Wieters promoted to AA
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-wieters626,0,3243552.story
CHICAGO - The Orioles are expected to announce today that catcher Matt Wieters, the organization's first-round draft pick last season and its top prospect, will be promoted to Double-A Bowie.
Wieters hit .342 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs in 68 games at Single-A Frederick to earn the promotion. He had a .445 on-base percentage and .560 slugging percentage, earning a berth in the midseason All-Star game.
Wieters, who turned 22 last week, was the fifth overall selection out of Georgia Teach in the 2007 first-year player draft.

Does that mean he’ll participate in the All-Star festivities in Single-A?

Already happened.
Wieters went 1-2 with an RBI single in the Carolina-California All-Star game.
Arrieta pitched a scoreless inning to start the game.

Hells yeah.
F a next stop Norfolk. Guys jump from AA to MLB all the time. Markakis never played a second of AAA ball.

AAA is where you go
when the club figured out you won’t be an impact MLB player. Or you’re a pitcher who needs more innings against slightly better competition.
But a non-pitcher going from AA to MLB isn’t even uncommon anymore.

While alot of players have made the jump from AA to MLB, its hardly the norm. Jay Bruce, Evan Longoria, Ryan Braun, and many other great young players have spent a little bit of time at AAA. Its not a stop for bench players.
In fact I think the best route for Wieters is to spend the rest of this season at Bowie. Then start next season in AAA. We’re rebuilding and don’t really need him on the major league roster. Might as well keep him in Norfolk long enough that we get an extra year out of him. Its not like its going to hurt his development or anything.

I'm glad
That they stuck to the timetable that they decided on before the season and didn’t just promote him because he instantly mashed. I’m also really excited about how he will do in AA.

Good deal.
It might be time to take a trip to Harrisburg for a Bowie game, then.

During today's game
Amber said that Wieters has not been promoted yet. MacPhail said it’s apparently something they’re looking at doing.
I understand not wanting to rush a guy, but c’mon… this is way overdue.
He’s a man among boys in single-A.

He's being promoted tomorrow
Bowie was finishing up a road trip in Ohio today, and it didn’t make sense to fly him there for one game.
So he had one last game in Frederick tonight….and homered, doubled, and walked, of course.

ehhhh
His racism is marginally overstated. He was born in 1886 in rural Georgia. He didn’t come up with racism out of the thin air. It was taught to him. Him and a good amount of the rest of Major League Baseball at the time, which did not allow black people to play.

Agreed
How many people even realize that the revered Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was himself responsible for keeping the color line intact as long as he was commissioner?
Sure, Ty Cobb beat up blacks on a hair-trigger, but I don’t know that it was because of their color. He beat up lots of people, including a crippled man that was taunting him during a game.

an ignorant jerk...
but also a wealthy one, due to some crafty investments (ground floor investor in coca cola). one of the major georgia-based health systems bears his name on account of his funding and he also endowed a pretty significant scholarship.

I'm definitely gonna have to go see him
Last time I went to see Bowie (not something I do very often), I was blown away with Chris Tillman, SP. I have a scorecard of the game, but not on me…no ER, no BB, and 2 or less hits….
Wieters seems to be as good as advertised…it’ll be easy as hell to get an autogragh too…

I'm wondering about David Hernadez
The guy has pitched two games in a row of no-hit or near no-hit ball, isn’t getting any run support, and stands in Double-A. He and Bergesen are doing better then Tillman, sub-3.00 ERAs, and haven’t gotten the nod to Triple-A yet. I understand that they need to develop but a 40:96 walk to strikeout ratio’s pretty all right.
Do they wait until his walk rate goes down further before promoting him? Let him start a few more games? Wait until Arietta or someone else from Single-A’s ready or simply wait until next year?

Eastern League
They have a later all star break than the Carolina league (July 16th), so the Orioles would probably move people up to Norfolk around then.
Reimold, Hernandez, Bergesen, and Tillman are all candidates for promotion.

promotions
I feel Reimold should just get called up to Baltimore. He’s getting old, and I feel he could make the jump. I think Payton will eventually get traded and when he does Reimold will take his spot.
Hernandez I think should get called up to AAA. He’s been outstanding this year. We may need him in Baltimore so it’d be nice for him to get some AAA experience. Bergesen has also been great, but really isn’t striking many people out. I’d rather see him in Bowie until he can improve that.
Tillman is the best of the bunch, but should really stay put. He hasn’t pitched more than 6 innings in any games so far. I’d like to see him get a few 7 or 8 inning games by the end of the season. Plus he just turned 20 years old, he’s the youngest guy in the EL. No need to rush him. Let him get a full year of AA and AAA. He can join the rotation in 2010 at 22 years old (maybe a September call up next season).

i agree 100%. if huff and/or millar go, i’d guess that good, bad or indifferent, it’ll spell promotion for moore and costanzo.

The only reason I am happy Payton is playing well
besides the obvious (we win games!) is that someone, anyone, will actually give us more than a few maple bats for him
