Boston/Tampa Bay Brawl

Ept_sports_mlb_experts-376725004-1212706906_medium

I might be breaking the rules of Camden Chat by going outside of Baltimore for the topic, but we are talking AL East here, so I'm taking my chances.

If you didn't hear about (or didn't see) the brawl last night in the second inning, here's the awesome video . This beats ESPN highlights, as it is 3:42 of absolute chaos. Two nights ago, Coco Crisp slid into second in what was considered by TB to be an attempt to cut Rays 2B Akinori Iwamura in two. This after Boston was already well into their lead.

On Crisp's first at-bat last night, Rays P James Shields went inside and caught Crisp on the hip with a pitch. Coco being cuckoo dropped his bat, tossed his helmet, and charged the mound. Crisp, in a move worthy of a featherweight title fight (he's a little guy), dodged Shields' first punch. The retaliatory punch looks to have caught Shields on the back.

The benches cleared, Iwamura got a couple punches in, Carl Crawford and Julio Lugo got in late and looking stupid, and Francona got to pat his squirrelly little thug on the back all the way to the dugout. I must say that Tampa Bay is brawling their way into the annals of MLB history, following up on a Yankees brawl (again starting with Iwamura) early in spring training.

And, on top of it all, apparently Manny and Youkilis went at it, with each other, in the dugout in the fourth! No fisticuffs, just words, but reports state that Manny "pointed at Youkilis before being escorted down the runway toward the clubhouse[.]"  My analysis is that Manny was calling his shot.

Now all we have to do, Baltimore, is wait until these teams kill each other, then we win our division by default, right?

Coco is stupid

but Joe Maddon and James Shields are really stupid. They lose Shields for the game and we lose Coco Crisp? Thx dude.

Boston/Boston Brawl

No dirt on Ramírez-Youkilis dust-up

Melmo and Payton shoving last year, and tempers flaring on a crappy team doesn’t surprise me. I wonder what’s going on here.

I don't recall seeing Manny mix it up in the brawl.

So, my guess is Youk was a little pissed that Manny didn’t get in there and “protect” his boys.

But on another note… I was up around 1:30 last night (the 2 month old decided he was hungry) and guess what BBTN led off with? Understandably, the basebrawl. They spent 8 minutes on it… again, understandable-a bit much in my opinion but understandable. Following the brawl lowlights, they fed right into-one guess, anyone? anyone? Bueller? That’s right MFY and the most storied comeback win against some other team. Of course they didn’t show one hightlight about how The Other Team scored their 8 runs. Just how the MFY managed to battle all the way back from a 7-2 deficit. Damn… that sure is storied! Next, and this is when I decided to turn it off because I reached my Northeastern America limit, was the NY Mets and how they managed to lose in a walk-off HBP manner. Fuck you ESPN. Fuck you.

Fuckin' Matrix-move by Coco

I really wish the Rays woulda retaliated by, oh I dunno…. winning at least one fucking game in the series. Oh well!

by PhilR8 on Jun 6, 2008 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

Matrix move

I like that analogy! Though I wouldn’t compare James Shields to Agent Smith. More like one of those suckers that dies inside the matrix real early in the movie.

As for Manny and Youk, I think you might be onto something, dayzd. But Manny’s gotta protect his hair. Youk wouldn’t understand that.

Manny and Cuckoo Crisp both look like they are wearing rubbers on their head with those stupid skully caps.

Best take on the "fight" I've seen:

http://thesportshernia.typepad.com/blog/2008/06/james-shields-h.html

By the way, Coco must not be very popular in the dugout How does Carl Crawford get there from left field without anyone really helping Crisp out?

Already posted this

but I love how Iwamura runs in and sucker punches him in the kidney. Jonny Gomes was trying to drop the hammer on fuckhead Crisp. If only Shields would have connected.

Coco still got killed.

It was kind of amusing, to tell you the truth. His slide WAS dirty against Iwamura, and he never should’ve charged the mound. Then he ended up get beat on by Navarro holding hin down while Gomes, Aki, and Crawford moved in. Ouch. Friends don’t let friends the size of Crisp charge the mound.

As to the Manny-Youkilis thing…I’m pretty sure it has to do with Youkilis being a complete asshole.

I mentioned this before..

but before the season began I picked the Rays for 2nd place in the east this year in a bet!

Shoulda done a Vegas bet.

