about." ~Adam Jones
I'm shocked
He didn’t just take off since he’s leaving for the ESPN Radio (I think?) tomorrow.
Oh, and he’s not s-faced when he comes back.
HOW did Gary just pronounce Guzman?
Gutenman? Gu-(sip)-Man?

Looks like a good crowd tonight
I was a little disappointed with the crowd last night, although the weather was pretty crappy.
Speaking of disappointed, did you know that on college night you can only buy one beer per transaction and there are no beer vendors in the upper decks? I suppose they’re trying to keep the underage drinking to a minimum but it’s super annoying.

4 opportunities to get out #3..
that’s pretty sad.
oh come on!

This is not the ass kicking I hoped for.

Some people ask me what I do during winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do, I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Roger Hornsby
last night when he came in
It was to some hard rock sounding song, but I don’t know if that’s his regular song and I also couldn’t identify it. So basically I’m no help at all.
I can tell you that Adam Jones at bat music is Lollipop by Lil’ Wayne. At least it was last night.

Go O's
Squeaking out another W.
I’ve been wearing the lesser (slightly more ill fitting) ‘66 O’s cap for about 8 days now. I picked it up because of a rainy day so as to save my favorite ‘66 cap. I can’t change it.
Hey Exponats! You just lost a series at OPACY, hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Not like last year, when we were humiliated at home by these AAA doofs. How come we haven’t traded Fahey to them for, um, I dunno, Demitrious the Fat Gladiator or somebody? Anyway, thx Brian, good QC. And once again, nice to see people hitting (just) enough and spot-pitching strategically to get us through—this was another W that could easily have been, um, that other thing.
Guts tonight, and I get to watch—just as Russia vs. Canada comes on TV in the hockey finals, too. An embarrassment of riches!
Go Canada, we love ya! (Or as the sign at Niagara Falls says, “Welcome to Canada. Tecinically, another country.”)
Go O’s vs. Nats (technically not Canadian, although DC could still be charged with receiving stolen property)!
And the This vs. That marathon continues…
Canada vs. Russia
Rocky vs. Drago
Stallone vs. English
Palmer vs. Enjoyable silence
National League vs. Mexican National League

Being 4 games over .500 with our hitting numbers is more than Birdland.
It is Voodoo Birdland.

Beating the piss out of the Expos is Birdland.
Made it to my first game of the year tonight, with my bro in from London and my father in law attending his first ever MLB game at age 60.
How long can this team keep winning with that offense, btw? After Roberts and Markakis it is freakin’ dismal. Cintron batting .800 though! Woo! Between him and Bynum maybe we’ll have something resembling a SS.
