O's Notes:

  • On Roch's blog he writes "Millar got his hair bleached blonde, except for the back, which is still dark for reasons he doesn't understand. He had no idea it wasn't completely blonde until later." I can't wait to see this.

  • Alex Cintron gets the start over Boom Boom at shortstop. After Boom Boom's 3 pitch strikeout last night I think I saw enough.

  • Adam Loewen is scheduled to pitch tonight for Double-A Bowie. He's only suppose to pitch 2 innings. After tonight Loewen will make 4 more rehab appearances for Bowie and then 1 for Triple-A Norfolk.

I bet Steinbrenner will tell him to “pitch more like Jamie Moyer”.

more on this

Ponson, when the Rangers signed him after his long absence from baseball:

“I needed the break,” Ponson said. “Mentally, I was exhausted. I told my agent not to worry about it, that I was just going to chill and relax. And I needed to get my off-the-field problems taken care of. I didn’t grab a baseball for seven months.”

“Now I’m really energized,” Ponson said. “I’m ready to be back, and I’ve got my joy back in baseball. It’s feeling fun again. And I’m really grateful to the Rangers for giving me this chance.”

Rangers, on his release:

“We’re trying to put together a team of 25 guys pulling together,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “Based on some recent comments, he did not want to be a part of that, and that’s something we’re not going to tolerate. We want guys who want to be here and want to pull for the team, and not guys who are here for their own self-interests.”
...Daniels declined to discuss the specifics and Ponson was unavailable for comment, but team sources said Ponson was put on notice after creating a serious disturbance at the hotel bar in St. Petersburg during the team’s last road trip.

Oops.
He was told that further problems would not be tolerated.

Two more incidents occurred this week. Ponson started with three days’ rest on Wednesday against the Indians and allowed six runs in four innings. Only two were earned because of three errors committed behind him, and Ponson reacted furiously after being taken out. His actions were interpreted as “showing up” his teammates.

The second incident occurred when manager Ron Washington informed Ponson on Thursday that he would be pushed back in his next start so that Kevin Millwood could start Tuesday on his regular four days’ rest. Ponson would have pitched on Wednesday on six days’ rest. Ponson wasn’t happy with that decision and made his feelings clear in a heated discussion with the manager.

Way to go Cashman! Have fun with Sidney! You Yankees are all class.

Sorry, had a softball game

Grudge match against the team that cut my kid in the preseason. We didn’t win, but we played as well as we have all year against the 2nd best team in the league, and ran aggressively. A 14-7 loss felt pretty good tonight – 2 weeks ago, it was 15-0 after 3 innings.

Playoff game Monday

which is, I think, the end of the season for us. Decent pitching, but no hitting. At least we’re pissing parents on the other teams off with our baserunning….

I prefer annoying

Our motto for 3B runners – make them worry more about you than the batter. It pays off….

And parents on other teams hate it when I yell “If she’s in the baseline, run through her – you have a right to the baseline!” and “Run through home plate, and the catcher if you have to.”

I make a lot of friends that way. :)

Jim and Gary

have been talking about bobbleheads for five minutes. Key points:

1) Nick is better looking than his bobblehead
2) Jim felt misrepresented when on a joint bobblehead with Earl because it made them look the same height.

Honestly

The GHIII DLC has been a big disappointment, besides the modern metal pack (Thrice/Deftones/A7X) and the Velvet Revolver pack. Rock Band has been infinitely better (with way more to pick from too). Supposedly there’s a Wii hard drive peripheral in the works so they can get DLC sometime too, though?

Good luck

Advice:

1) Be SURE you like kids

2) Never start drinking while student teaching. You won’;t stop until the bottle’s empty. Trust me on this.

3) Kids can’t think 5 minutes into the future. None of them are worth your mortgage. Whatever you WANt to say to them, don’t. Just smile, talk softly, and send them to the office for people who make a lot more money than you do to deal with. And when a kid yells “Fuck you!” just smile and say “I’d prefer you didn’t.” I’ve yet to have a kid come up with anything in response to that.

4) Don’t back a kid into a corner. Everyone loses. The kid WILL lash back, or hate you forever. Neither is a good outcome. Always give a kid an out, even it’s it’s just walking to the office quietly.

Thanks for the advice

I am pretty sure I like kids, but I get my first chance to observe in a class room this coming semester so that will be a good opportunity to make sure. I’m a pretty patient person so I think I’ll be able to avoid responding to kids who want to cause problems.

Advice number 2 is kind of foreboding haha.

according to Jim Palmer

you have to know how to play the outfield to make that catch.

Also, he says Markakis knows how to play the outfield, so that’s why he made it.

Thanks, Jim!

Smash
Ixnay
Conspiracy
Americana
Ignition
Splinter

The new one currently slots right near Americana somewhere. So yes, I do recommend Conspiracy, it’s got several tracks that are surprisingly back to their punk-rock roots, and most of the experimental tracks are decent too.

It's all preference

Prankster and Pretty Fly and Want You Bad are all well and good, I’d take them over most of the crap on the radio, but I definitely prefer The Offspring’s regular work more. I try not to be a snob about “their old stuff” being the best, because their first two albums were mediocre and there are plenty of good tracks on their recent discs… but I just prefer their real songs to their pop ones.

Trembley's 1st anniversary as manager

goes as most of the wins have this year.

Stock up on teh antacids, DD, and strap in for a decade or so…

For the record

The noise I made when Millar’s hit went into CF was something like “BBBBBEEEAAAAAHHHHH!”

I don't know what mine sounded like

But my dogs looked at me like I was goddamn crazy, so that was probably about it.

Yup, skip, that’s about it.

Trembley on Kevin's hair

“He looks like a box of Crayola crayons…..That’s bad. If there was still a kangaroo court, he’d be banned. That’s bad.”

With that win,

The O’s have two more wins this June than they did all of last June (8-18).

Record after 70 games this year: 36-34
Record after 70 games last year: 29-41

Checking in late...

Had to be at a friend’s daughter’s wedding. Nice to get the win, and sorry to be a downer, but WHY TF CAN’T THESE GUYS SCORE FOR GUTS?!? And while we’re at it, what is with leaving all those guys on base? 2 runs on 10, count ‘em, TEN friggin’ hits? Long term, the only hopeful sign here is Sir Sidney’s return to the MFY. That’s got to be good for us, right??
