Gameday Thread: O's (16-18) @ Royals (15-18)
Baltimore Orioles @ Kansas City Royals

Luke Hochevar - RH | 3 | 16.2 | 4.86 | 1.62 | .273 | 9 | 14 | 2-1 |
Hochevar was the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft. He's a Scott Boras kid, stands 6'5", has a big heater, and has been compared to Kevin Brown, which hopefully just means his pitching.
Cabrera is taller. Thus, I conclude he is better. Win!
Game time is 8:10 on MASN.

Hochevar is currently sporting a 1.62 WHIP, .273 BAA. He’s young with 4 career starts under his belt. Given the O’s past success with youngsters I smell a big night for Luke.

You guys are overreacting
The O’s have been spectacularly boneheaded as of late. The trend has to curtail at some point. I say they make at most one “Diamond Dave agressive out” tonight.

So you’re not arguing that he is in any way beneficial to the Royals right now, right? And that he’d have to be HISTORICALLY EXCELLENT to hit like he did last year and be a true help to any team beyond “pinch runner!” or “defensive replacement!”

no, i'm arguing that his glove is valuable, right now
But if his VORP is -7.6, then clearly his glove isn’t outweighing his offense.

Belanger and Davey Concepcion. The importance of both is greatly overstated. The same probably goes for Ozzie, who was better than either of them.

Cano is hitting .160/.216/.256
Tony isn’t going to hit that bad all year.
He will still be one of the worst hitter in the major leagues though.
He’s only a smidge better than Luis, but at least he can back his glove rep up.

VORP is offense only, actually
It’s adjusted based on the position you play, but it doesn’t give credit for being above average defensively.
I think we all fundamentally agree here, though.
Tony Pena is one of the worst starting shortstops in the majors.
Luis Hernandez is worse than Tony Pena.

A request?
At some point, can you post a FAQ on why the hell I should care about these stats? I’m not being sarcastic, but VORP is still kind of a foreign concept to me. I feel like Brad Pitt in Fight Club
“No, I didn’t quite catch that Lou. Still not quite getting it. Ah, ok ok ok, I got it, I got it, I got it. Shit I lost it.”

oops, sorry I thought VORP accounted for defense
I thought I remember Rob Neyer saying if he had to only look at one statistic, he would look at VORP because it accounts for both offense and defensive contributions (not just adjustments), maybe he said it was another stat or I’m misremembering what he said.

WARP?
That’s Baseball Prospectus’s stat that includes defensive contributions.
I personally don’t like WARP because Baseball Prospectus has pretty bad defensive stats, and WARP gives too much credit for defense.
I think the best thing to do is take VORP and mentally add runs above/below average. If Pena is +10 at shortstop, then he’s just above replacement overall.

that might have been it
I think it was one of those 4 letter acronymns. But yeah, I like what you said, Tony Jr is a touch better than Luis. Luis was suppose to bring strong defense with a weak bat. At least Tony Jr. brings his glove.
