Shawn Chacon Chokeslams Houston GM

HOUSTON (AP)—Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon was suspended indefinitely by the team Wednesday for insubordination after reportedly grabbing general manager Ed Wade by the neck and throwing him to the ground.

Yeah, that's not good.  But Chacon's version of events makes it sound even worse.

"I sat down to eat and Ed Wade came to me and very sternly said, ‘You need to come with me to the office,"’ Chacon said. "I said, ‘For what?’ I said, ‘I don’t want to go to the office with you and Cooper.’ And I said, ‘You can tell me whatever you got to tell me right here.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, you want me to tell you right here?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ I’m not yelling. I’m calm."

"He started yelling and cussing," Chacon said of Wade, according to a story on the Chronicle’s Web site. "I’m sitting there and I said to him very calmly, ‘Ed, you need to stop yelling at me. Then I stood up and said, ‘You better stop yelling at me.’ I stood up. He continued and was basically yelling."

Chacon said that after Wade told him he needed to "look in the mirror," it got worse.

"So at that point I lost my cool and I grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground. I jumped on top of him," he said. "Words were exchanged."

Moral of the story - you can yell or cuss at Shawn Chacon.  But don't tell him to look in the mirror.  Because he's a 'roid rage freak who will immediately go from calm talking to performing Big Show-type wrestling moves on you, no matter that you're his boss.

(The Big Show was unavailable for comment.)

"Maybe it shouldn’t have happened," Chacon said. "But when you do those things and you’re yelling at somebody and you’re cussing you better know what type of person you’re dealing with..."

MAYBE it shouldn't have happened?!?  Chacon, you're looking at demotion plus suspension plus you now have a seriously tainted rep.  Plus, I'm not sure how to tell you this, but you're not exactly what people call a "good pitcher".

Good luck with that whole finding work thing.

wow

How funny is it that this idiot is going to hear “look in the mirror” every time he calls a team looking for work?

“Maybe it shouldn’t have happened,” Chacon said. “But when you do those things and you’re yelling at somebody and you’re cussing you better know what type of person you’re dealing with…”

Well he’s either five years old or thinks he’s an ultimate fighter. Either way he’s a moron.

Nah, he's 15

I see it EVERY DAY at school. Kids couldn’t care less they’re failing 4 classes they need to graduate, but how DARE you raise your voice. “My MOTHER don’t even yell at me!”

And my response is always…”Maybe if she did, we wouldn’t have this problem..”

Chacon is an idiot, but...

So is Ed Wade.

Chacon was being insubordinate by refusing to go to the manager’s office. He had just demanded a trade and was clearly in a defiant and agitated state of mind. Naturally, Ed Wade decides the best course of action is to yell and curse at Chacon in the middle of the clubhouse.

Did Wade really think he was going to convince Chacon to come in to the office? Or was he just trying to show that he’s the boss?

Chacon’s career is probably over, but he made a nice pile of money as a ballplayer which will last him the rest of his life if he spends it wisely. It sounds like he made that quick calculation in his head and decided he’d rather play the part of angry moron than submissive employee.

uh...

given the quotes cited above, i’d say that wisdom is not a quality which shawn chacon possesses. not remotely.

I wouldn't call it wisdom

I think every person who has a boss has a general feel for their life situation and knows exactly how much crap they are willing to take before they risk their job.

Of course, when most people reach that threshold, they just quit rather than choke their boss.

Hmm...

Playing armchair psychiatrist, I don’t buy Chacon’s version of events. Why would Wade yell & curse at him to begin with? That’s not GM-type behavior, especially not when you compare it to how Wade handled the situation in front of the press later.

The key to this, really, comes down to one word: “basically”.

“He was basically yelling.”

No, he was either yelling & cursing, or he wasn’t.
In my experience, when someone puts “basically” in a description like that after claiming previously that they were yelling, no “basically” about it, that’s the tip-off that the story you’re getting is an exaggeration at the very least.

He was yelling & cussing (aggressor) – I told him to stop.
He was yelling (aggressor) – I stood up (aggressor) & repeated my demand that he stop.
He was basically yelling – so I chokeslammed him (aggressor to the Nth degree).

The description of Wade’s behavior gets progressively less severe the closer you get to Chacon assaulting him. Signals guilt. The farther away from the chokeslam, the greater the emphasis on Wade’s behavior – he’s trying to justify it.

Ed Wade is a bad gm

This probably was coming to him.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

He's a horrible GM

But that has little to do with whether or not he deserved to be body-slammed. I know lots of good people who are bad at their jobs, and vice versa.

I was thinking last

night that we should sign Ted Lilly to play SS. He was batting something like .220 and had two more hits last night.

he did help bail them out in '05

So there’s that. Also, the Yankees have been quite a second (and third (and fourth (and fifth))) chance organization over the years. Ponson (twice!), Steve Howe, Gooden, Straw…