Ignored in all this...

is the fact that Jason Bartlett started it. The Rays did a nice job of sweeping this under the rug and spinning it so they look like innocent victims, but they aren’t. That doesn’t matter though, people just want to pile on the Red Sox, so this inconvenient truth goes ignored….Gomes, Iwamura, and Crawford are some punk bitches coming in and taking late shots at a dude who was pinned down….whatever, just another stupid girly baseball fight

by oriolez on Jun 6, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Oh yeah....

nice Matrix move by Coco to dodge that first punch though

by oriolez on Jun 6, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know the context.

How did this whole thing really get started? I was under the impression Crisp started it with the hard slide for no reason on a steal.

by dayzd toe on Jun 6, 2008 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Bartlett

blocked 2B on a steal attempt, and Crisp slid headfirst and hurt his widdle fingers on Bartlett’s knee. So then came the takeout slide, then he and Maddon jawed at each other when Joe came out to make a pitching change. So the next night TB threw at Crisp.

by Brotz13 on Jun 6, 2008 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh.

Well I don’t see how that’s bartletts fault at all. That’s the second baseman’s right to block the bag in that situation. It’s a legal move, right? So what the hell’s is Crisp’s god damn deal? Pansy.

Barlett

Echoing chatter reported by Buster Olney, I doni’t think it’s fair to blame Barlett. His put his knee down, which Coco thought was a dirty play, but how did Barlett know he was going to slide first.

Wolf, wolf, wolf.

by birdman on Jun 6, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Here are all the plays

http://ballhype.com/video/red_sox_rays_brawl/

You can’t see Bartlett’s face, but he had to be taking the throw, and not looking at Crisp, while that knee was down. Seems to me his leg was as fair a target as Crisp’s hand. Not sure how you see a bunch of malice there, other than you are sensitive to people “wanting to pile on the Red Sox”. Crisp’s slide was clearly intentional. I don’t see a lot of spin going on. Pretty much every account I’ve read talks about the Wed. night slide.

by drj on Jun 6, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

if crisphad slid feet first

and spiked the shit out Bartlett’s shin/calf would we be yelling at Crisp for sliding feet first. I mean, shit happens, and yes we do like to “pile on the Red Sox.” But only when they do stupid shit. It’s like we make things up about them to “pile on.”

Every time there’s a basebrawl, you’re reminded why boxers and mixed martial artists are such unique, special athletes. Except Alan Mills. But especially Julian Tavarez.

And “punches” on Crisp while he was pinned were laughable.

Every time I see a brawl

I see at least 2 guys who, if they had wrestled in HS, could have LAUNCHED guys with a great throw. When a guy rushed you head-on, he SHOULD go flying in the air ass over tea kettle. But that’s just me.

1. This “fight” reconfirms that baseball players aren’t much with their fists
2. The video shows a DRay on top of Crisp punching another DRay in the leg a couple of times. Adjectives fail me here. See point #1 above.
3. What the hell is Bartlet doing in a fistfight anyway? Let’s say the punch in the photo below actually connects. That is his pitching hand, right?

Suspensions - Rays take the brunt of it.

7 games : Coco Crisp, Red Sox
6 games : James Shields, Rays
5 games : Jonny Gomes, Rays; Edwin Jackson, Rays; Jon Lester, Red Sox
4 games; Carl Crawford, Rays
3 games ; Akinori Iwamura, Rays; Sean Casey, Red Sox

Crisp’s suspension begins Friday. He’ll be out for the entire O’s series next week.

Thank God.

Fights are bad for baseball. We must severely punish all those involved.

Steroids aren’t so bad, though.

Seriously...

Baseball fights are simply embarrassing. Didn’t these guys ever have to square off on someone at a school bus stop or in a locker room? Only one who actually looked like he knew what he was doing was Nolan Ryan in his beatdown of Robin Ventura.

Manny vs. Youkilis update

I realize this whole thing is kinda off-topic for CC, but I live in Massachusetts and am bombarded with Sox news all the damn time, so if anyone’s still interested in the mysterious Manny/Youkilis fight….

Apparently, several players have anonymously confirmed to reporters in the past couple days that Manny confronted Youkilis (told him “cut that shit out”) about his constant complaints, throwing bats, helmets, and other shit around the dugout every single time he makes an out….apparently Youkilis said something back to him that caused Manny to get up and slap him across the face, then he shoved him and they had to be separated. At one point, the players even had a team meeting with Youkilis about knocking off the temper tantrums

by oriolez on Jun 7, 2008 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Even though

I believe the former players and Francona who have said that this kind of thing happens a lot in the clubhouse and is not a big deal (because it really is not), I did like hearing the explanation after the zoomtards on the radio got Manny-bashing boners last week.
