Jeremy Guthrie pitches on a Sunday, so the O's are already down 0 to -3. Hopefully, someone's let the air out of Jim Hunter's tires so he can't get to Nationals Park today. Or, maybe, since it's a split MASN crew, the O's will score in the innings Jim isn't calling the action.

Jason Bergmann is another member of the Nationals "What Do I Have To Do To Get A Win Around Here?" Club. Sure, his numbers aren't great, but they should be worth more than 1 win in 6 starts.  Hopefully, his bad luck continues, and he'll have 1 win in 7 starts at the conclusion of the game.

Washington is suffering from some injuries again. Lastings Milledge went on the 15-day DL during last night's game, and his replacement, Roger Bernadina, will get his 1st ML at-bat in the bottom of the first inning today. Go after him, Guts. Paul LoDuca and Da Meat Hook get the day off for Washington, as does Everybody's Favorite Oriole (c)  Melvin Mora, catcher Ramon Hernandez (day game after night game, you know) and Jay "Don't TOUCH My Cap" Payton.

Today's Conversion Day at the Concrete Palace, where fans can turn in stuff from other teams and get a Nationals hat worth probably about $3. Enjoy that if you go. But if you're reading this, you're probably not. And that's OK.

Let's Go O's.

conversion day huh?

hope all the ex-o’s fans enjoy their new POS edition gnats hats. i’d imagine there’ll be a huge pile of old (but ever so slightly worn) birds caps when all is said and done.

how do you not feel like a complete turncoat dick

forking over your well worn O’s hat during a season of Oriole-Magic-resurgence for a cheap-ass W hat during a season of “hell, let’s try LoDuca in left field”?

And what happened to not trespassing in your opponent’s territory? They’ve been advertising this schwag swap in the Sun for weeks.

You stay classy, Washington Expos.

I've just stopped watching.

When I saw SI had the Yankees at #8 in this week’s Power Rankings and the O’s at #15, and the MFY were ONE GAME ahead of the O’s, I just gave up on national TV coverage. They have such a vested interest in the MFY and PHN doing well, they will make it seem like they are good even when they’re not.

And aren’t the MFY due for a good ol’ fashioned 8-game losing streak soon?

And yeah, I e-mailed the SI.com dude reminding him the O’s were only ONE GAME behind the Yankees. No reply. What a shock.

Here's what I don't get

AT MOST, Boston has 5 million people, and that’s being generous. The US total population is 300 million. So, to draw fans of a metro area that include less than 2% of the U.S. population, you’re willing to alienate a good portion of the remaining 98%.

This makes sense how?

It’s why I stopped reading Bill Simmons – he went into All Boston, All the Time mode about a year ago, and I just don’t care. When I read a national site, I want to read about all teams and players of interest – not just NY and BOS. I mean, LA has more people. Philly has more people. HOUSTON, for crying out loud, has more people. I can’t imagine being a Rockets fan or a Dodgers fan or a Eagles fan and the only time you get pub is when your start player(s) go down, because we have to save time for that tragically important Yankees 7-2 win over Kansas City.

it DOES suck

One could argue that the Red Sox represent all of New England as a fan base, but I’m not going to waste my time being picky over the amount of Sox fans in Rhode Island.

Being a Dodgers (and Orioles) fan, I’ve completely given up on national baseball coverage. I feel like I see more Sox caps in LA now than Dodger caps, which is a result of the coverage. Then again, that is in the staunchy white areas. The Latinos are the best Dodgers fans.

The LA Dodgers fan base is huge! All I ever hear about is how Fenway sells out every game. No shit it does! Look at how tiny that park is! The average Dodgers attendance is larger, but the stadium is much larger, and therefore doesn’t get as much attention. What a load of BS.

I could rant all day. Dont even get me started with this LA Angels BS. If you live in LA, reply to this and we can joke about Mike Scocia’s “Howard’s Big Screen TV Superstore Commercials.”

Dude, I would never seriously wear any hat that is given to me by a baseball stadium. The O’s hat I got on Cap Night is from DAP, and it’s basically the worst hat ever.

How would you like to be a Rays fan? They’re actually within .5 game of the PHN, and everyone treats the MFY like they’re knocking down the door for first place. There’s a team in between people should be paying attention to.

with the exception of the Blow Jays, every team in the AL East is at least 2 games north of .500 yet SI and ESPN et.al treat the AL East as a 2-team race. Maybe someone at either organization will actually learn how to read the standings agate in the next 3 months.

Cintron batting 2nd again?

What is this madness? I know that with Mora out of the lineup Diamond Dave gets a little confused, but why not just bump everyone up a peg and put Cintron down at 7th or 8th? Despite the O’s handling the Cubs quite easily on Thursday, Alex Cintron was a giant black hole in the middle of the awesomeness.

Considering that the Nationals haven’t won a series at home since May, George Sherill is a top 5 closer in the league, Belliard is a horrendous hitter, the Nationals are a AAAA team, and it was essentially a home game for the O’s; I found it surprising.

yeah?

It’s not that he’s bad, but he’s not a top five closer. Maybe in fantasy baseball. He’s the fourth-best closer in his division. I’m not crapping on Georgie, just saying there are at least seven better closers only in the American League right now. Guys I’d rather have in for the ninth inning.

