They had all their sisters with them

Pir79pin_medium

They were Family.

Stargell and Parker and Garner. Blyleven and Candelaria and Tekulve.

It was a simpler time. A more polyester time. Kramer vs. Kramer was the No. 1 movie.

1979 was stupid. The Pirates are stupider.

It all begins...again.

The unis?

White buttondowns tonight, or the classic orange pullover?

They SO have to rock the orange unis

at least once this series.

Absolutely

Man, I hated that team. Except Tekulve. He was too dorky to hate. I mean, look at him! How can you hate a guy that looks like that and is a MLB pitcher? It’s like your CPA gets a contract with the Celtics or something…

Pirates vs. Orioles

That was the first World Series that I had any memory of although it was before I rooted for the Orioles or lived in the Baltimore area. At the time I really liked Dave Parker and Willie Stargell and I liked the Pirates hats and stars on their hats.

My best friend is still pissed about that series. He hates “We Are Family” and gets mad whenever he thinks about Kent Tekulve

The 1979 Series is also the most chromatically assaultive World Series in history since the Orioles wore their orange jerseys during games when the Pirates wore their yellow jerseys.

Bad Uniforms

I don’t mind the bright polyester uniforms, but I do mind the stupid stirrup thingy they wore back then – an elastic ring that went around the player’s calf under his pants with a piece of fabric attached to it that he looped around the bottom of his foot that Mr. Tekulve is modeling above.

It was a stupid exaggeration of the the colored outer sock which originally didn’t reveal any of the stirrup at all and gradually became only the stirrup. I’m not nuts about the stupid baggy long pants of today, but they are an improvement over that.

Get off my lawn....

I was 11 when the Pirates and their coked-up outfielders stole that WS from my beloved O’s. I already hated disco, but ABC pushing THAT DAMN SONG, I think, in some small way, made me the metal head I am today. I mean, in 1979, I was down with Billy Joel and the Bee Gees. After that WS, never again. I was listening to AC/DC’s Back in Black & Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap within a year, and had my first Motley Crue cassette by 1983.

I blame it all on Willie Stargell.

only the Orioles

can find a way to celebrate losing a World Series from being up 3 gams to 1. i HATE the Pirates, i HATE Pittsburgh, and i HATE Sister Sledge all because of 1979. man, do i have a lot of hate. effing Pirates. jeezus, the though of losing those games back then still makes my skin crawl. and seeing Willie Stargell dance to “We Are Fam-i-lee”? the worst. i can see it like it was yesterday.

ugh.

I can't muster up any ill will

As a kid, I did not like the Pirates. They always battled the Reds, and then there were those World Series against the O’s. In the end, all these teams got their share of wins, so it all evened out.

Now the Pirates are brothers with the O’s in the pathetic franchise club. I just can’t muster up any animosity.

Screw the Pirates

Coked-up bastards ended up getting what was comin’ to ‘em. And Bonds never winning a pennant while there was even that much more delicious to watch.

Learn from your elders, people. The Pirates can go to hell for all eternity.

it's sort of funny...

i don’t really remember those times very well as i was a wee lad, but, man…looking back at pics of the times…everybody looked like a coke dealer back then? of course, w/ the pirates, many of them probably were or at least spent so much time w/ those cats that they picked up some of their traits. al that coke in the clubhouse and pops stargell was STILL a, uhh, big fella.

It was the Cheese Ball Fashion Series, all right. But think of the context:

For 7 mos. of 1978-79, I had to explain to Russian visitors at a U.S. cultural exchange exhibition here just how the country that gave them and the world Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and so on had come to a point where its most popular musical group was the Village People.

I don’t think many visitors bought it. Who can blame them? I ddn’t buy it. Thank God the 70’s ended.

the first time the Orioles broke my heart....

...was 1979.

I hated kent tekulve, probably because he was so effective and he showed no emotion ever, and he had a weird delivery, and i thought he was an unfair secret weapon compared to tippy martinez.

i REALLY hated willy stargel’s wife, who blew a referee’s whistle in the stands all night so he could hear her on the field. a bunch of her gal pals in the wives’ section did the same thing eventually, and i thought it was poor sportsmanship…like bringing an airhorn to the game.

i hated the pirates for having cool retro hats. how come they got the cool hats and we didn’t?

did i really watch us go up 3-1 and then lose? yes i did. and i cried at the time.

by zknower on Jun 13, 2008 10:58 AM EDT   0 recs

My best friend felt the same way

In his mind Kent Tekulve was this weird-looking guy he’d never heard of who meant the game was over whenever he entered the game.

Hey, didja know

That Roch’s still bitter about the 1979 Series? He may have mentioned it once or twice on his blog.

In all seriousness, I (like SC) was born in 1982. But when I was still impressionable, my parents instilled in me an abiding hate for black and yellow polyester and f’ing Sister Sledge. I wish I could be there tonight to see Earl and Doug DeCinces, but they’ll just have to sweep those Pirates without me.

If you consider this to be a jinx, kindly get a grip.

I went to Game One of that series

It snowed. DeCinces hit a homerun. II don’t remember how I got home (thankfully, I was not driving). I was so hungover the next day that I missed two days of work. If I ever see another picture of Omar Moreno and his skanky wife with that whistle, I will puke, just as I did that morning.
Omar Fucking Moreno.
Oh god….such bad memories.
(On a lighter note, I think that was the year Wild Bill Hagy began doing his dugout-top routine at Memorial Stadium).

by Lothar on Jun 13, 2008 2:23 PM EDT   0 recs

I went to game 2.

Although the O’s didn’t hit for shit, in my eyes, Stanhouse blew the game! I never liked Don Stanhouse the baseball player since.

Yeah, O-R-I-O-L-E-S was in full tilt by then. I never heard it so loudly. Same for the Ed-die chant.

And now some words from Bucs fans

“Anyone else in the area attending the game? I am sure the ignorant Ravens fans will be ever present to offer some kind words of encouragement to me this Saturday night. I will just have to politely remind them of the 2 times the Pirates beat them during the WS.”

“I am bringing my son and a few of his friends down for tomorrow’s game. I’ll get them to .500….you put them over the top. Friday is a celebration of the ‘79 team. I hope to remind a few Balti-morons how that year finished up. Have an Old German for me…I don’t think they will have any Arn City.”

I try not to bring a rivalry from football over to baseball, but I just cannot stand anyone who even mildly supports the Pittsburgh Steelers. I whole heartedly believe that their fan base are not only rednecks at the lowest level, but it runs all the way through to the “high class” Steelers fans.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
