So uhh... are we booing Miggi or what?

I'm going tonight and I'm kind of torn. I loved loved loved Tejada during his first 2 years here, but then he went and ruined that all with some pissing and moaning, not running out ground balls, and you know ... completely losing all ability to field his position...

That being said, I don't blame him fully because when he came to Baltimore it was with super duper promises from Flanabeattigan to all the fans that we're going to get good players and we're going to go hard for Vlad Guerrero and we're going to be good enough, we're smart enough, and doggone it, PEOPLE LIKE ME!

But none of that ever happened, and instead of Guerrero we got Javy Lopez, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, Ramon Hernandez, Kevin Millar, Aubrey Huff............

So I think I'll politely cheer for Miggi. Nothing raucous, just a nice little applause. Does anyone violently disagree? I can still be swayed!

I will be there

And I’ll be cheering. He was our best player when he was here, and we got a handful of players for him that are useful now and might be useful in the near future. Sure, he pouted and dogged it when the team stunk, but let’s be honest. It’s been depressing and frustrating to follow the teams that Flanattiequette put on the field…could it be any less frustrating to play with those guys?

Besides, Miggy complained about the front office, but I never heard him rip the fans. I say we take the high road. Save your venom for the asswipes who really deserve it, like Sidney, after he signs with Seattle.

I think he took the high road in his quote about coming back.

His beef was with the front office. The fans wanted the same thing he did. When it was clear the O’s weren’t getting better, he ultimately got what he wanted – out of a nutball franchise. Hopefully the O’s got a few useful players in return (and have turned the corner on being nutballs).

Polite applause is fine.

Indifference

"Whether your name is Gehrig or Ripken, DiMaggio or Robinson, or that of some youngster who picks up his bat or puts on his glove, you are challenged by the game of baseball to do your very best day in and day out. That's all I've ever tried to do."

mostly indifferent

But no booing, please. His 150 RBI season was a pleasure to watch. Overall, he played pretty damn well as an Oriole. I have no ill will against Miggy. The losing sapped his spirit. I’d prefer an Adam Jones type of attitude but oh well.

In (sort of) defense of some of the players you mentioned

Javy was good for a couple of seasons, and Ramon’s first year was excellent.

we’re going to go hard for Vlad Guerrero

We did go after hard for Guerrero. We had the highest offer on the table. He wanted to live in an area with Hispanic population though.

They had it a few times after 105.7 became HFS

Although I guess the VirginFest (VirginMobileFest, whatever) has supplanted it.

But didn't he want to be around Dominicans

Not too many Dominicans in SoCal, but If he signs here, he’s 2:45 from New York and more Dominicans than he can shake a stick at.

By the way, he’s not from Cuba, why does he still have a Russian first name.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I hope Tejada gets a hand.

He was a pain in some ways, but it can’t be denied that he was what the O’s paid for: a top tier SS with a great bat and a shaky glove.

Which is kind of foolish...

Huff insulted the city itself. Tejada just got tired of losing and got traded in a deal that was best for everyone.

don't get me wrong...

the guy’s act definitely wore on me, but he’s still one of the most productive players the o’s have had in the last decade and his first three years w/ the o’s were probably the best run of his career. in fact, his average adjusted OPS over those three years comes out at slightly better than that of his MVP year.

but, yeah, good deal for the o’s. stros? don’t think so, but he’s playignat roughly the level he was last year offensively.

People who would still boo Huff

are pretty silly, in my opinion. The dude said a few thoughtless things, but he realized his mistake and he’s pretty much been a model teammate since the season started. If you watch any of his post game interviews he’s continually positive about the club and says all the right things.

OK that's fair

Huff took his medicine, I’d say that’s over now. All I’m saying (as others have above) is that Miggi never trashed the fans or the town. He whined and he dogged it sometimes, and he hit the poop out of the ball for the most part.

How many actually blamed Miggi for the losing...
The Sun-The problem is, he played during the club’s nadir, when fans had become disenchanted and uninterested in the club’s continual fourth-place finishes.

Was that Tejada’s fault?

Absolutely not, he said pre-game. “It had to be unfair [criticism],” Tejada said. “You see what I do every day. I come to the ballpark and play like a champion. And this game is all about pitching.”

Tejada’s not one to rip others – he talked continually about how he loved Baltimore and the fans and his old teammates.

But don’t pin the losing on him. That doesn’t sit well.

“The reason we aren’t winning [in Baltimore] is because we don’t have a team to compete with the Yankees and Boston,” Tejada said. “That’s why [the Orioles] are not winning. ... They have to have a team to compete with those people to be a champion. That’s why we were always in last place. It’s not because of me.”

The next part was the most telling. Tejada posed his own question.

“Are they still in first place now?” Tejada asked about the Orioles. When told they weren’t, that they were in fourth entering last night, Tejada shrugged, as if to say, “Exactly.”

Last I recall, we didn’t pick Miggi up in the 1997 offseason. What happened to actual reporting in the News? I mean who would even pose the question that the losing was his fault? I just don’t get it.

I didn’t get a chance to go the the game, but I would likely have politely applauded and maybe yelled “Thanks Miggi” for the few years of trying to make our club better, but more so for continuing to be decent enough to get us Luke Scott, George Sherrill, Costanzo, Patton, and Albers(right?). So in the end, it worked out well for all involved. Thanks Miggi.

Sarfate, not Sherrill

George was part of the Bedard trade. But you make a good point. I don’t recall anyone blaming Miggi for the losing. There were plenty of other culprits there.
