Shouting "O" at the Nats stadium?
So I'll probably be at Saturday and/or Sunday's O's-Nats games at the new Nationals stadium. And I'm already wondering -- is it OK to shout "O!" during the national anthem? I have several disconnected thoughts about this:
- Shouting "O!" should be OK since I will be decked out in O's gear and this is a form of supporting my team.
- Shouting "O!" is discourteous, similar to the Boston/NY fans getting up chants for their teams and generally being asswipes at OPACY.
- Shouting "O!" at Nats games is normally ignorant since it's an Orioles thing, but is OK since the Orioles are actually there.
What do you think?

I never shout "O" during the national anthem anywhere
Since I don’t stand for it.

OK
I want to clarify this in advance: I’m not looking to start an off-topic argument. I’m asking this in a friendly, curious manner.
Are you a citizen of a different country? Or is your choice not to stand during the anthem based on some kind of political disagreement with one or more actions of our government?

it's the latter.

actually, no
it seems vaguely militaristic and propagandist.
BUT this is an Orioles blog, not a politics blog, so I won’t discuss this anymore. In case you think I hate America, I don’t, but like I said, this portion of the conversation is over.

"Vaguely" militaristic?!?
It’s completely militaristic. You pledge allegiance to the FLAG. Not the constitution which governs us all & provides the rights we all enjoy & attempt to force upon the globe. The flag. Plus they added “under God” into it – the whole thing is amazingly non-American.

Feel free to ignore that post.
My tone is way too harsh for my actual feelings – I’m more in bewildered amazement that it’s something we do than I am flag-burning angry man muttering to himself in the street.

Think the National Anthem's bad
Check out Maryland’s state song:
Maryland, My Maryland
(sung to the tune of “O, Christmas Tree”. I kid you not)
Written by James Ryder Randall
The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
Maryland, My Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland, My Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!
OK, we’ll skip verses 2-8…
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland, My Maryland!
The Old Line’s bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland, My Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she’ll come! she’ll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

Shouting O is fine
But if this had been a thread about starting chants, I would have voted “Don’t be that guy.” As Orioles fans we know well that it is not funny or respectable when opposing fans come into your house and shout “Let’s go Sox!!!!!” it is just annoying, embarrassing and disrespectful.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Maybe I’ve been influenced by the years of NY and Sox fans coming to Baltimore, but I’ve always been of the mind that one of the best parts of going to see your team play out of town is to be loud, supportive, and a bit annoying. Don’t be rude to the home team, just enthusiastically cheer for yours. Really, really loudly.
by therobotian on Jun 27, 2008 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree there
At least I think I do. I think that it is fine to stand up and cheer when your team drives in a run at the other ballparks, but starting chants is a different story. When the Sox fans especially come to Baltimore and shout Youuuu and the likes it really pisses me off. I do not feel any admiration towards them as they stick by their team and travel with them, I do not think it is funny, and I think it is just a part of the arrogant Boston mentality. In the other thread we were discussing the fact that certain hats represent certain types of fans; I think that when you start cheering for your team in an opposing teams ballpark it becomes a “war” between the fans as each side tries to be louder and it becomes flat out stupid, thus detracting from the game.

See, that's where I disagree
I don’t think the battle between the fans is something that detracts from the game. It’s like the “12th man” in soccer… the enthusiasm and energy of the fans helps the team. I don’t advocate actually fighting in the stands or anythings, but one of the things I most enjoy about European style sporting events is the enthusiasm the fans bring with them to the stadium. I wish Orioles fans (and I am equally guilty of this) were louder and more boisterous at the games, including chants, cheering, singing, heckling, the works. So long as it stays in good fun and doesn’t become aggressive or mean spirited, I think it improves the sport.

Yes, they really are
I was pretty appalled when I looked into getting tickets for tomorrow and Sunday’s games. Maybe they shouldn’t wonder why their brand-new stadium is so embarassingly empty for non-prime games.

Prime games being EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT
Fuck the Nats. I went to a game two weeks ago and was bored out of my mind. Luckily those tickets were free.

I voted Don't be that guy
But actually, the more that I think about it, it seems like it might be ok. I started to say that if you don’t like hearing “Let’s Go Red Sox clap clap clap clap clap” or assholes doing the asshole Yankee roll call from the bleachers, then it’s hypocritical to shout O. But really, the comparison to those would be chanting Let’s Go O’s or spelling to O-R-I-O-L-E-S. I think doing either of those things would be inappropriate. One brief O letting your team know you’re there seems to be ok.
I know I heard O both in Milwaukee and Chicago in the past week, and it made me smile, though I didn’t shout it myself. Although I don’t ever shout it, just because I like to hear it, and if I’m shouting I only hear myself.

honestly...
maybe i’m just too attuned to soccer, but it ought to be a point of pride if you, as a fan, can go into another team’s house and outcheer the home crowd. seriously…you don’t like hearing yooooooooooouuuuk? then you gotta crank up the luuuuuuuuuukkke. therefore, i have no compunction about unleashing the “o” in the national anthem.

yeah
It ANNOYS me that I hear the Red Sox and Yankees cheered so hard at Camden Yards. But it’s not them doing it that annoys me. It’s them having shit to cheer for and being so routinely able to drown out the O’s fans. Man up, y’all!

if you're wearing orange at an MFY game at the Yard...
You can’t say “Yankees Suck” without an usher being on your ass.
However, if you’re wearing pinstripes, feel free to be a vulgar asshole all night long.

I mostly only get to see the O’s live when they get to the west coast stadiums- Oakland mostly and Seattle or LA once in a while. Every game I go to has a good sized crowd of ex-pat O’s fans who deliver the O during the anthem. It is usually loud enough to hear around the stadium.
I deliver the O during the anthem and I make noise for the team for the entire game. I’m not obnoxious about it but I’m not going to sit quitely just because I’m in another stadium.
Writing is God's way of showing you how sloppy your thinking is.

Wait a second?
“O” is for the Orioles? I thought I was supposed to yell it any time the anthem is played. Graduations. Orioles games,, Revolution games, Hershey Bears games, Church, etc.
