Just can't help piling on Bedard

Larry Stone of the Seattle Times quotes Mariners manager John McLaren on Erik Bedard :

"I think that's basically what he is,'' McLaren said. "That's the way he was in Baltimore. Basically, he's programmed to go 100 pitches.

"There's not an easy way to put it. I'd love to see him go further, but if he's not capable, he's not capable....There's no use dwelling on it. It is what it is. He's a 100-pitch pitcher."

A pain that O's fans know all too well. Talk about selling high on a guy. It's also worth noting that the genius who brought Bedard to Seattle, M's GM Bill Bavasi, was fired today. Of course, that Bedard trade was the least of his problems. Trading Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez, counting on beat-down, power-deficient Jose Vidro as an everyday DH, paying top dollar for Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn, Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson...eugh. This guy made Mike Flanagan look like John Schuerholtz.

Bedard will probably be the goat

But like you said, there is so much more wrong with the Mariners than Erik Bedard.

I thought the “100 pitch pitcher” line was pretty interesting, so I looked up his stats. In his 12 starts this year, he has pitched over 100 on 6 of them, although it’s usually between 100-110. In fact, 110 is the most pitches he’s thrown all year. Last year he made 28 starts, and he pitched over 100 pitches in 21 of them (75%). He did go deeper last year, though, throwing greater than 110 pitches 10 times, the most being 120. For comparison’s sake, since Erik was obtained by Seattle to be their “ace,” here are some stats on other teams aces (2007 season).

Boston: In 30 starts, Josh Beckett pitched greater than 100 pitches in 20 of them (67%) . He pitched greater than 110 pitches in 10 starts, and the most in one game was 118 (once).

Cleveland: In 34 starts, C.C. Sabathia pitched greater than 100 pitches in 27 of them (79%). He pitched greater than 110 pitches in 8 times, most in one game 119 (twice)

Tampa Bay: In 34 starts, Scott Kazmir pitched greater than 100 pitches in 26 of them (76%). He pitched greater than 110 pitches 11 times, most in one game 118.

Obviously there is a lot more to being a good pitcher but pitch counts, but since that’s what the M’s manager focused on, there you go. Bedard seems to be pretty much in line with a lot of other good pitchers. Not many pitchers are out there throwing 120-130 pitches on a regular basis anymore.

There's a great article

over at Lookout Landing (originally from USS Mariner, I think) chronicling the many stupid moves of Bill Bavasi and co. There are about five or six entries, and they don’t even include the Bedard trade. And we thought we had it bad in Baltimore…

So.. any chance we can get him back...

cheaply?

Not likely

I thought that was a bit dickish on his part not wanting to resign here.

Too bad. He was my favorite pitcher to watch in years.

F that

Dickish? Would you want to stay in Baltimore if you were Erik Bedard? Rebuilding and all that. I wouldn’t re-sign either. Dude did work and there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

But I might be clouded by the fact that I was really happy with the package we got back. Even when Adam Jones is slumping, I love that dude. What a guy.

Who are you kidding?

You’d turn down a huge sum of money to play for the Orioles?

I don’t blame Bedard for not wanting to re-sign, though. He’s the best pitcher the Orioles have had since Mussina. If he’s looking to sign a medium term contract after he becomes a free agent next year, I hope the Orioles take a shot at him.

If I can get as large a pile of money

from a team that has a higher chance of winning and I didn’t grow up as an O’s fan? Sure! He’s Canadian – not inherent reason to stay in B-More. Everyone and his brother thought SEA would win the AL West. I’m sure he didn’t see much of a downside.

what?

everybody and their brother, EXCEPT…

seems to me most people here and on the parallel m’s board thought the m’s were NOT going to contend this year. in fact, bavasi might be one of the people that DID think the m’s would contend this year!

I don't think it was such a unanamious opinion that they were going to be good

It was pointed out quite widely that the Mariners vastly outplayed their run differential in 2007; and that despite their record, they weren’t that good.

I could be wrong, but I think Baseball Prospectus had them around 72 wins.

He dissed my team

I reserve the right to be bitter about it.

I have no respect for Bedard ever since......

he acted like a fucking pussy, faking an injury so that he wouldn’t have to pitch against us.

Maybe i'm a bit naive

But I think that might be too much reading into it, but then again i could be wrong.

YOU HAVE TO READ THIS
I asked Bavasi on Monday about Bedard’s pitch-count threshold. After bouncing between defending and explaining Bedard, the axed GM — clearly exasperated — said I needed to ask the pitcher.

"You gotta ask him," Bavasi said. "You gotta ask him. Good luck. And he’s gonna have some stupid answer, some dumbass answer."

From all indications, Bavasi is pretty nice guy. I imagine the frustration of being fired led him to say this rather mean spirited quote. Bedard must be livid. I’m sure operation shutdown might be on his mind.

I saw that, and laughed.

They’ve got a thread about this over at Lookout Landing, and folks who have seen video of the Bavasi remarks suggest they weren’t mean-spirited. Not sure how that works…

by Brotz13 on Jun 17, 2008 4:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe his intention wasn't mean spirited

But I can’t imagine something like “And he’s gonna have some stupid answer, some dumbass answer,” won’t come off as mean spirited. At this point, I’m sure Bedard is counting the seconds before he leaves. I just wonder if he’ll start mailing it in just to spite the M’s.

Bedard doesn't get livid

The man has ice water in his veins. Thats why he was always so cool on the mound.

if cheap enough, I’ll take that motherfucker back.

well, the season's young...

but over the first couple months, he’s looking more like 2006 bedard, healthy 2005 bedard than 2007 bedard.