Frankly I think Jim Johnson could do that job just as well as Sherrill has, not that I’m suggesting they switch them. Sherrill’s done a fine job this year.

well Johnson started in the minors

But I think his stuff might be better suited for the role he’s in now. Who knows, though? Maybe he turns into a solid, unspectacular starter that lets the defense work for him and does his job. It’s worth trying, though. Absolutely. Even six innings a night is a lot more valuable than one.

I'll agree with you

I am not sure I would definitively put Sherrill in the top five, but he is in the mix of best closers in the league. Rivera, Papelbon, Krod, Nathan, and Percival are head and shoulders better than Sherrill, but I am not completely sold on Soria and Jenks being flat out better. This is just me but I still think that Soria is going through the period in which hitters have not seen all that he has and by this time (a year and a half into his career) the hitters should be making full adjustments to what he has if they ever do. I still think he is vastly underrated as he plays for Kansas City, but he reminds me of Chris Ray to be honest. Jenks has been good for a while but this year I think he is somewhat walking the line. He has turned into a pitcher that likes to put the ball in play more and has a higher WHIP than Sherrill does if I recall correctly. George doesn’t have a good K/BB ratio, but his ERA is inflated as he has been in a few games where he gave up a ton of runs in non close situations and it is tough for a closer to bring down his ERA effectively.

That said I revoke my statement of him being a top five pitcher but still throw him in the mix for top 6. You gotta remember that although Sherrill has had more opportunities than the other guys, he is still converting nearly all of them. In addition, these saves that he is getting aren’t three run saves to pad the stats, but one runs games where the pressure is on.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

what

Why would you not be sold on Jenks or Soria but be sold on Sherrill who’s had a first half of pretty good closing in his career? Soria dominated in 69 innings last year and is even better this year, and Jenks has been doing a good job since 2005.

That I think Sherrill is incontrovertibly superior than Soria and Jenks but you could make an argument for him being slightly better or on par with them, thus placing him in the top 5-6.

But I still would have liked

4 games over .500 than 2 games over.

But, to a theme I wanted to pursue in a FanPost.

When is this team going to go on a serious streak? I mean, Kevbo can fantasize a 12-2 run, but where’s the 10-1 streak or the 7 game streak? I just wonder if they have a streak like that in them. The MFY have pulled one off. Even Tamps can reel one off. But do the O’s have a 10-2 run in them?

I can very easily see

us losing 3 of 4 to KC. Look at the match ups:

TOMORROW—Royals, 7:05 p.m., MASN

• Starters: Royals’ Zack Greinke (7-4, 3.40) vs. Orioles’ Brian Burres (6-5, 5.29)

Who knows if BB will even pitch, and even if he does, it’s advantage, KC.

TUESDAY—Royals, 7:05 p.m., Ch. 13, MASN

• Starters: Royals’ Luke Hochevar (5-5, 4.60) vs. Orioles’ Radhames Liz (2-0, 5.70)

50/50 here. Let’s say Rad steps up and the O’s win.

WEDNESDAY—Royals, 7:05 p.m., MASN

• Starters: Royals’ Gil Meche (6-8, 4.66) vs. Orioles’ Daniel Cabrera (5-4, 4.53)

Less than 50/50. Meche isn’t the pitcher they thought he was, but Bad Danny’s shown up in 4 of his last 5 starts. Advantage, KC

THURSDAY—Royals, 7:05 p.m., MASN

• Starters: Royals’ Kyle Davies (3-1, 3.34) vs. Orioles’ Garrett Olson (6-3, 4.76)

Advantage, KC. Olson’s been doing it with smokes and mirrors and chewing gum and baling wire all year.

Both offenses can be anemic. I may come down to who can score 2 or more runs. But I can totally see us winning 1 of these 4 games. I’d like to think we can win 3 of the 4. But I don’t really see it happening.

Not being able to win 3 games in a row

Is a HELL of a lot better than not being able to STOP a 3 game losing streak….

This was our 80th game. Our 10-game sets have unraveled as follows:

6-4
5-5
5-5
5-5
4-6
5-5
6-4
5-5

As long as we keep on NOT LOSING, the wins are bound to come….

I don't think they'd lose 10 of 12 either

But that doesn’t change the fact that I think it is more likely that would happen than they win 10 or 12. Going on a streak like that requires hitting to pick up the team when the pitching isn’t doing it. With the division that the O’s are in and the state of the hitting all year and pitching as of late, I just cant see it.

A-Rod and Damon are above .300. No one else (not on the DL) on the team is over .290. Their pitching isn’t much better than ours right now, if not worse. How did they put 7 games in a row together, and why can’t we?

Here is the Yankees most commonly used lineup this year with OPS+
Damon 128
Jeter 98
Abreu 118
Rodriguez 164
Matsui 132
Giambi 150
Cano 72
Molina 53
Cabrera 79

Here is the Orioles:
Roberts 126
Mora 84
Markakis 132
Huff 124
Millar 96
Scott 135
R. Hernandez 77
Jones 86
Bynum 30

That’s not even looking at pitching.

Of the ones left, the Yanks has 4 with an OPS+ of over 100, the O’s have 4.
