Phat Albers out for two months to a year
MRI exam shows right-hander is suffering from torn right labrum
WASHINGTON -- One day after putting reliever Matt Albers on the 15-day disabled list, the Orioles got word Friday that the right-hander will not be ready in 15 days. An MRI on Albers' injured right shoulder showed that the reliever was suffering from a tear in his labrum.
Dave Trembley expands:
"He could rehab it, but if he rehabbed it, it would probably be almost a two-month period before he could pitch again," Trembley said. "Or he could go the route of surgery. He wants to discuss that with some people and consider what he's going to do. Obviously, that's a real big blow for our club. He did such a great job for us."
Albers status not encouraging to O's
This is definitely NOT GOOD NEWS at all. Albers has been eating up innings all year, and although he makes me nervous at times, I would always much rather have him come in the game than almost anyone else, including ChadBrad, Walker, and even Sarfate.
There's a hole in our bullpen now. I haven't looked at the AAA roster, so I have no idea who we're gonna call up.
FanPosts do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Camden Chat or SB Nation. They might, though.

It's a huge hole in our bullpen
The guy served as an effective spot starter, and you’d have no reservations putting him in to long relief.
There’s no one in our bullpen I’d feel comfortable giving that task to. I don’t want to sound doom-and-gloom, but I have a feeling we’re going to find out how important he was to our team in the next month or so.
Off the subject, I REALLY hope we don’t get Felipe Lopez.

Albers should get the surgery
Rehabbing dont often help torn labrums, best route is surgery out a yr or a little more
I dont read good things about Felipe Lopez either.

When is Loewen due back?
Not that I think he’s going to be half as god as Albers, but he could take spot starts if he’s going to be working out of the bullpen in an effort to find control.

Loewen's due back by teh end of next week.
And he’s bullpen-only, whether he likes it or not. Thus Spake Trembley.

We still saved $$$
$24 million that hopefully will be turned into extra draft picks that we sign, and Tejada wasn’t going to perform for us anyways.

Scott, Sarfate, and Tillman
is still a pretty good haul, and at least there was some use out of Albers for a while, hopefully he’ll be able to come back from this.

Tillman was in the Bedard trade, right?
Costanzo was piece #5 from Houston.

To be know hence
as the Labrum Bear Trade.
So we got:
- Two pitchers with serious, career-threatening injuries, manifesting themselves less than six months after the trade.
- Luke Scott – .278/.357.520, 13 HR, 30 years old, plays for peanuts and crackerjack.
- A buckwild reliever by the name Dennis Sarfate – 2.80 ERA, 34.2 IP, 36 K, 30 BB, 23 H, 1.52 WHIP.
- Mike Costanzo – currently .245/.320/.375 at AAA Norfolk.
- Rid of an obligation for a shitload of money owed to Tejada.
They got:
- Miguel Tejada – .288/.326/.450, 10 HR, Turns out to be 34 not 32 years old and is owed a fortune.
The trade’s definitely still a win for us – but as you say, certainly not a steal anymore. Scott’s offensive production, age, and cheap contract make him more valuable to us than expensive, older, whiny, truth-challenged Miguel Tejada. And who knows, maybe Sarfate will get some control, or Patton or Albers will recover and be legit Big League pitchers. We have possibilities, on the cheap. They have an old expensive player with numbers that have continued to decline a bit.

I had no idea
LUUUUUUUUKE’s numbers were so close to Miggi’s right now. And he’s 2 years younger. Sure, OF power is supposed to be easier to find than SS power (as we are being made well aware on a daily basis), but still, Sarfate has a future in the ‘pen, and if either Albers or Patton can rehab and contribute, we still win. The collective contracts of those 5 would pay for a couple of months of Miggi.

It may be harder to find a good hitting SS but
Luke kept us from sending Jay Payton out there everyday, not as painful as SS right now for us but still not good at all. In my opinion this trade was at worst a wash for us (unless something major changes).

Funny
What’s interesting is that I haven’t heard much of a stink in the legal arena over Tejada. The guy lied about his age. So shouldn’t the ‘stros think about suing him for some kind of fraudulent misrepresentation? His value is severely set back since he’s effectively lost two years of playing capacity.

i’m also surprised he hasn’t gotten some sort of shit from ICE. i mean, isn’t the implication that he lied on his application for a work visa? feds don’t generally take kindly to folks lying on applications.

This is a sports star we’re talking about! Not a nuclear physicist from India! What Tejada does MATTERS. When the good Ph.D. says he’s from New Delhi and it turns out he’s really from Bangalore, lock him up! What’s a couple years among pro athletes and customs enforcement?

he lied on his visa stuff. Just to his employer. And do you know how hard it is to void an MLB player contract? The O’s are still fighting with Fat Sid over voiding his. This isn’t the NFL where you can cut a guy for looking at the GM cross-eyed.

Shoulder injuries are death for pitchers
Think of all the pitchers who come back from TJ surgery – it’s like NFL players getting an ACL surgery. What used to be a career ender is now almost a rite of passge. Jamal Lewis has had two done, and done quite well in the NFL.
Shoulder issues? Name a pitcher who’s come back from severe shoulder issues. It’s not a long list. TJ surgery is now treated as an annoyance by GMs – lose a year, but he’s gonna come back. Shoulders? Might never contribute on the ML level again. Joel Zumaya is the only one that jumps to mind recently. I might be wrong – there may be more – but the list of successfull pitchers after shoulder surgery I would bet is a lot shorter that the success after TJ surgery list.
Don’t count on Patton or Albers pitching for the big team again.

I respectfully disagree...
I’ve been pitching in co-ed, slow-pitch softball for 3 years now with a jacked up shoulder. I’ve got a pretty good knuckler, average two strikeouts an outing with a pretty healthy 13.50 ERA and a mean underhanded throw from the mound to first should the need arrive.

Softball motion
puts MUCH less stress on the shoulder. It’s why HS baseball pitchers have a pitch limit and a softball pitcher can throw 3 games on 3 straight days.

It's MUCH more of a pitching game
with fastpitch softball. I can see where even a baseball fan would find fastpitch boring. Saw my HS have a game where it was 1-1 going into the 7th, our pitcher had 13 K’s and their pitcher had 15. If you’ve got a hot pitcher, there’s not much the average batter can do in fastpitch. I mean, the mound is 40 feet away in HS, and by the time you release the ball, you’re 33-35 feet away. And the ball’s going as fast as 50-60 in HS, and up to 70 in college. You get about as much reaction time as you do on a Joel Zumaya 103 mph special in MLB at that distance.

No doubt
I played in a couple men’s leagues that damn near came to blows after every pitch…not fun. I’m in a co-ed league with a bunch of news people. One of our guys is the helicopter pilot…he got called out to cover a house fire before one game and it turned out to be nothing. He swung by the field with a photog and hovered for an inning just past the OF with the photog filming the game giving his own commentary. I think we gave up 12 runs that inning so it made for some pretty funny video.

this could be the end for Albers
We had the same discussion with Patton. Guys rebound from Tommy John surgery. No one had any encouraging words about rebounding from a torn labrum. I don’t have much faith in Loewen, and he certainly won’t be an inning eater. The BP has been key to this surprising run the O’s have made. Now it’s turning into a question mark with guys who are getting tired and now injured.
